Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

Since there is no update available I've got a question for you guys/girls:

Has anyone tried to replace wifi chip on their iPhone 4s/5?

I was wondering if I replace wifi chip will iOS 8 overheated or burn it? Anyone tried this, and if so does it work normally or the problems remain, they come back shortly?

As I was told by several persons: iPhone 4s and iPhone 5 may heat because iOS 8 require a lot of CPU power when running "big" operations so WiFi chip gets fried or simply overheated and then it shuts down. That's why there are so many wifi/bluetooth reports and greyed out problems. Unfortunately since I/We can't unroll to much less demanding firmware like iOS 6 or 7 (that are working quite fine on my other devices) I'm considering to buy a new chip so I need advice from you. "To be or not to be? " I know that 4s is old device for iOS 8 so it struggles hard but I wish I knew that before I updated and f#$ed my phone.

    Any info is welcome.

    Thanks

Anybody tried the new iOS 8.1.3 update that was release just a few mins ago and if it fixes the wifi issue? Ever since I upgraded my iPad to to iOS8, all it does is gather dust. No wifi, even if it connects it does to the 5GHz and only for a minute or so.

I did the update to 8.1.3 and it made no difference on the WiFi issue.  I still loose connection.

New .3 update seems to run normally ONLY IF I turn off Air Drop. With Air Drop on and Angry Birds Star Wars open wifi speed is cut in half???!

ok - let's look at the warranty a bit closer as there seems to be a lot of 'thoughts' being bandied about and little facts to back any of it up.

No warranty is going to allow a 'rollback' of any kind. It's farcical. It's time people move on from that thinking. You have avenues to address any 'faults' such as repair, replace or refund. That's it guys. So all this talk of going back, ain't going to happen. That horse is dead, it's time to put the whip away. Build a bridge and get over it.

Let's focus on what people can do, including fixes and redress (and by all means show what is specific to your country). We've seen all the 'fixes', if that doesn't work for you, what can you do? What does Apple state about warranty? We know Apple hardware has 12 months warranty (or more by default depending on your country), but what about software? Apple here state that for all software, refer to the Software License Agreement.

    EXCLUSIONS AND LIMITATIONS

This Limited Warranty applies only to hardware products manufactured by or for Apple that can be identified by the "Apple" trademark, trade name, or logo affixed to them. The Limited Warranty does not apply to any non-Apple hardware products or any software, even if packaged or sold with Apple hardware. Non-Apple manufacturers, suppliers, or publishers may provide their own warranties. Software distributed by Apple under the Apple brand name (including, but not limited to system software) is not covered under this Limited Warranty. Refer to the Apple Software License Agreement for more information.

Here is the extract from the Software Licence Agreement:

    http://images.apple.com/legal/sla/docs/iOS81.pdf

7.3 TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, THE iOS SOFTWARE AND SERVICES ARE PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE", WITH ALL FAULTS AND WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, AND APPLE AND APPLE'S LICENSORS (COLLECTIVELY REFERRED TO AS "APPLE" FOR THE PURPOSES OF SECTIONS 7 AND 8) HEREBY DISCLAIM ALL WARRANTIES AND CONDITIONS WITH RESPECT TO THE iOS SOFTWARE AND SERVICES, EITHER EXPRESS, IMPLIED OR STATUTORY, INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES AND/OR CONDITIONS OF MERCHANTABILITY, SATISFACTORY QUALITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, ACCURACY, QUIET ENJOYMENT, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT OF THIRD PARTY RIGHTS.

Apple here seems to be completely washing it's hands of any responsibility for it's software. Interesting eh? But how true is it? Remember, some laws, like Australian law, essentially override what a manufacture warranty states. So is this true? Can Apple wash its hands of any responsibility for iOS - like it's telling people?

No. I do not think so. At least where I'm from. And Apple have a habit of misleading people. Perhaps you too?

Apple Australia has been reprimanded by the competition watchdog for misleading customers around their rights to refunds or repairs for products.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) investigated Apple’s behaviour around consumer rights and found it had made a number of false and deceptive representations to some customers about whether they were entitled to a refund, replacement or repair.

It found Apple had told the customers it did not need to provide any recompense, despite such remedies being covered by consumer guarantees in Australian Consumer Law. The products ranged from iPods to iMacs, peripherals, iTunes and App Store software, and non-Apple products such as headphones and printers.

    http://www.crn.com.au/News/367969,apple-agrees-to-two-year-warranties-after-accc -wrist-slap.aspx#ixzz3Q3ioBrhB

    Also, this little extract: http://www.lawhandbook.org.au/handbook/ch12s02s02.php

The meaning of “goods” is defined very broadly in the Act. Importantly, “goods” expressly includes “second-hand goods” and “computer software”. An outline of the guarantees that apply under the ACL are outlined below.

So again - the rule here (and I'm not giving anyone legal advice), is that if you take what Apple tells you to be 'gospel' - you're gonna have a bad time. You have rights, express them. If you're really not happy - get a refund and go to another platform. For me, it's worth making some noise, as I have a lot of investment in Apple hardware and software, but I too have a choice to switch - which we're considering.

So please (insert your name here if relevant), either post some factual information that either helps resolves these issues for users (via fix or redress), or just don't post. Honestly, it's like a kindergarten in here.

Happy to report that since updating that I got my 6 nearly 5 days ago, my wifi has been super. No dropping or being sluggish (except the times our  actual internet is slow which happens a good bit thanks to our internet provider). I just checked for the 8.1.3 on my phone as I was rwading new comments but never had the notification there was one available. Is it even worth doing? I'm REALLY hesitant. And it ticks me of there's no mention of fixing the wifi issues...

Many in the Information Technology field adhere to certain "best practices" - one which loosely goes as follows: It's never a good idea to "early adopt" (immediately install) an update, patch or operating system (OS) release if there's no compelling reason to do so.  Best to wait and see.  If an update, on the other hand, contains a critical "fix" for a problem you're having or, say, a patch for a major security threat or virus is included, make an educated decision and "early adopt" (install).  New bells and whistles (features) should not be a reason to early adopt.  When/where possible include a full backup first into your equation if rolling back is an option or possible.
