Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

okay, okay and I know we digress on this thread but since others have slammed Yosemite reliability here also and because YOU wanted to know, here's what I do:

    1) install Yosemite over Mavericks via the Apple Store.

    2) check for additional updates if any for Mac OS, our Adobe CS6 applications and Microsoft Office

    3) make small talk with the user...

    4) walk away...

    5) send the user a handy new features guide (Optional)

    ... (Shrugged shoulders)...

Thanks. As someone who has previously run support in large corporate entities, such as advertising agencies (tonnes of macs, servers etc), I can attest that the vast majority of users either a) don't realise there's a performance issue, unless it is actually crashing, therefore never report it, or b) don't care enough to report to I.T. You get maybe one or two 'mac freaks' that actually have some skill on the tech side - the rest can't even install an app or know what disk utility is.

You didn't mention if you test the new installs? Do you actively test each new installation to ensure the wifi (and basic network) speeds are in line with the best performance available? Or do you just run the updater and walk away.....? Relying on user feedback, to me, is not really a testament to actual performance. Only actual tests, can confirm performance. Not hearing complaints, does not equal 'great' results.

So, do you have a series of test results you can share? What mac, os version etc? Or to bring back on topic, what iOS 8 versions and device, wifi router etc do you use?

I'm one of the "new router" folks; both spouse and I (iphone 5) had extensive lost connections, restart of wifi just to get a connection. I figured the two year old router had given up the ghost. Realized it was due to update to IOS 8.1.2 (both within a week of each other) after purchasing one of the best rated routers out there. realized every other non-IOS device was working great on wifi. Tried the myriad of suggestions (short of full reset, since too many had already reported no luck with that). Some good news: I had luck/success finally after turning off LTE and Data Roaming in the Cellular Settings (from another, shorter listserve). It seems to be working, even though I've turned LTE back on. Might have been luck (some strange combination that finally kickstarted our wifi connection). Both phones no longer have dropped wifi connection (at Home).

But bad news is that the Siri handsfree Bluetooth issue is  NOT resolved for our household. Look up the multitude of questions on this topic. IOS 8 is a cluster. I'm worn out from the "blame the router/car/owner" responses and total arrogance from Apple. Sorry, but Siri made hands free calls on both the 2013 Honda and 2007 Toyota before the update. It ain't the car, it's the operating system update. Thousands of other car owners experiencing Bluetooth issues; some probably also experiencing wifi issue as well.

FYI: ran OOKLA speed test tonight. 14ms Ping, 38.55 download, 5.53 upload (was in same room with router). Haven't lost a connection since the data roaming update; haven't had to turn wifi on/off either (that would sometimes work for 5-10 minutes).

Good luck folks. Apple isn't going to help you.

Upgraded to 8.1.3, no discernible improvement, still poor wifi connection (no issue prior to IOS 8 BTW).

I think, for obvious reasons, people are noticing more of an issue if their home wifi speed is "marginal" (i.e. circa 12 meg or below).

For the people who think the answer to the IOS8 issues has been to replace their router/fiddling with settings, have they tried this "cure" in their local Starbucks, McDonalds, Cafe Nero, etc?

Just want to know when they are going to address this issue. I've had my 6+

replaced once and still have same issue. Wifi won't stay connected at home but all other apple products do. Come on man this isn't what we want apple

I have had my iPhone 6 replaced twice now, and all replacements have been brand new iPhone 6 devices.  The second one was sent directly to Apple's Engineering team.  All three of the iPhones, that I have used, all have the same problem, including the current one I have (the third one), which was replaced last Thursday.  And even after updating to the newest update (iOS 8.1.3) it appears to have exacerbated the WiFi issue.  Really?!

Ok so I am first time iPhone 6 user (or Apple product user)

And guess what, I hit this wifi bug. (very annoying and causes inconvenience)

First of all this thread is in iPad community but I see many people reporting it for iPhone. I hope I am posting in right place and I also hope apple notices / knows this issue.

My issue is Wifi works for a while and then disconnects. Only workaround is to disable and re-enable wifi.

I also see packet loss (3 to 6%) when I ping the iPhone IP.

So I wonder if it is common problem and should I wait for Apple to fix it?

Or I should go to apple store and ask for replacement?

Also is there any official acknowledgement from Apple regarding this bug? Are they working on it?

    Thanks in advance

If those people that are having this issue on their i-devices, I would like to let you know that Apple reps do read these forums.  But if you feel that your report of this issue is not being hear or you would like to provide you feedback, please use the link below to report this but to them from their own website.

Replacement is worth a try.  The problem doesn't occur with all iDevices.  I'd suspect its some combination of the local conditions the iDevice encounters.

To add salt to the wounds, Apple just auto downloaded 8.1.3 to my iPhone. This happens quite regularly, they download the update automatically without any action from me. They do not install it automatically, just download it, but the update now takes up memory which is not released until I install the update.  A big red circle with the number 1 is now on my Settings app.

I deleted the download from usage but the big annoying red circle with the number 1 is still there even after a reboot. Apple wants me to install it so they can show better stats.

6+ @ Work today on OS 8.1.1. Unknown router types (corporate). This is a guest/only, low bandwidth, high saturation network used by everyone during peak hrs. but there's typically no drops or show stopper lags.

6+ Home this evening on a COMCAST Router (upstairs). Note 5 pings over two min. - no drops

iPhone 5c @ Work today running 8.1.3 on a close proximity, Verizon Hot Spot.  Used it to load 8.1.3 this AM

Preparing this post on a Yosemite MacBook Pro at home - Same COMCAST router - never a problem...  (We have up to 3 devices on the same router typically)
