Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

Check out the solution i posted on another thread

Re: Ipad mini with retina wifi extremely slow/dead after ios 8 update

I have been using my iPad Air and my iPad Mini Retina on iOS 7.1 for long time.  iOS 8 screwed the iPads... when connected to wifi for not more than 5 min... terribly slow... I have reset my devices, rebooted , forgot and re joined the wifi network.. iPhone 5s is good with same network...

Noticed the 2.4Ghz on my Airport Extreme 5th Gen is good compared to my 5Ghz .... They were both stuck on Channel 11 and Channel 153.. After moving the channel to Auto ... This fixed my slow wifi issue... Auto selection got my AEBS on channel 149... rebooted and noted this channel changes to 161... Both these changes did not impact wifi .. and am able to browse stream for 3 hours now...

    Solution that worked for me.

Setup Airport Extreme to "Auto" for both 2.4Ghz and 5GHz........ Stop using strict channels on either...

First of all, I don't understand how changing your DNS on your device fixes the MAC randomisation problem.  Any ideas?

And secondly, if you do it on your home or office network, don't you need to do it on any network you happen to log into?

Like many others having same issue on iPad Air. Will connect for a short while then spinning wheel kicks in and shortly after wifi drops out.

Turning on and off will resolve for 10 or 15 minutes. Then drops out and tries to connect to BT Wifi Hotspot, then tries to reconnect to home router, drops out and tries to reconnect to BT hotspot. And so on.

At other times not even showing home wifi as a possibility to connect to. Then after a couple of attempts home wifi shows up again.

Wife on mini having no issues at all.

Battery life on iPhone 5 also seems down although not consistent

Try turning off the Personal Hotspot.

I had the same issue and then I noticed that somehow my iPhone Personal Hotspot was turned on.  Once I turned it off, the issues on both of my iPads went away.  You might need to reset your iPhone--mine got so bad, I thought that it was gonna be a brick but was able to do a hard-reset on it and everything is fine now.

Same situation on my 5s.  Whilst poking around I went to Privacy / Location Services / System Services & disabled WiFi Networking.  That was about 3 hours ago & I've not seen that stupid spinning wheel yet.  This would be the the longest I've gone without resetting Network Settings since updating.

Guys - try this, it's been about 5 hours for me now & I've still not had a timeout.  That's the only thing I fiddled with.

    Hi, Miss Gem,

This solution seems to help my WiFi issues at the moment, although I don't know how this will effect my iPhone in other ways. Either way, it's good to view websites in Safari without them taking so long to load that my screen dims.

Same situation here. Among the issues I'm having with iOS 8 on my iPhone 5S are network connectivity issues on both WiFi and LTE. I've already reset device settings twice and today reset my network settings for the third time since updating. So far, this patch is working well. Thanks!

This did not work for me, especially since the hotspot was already turned off on the iphone.  I played around with this, what was weird is that even though I had turned the hotspot off my iPad still showed it as an option AND if I selected it, it would turn the hotspot on and connect.  Now that was odd.  Of course then I had to turn it off.

What I had tried next is force setting the DNS on the iPad to 8.8.8.8 (google) and so far it seems to possibly be working.  I will know more after testing.

This still needs to be addressed by Apple.  We all love the fact that Apple products "just work" but this breaks that motto for sure.

me and my gf too have the wifi issue, symptoms are spinning ball until it times out, i gotta refresh whatever im doing several times before it would work.

i rely on wifi heavily as buildings in my country are ultra thick that LTE signals are weak indoors.

at this stage, im considering swapping phones until this is fixed.

were both using Iphone 5s with IOS 8

I don't give a **** about why or the tech formalities .  Leave that to Apple. Its not our problem...is it?

I can only tell you that I was having the same issues as everyone else on this thread and I went to another forum and got the "changing DNS info".  I can only tell you it worked....which is why I am posting it here. IT WORKED and that's all that matters. I am not a tech expert but I'm really good at research and finding solutions to problems and trying different avenues to solve those problems.  My research worked for me.  Try it!  It might work for you and many others.  When I changed my DNS settings...everything started to work fine for me. End of story.  I've been flying high with my Wi-Fi ever since.

rolling back also helped fix this issues. Just google the steps make sure you pick the right file for your device. It's pretty straight forward and the update to iOS 8 still shows avail after it's all said and done.

iI'll just keep iOS 7 What ever until iOS 8.0.1 comes out

Tried turning off locations as someone suggested. Worked for a couple hours, speeds consistently 30+. Back, now, to a dismal 8.5. Apple, with more than 12 pages of the same complaint, it's time for the fix.
