Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

Gee, the earth is not flat?  LOL...  What is true is the 111 pages of posts from users who have issues, by far the most issues of any iOS upgrades.  What is also true is that I spent over 5 hours with a very knowledgeable AppleCare Level 2 Tech and he connected to both my iPad and my iPhone remotely through my PC, verified all settings with the phone and the router and when that did not help he had me go to a neighbor's and also Starbucks to make sure it was not an ISP issue.  He then had my phone replaced for free at the Apple Store (nice of Apple to do so) and lord and behold, no problems with iOS 7 that came with the phone but issue started again within 2 hours of installing 8.1.2.  He then connected to my iPhone again and finally passed the issue upstairs to the engineers who then had Kevin call me to get additional technical info for their review.  The issue is very real indeed for a large number of users, even friends of mine who were not aware of it.

Have you read the Ciabarra article?  Do you understand it?  I can provide link after link but as I have said before, it is pointless as your mind is made up!!!

110 pages?  Wow.  That's amazing.  Apple really should do something about all those defective pages!

How many iPads have been CONFIRMED (not merely "suspected") as having a problem?  How many iPads are in use?

By the way, 110 pages is nowhere near the longest thread for an IOS upgrade but you knew that, didn't you?

I Am really pleased that simplistic fixes have helped some people.  But my experience with reduced range/sensitivity/throughput hasn't been helped by tinkering with things.

    my experience remains

VER 7 - worked well under all circumstances

VER 8 - works very badly

I was a little annoyed they try to tell me to contact my broadband supplier and asked them if theyare responsible for limiting the broadband on my iOS devices.I told him Samsung and my laptop is completely fine only my iOS devices hard affectedthey said they would be in touch they said virgin throttle iOS devices that's why I must have a problem

you're right and I know it upsets you and others (aren't you the guy who was contemplating jumping overboard on a ship somewhere because of my posts?) - anyway here's my agenda again since there seems to be some confusion about that:

    - there is no global iOS 8x wifi issue as some (here) would want you to believe.  I'm typing this on a working iOS 8.1.3 device on wifi.

    - if you are having a problem you can't get past (acknowledgiing there are likely many legit issues) Invoke your warranty if you know it's not your wifi gear-  5 warranty replacements might suggest there might be something else going on other than the phone though ...

    - check your wifi gear and make sure it's within specs with Apple's published guidelines (mentioned here twice or more),  has current firmware and isn't crappy.

    - make sure your carrier isn't throttling your bandwidth.

    - Upgrade your phone The 4s is probably near end of life cycle anyway.  (Please don't respond to tell me you have a 5c, 6 or iPad- I get that)

    - Wait for wifi manufacturers to update their specs for better Apple compatibility

    - jump ship!

Like mmurray47 it is pointless to discuss facts with you - your mind is made up and that is ok with me.  And btw, since you brought up the flat earth society, Pope Paul V, after banning Galileo from the church, stated that “the idea that the Sun is stationary is foolish and absurd in philosophy, and formally heretical”, a belief held by most at the time and likely you and mmurray47 had you lived then.  Have a great day, great month, great year...

Since the vast majority of users have not reported problems, I'll stick with the understanding that your problems, whatever they are, are unrelated to the IOS.

The Apple tech "sent you to a neighbor's house and a Starbucks" to outrule your wifi gear?  What were the results? didnt work immediatel?  Worked briefly then degraded?
