Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

    Hi tkdsouth,

Don't waste your time with Philly_Phan or mmurray47, they believe that the problem is with the users, not iOS 8.  Like Pope Paul V they cling to a rigid belief regardless of the facts offered here or in other reputable sites.  For you (the two above will not accept) here are two links in MacRumors, a well respected site.  There are many more in MacRumors and other sites.  Also Google "WiFried, iOS 8" to read the Ciabarra article, pretty technical but right on.

My phone like yours worked perfectly with iOS 7.  Without making any changes to the router or ISP, when iOS 8 came out the problems started.  My phone has been replaced twice with brand new phones.  It is not Virgin, I have AT&T, my next door neighbor has Comcast, I tested with his router and ISP, same issue.  I also spent about 5 hours with a very knowledgeable AppleCare Level 2 Tech and he could not resolve it.  Apple keeps calling many of us to obtain data so I am hoping that at some point the will issue a fix.  Even MacRumors was holding their breath that 8.1.3 would solve but that was not the case.  The AppleCare Tech told me that the engineers are swamped as they are frantically working on iOS 8.2 for the upcoming iWatch and that is taking priority.  Since Apple's profits are going through the roof their is limited incentive to fix.

You proved my point, in 1616 the vast majority of "users" did not report any problems with the flat earth!

With over a half a million views on just this one Apple thread this wifi issue is likely affecting a vast number of users average users who either aren't aware or don't use wifi enough on their device to bother.

However, enough experts are starting to turn on a company that just a couple of years ago they all loved (including me)!

    this info may help

we have an ipaid air 1, an iPad mini 1, an iPhone 5, an iPhone 6.

WE generally stay connected EXCEPT when i set my phone to start an iCloud backup. The moment it starts my router locks up and all devices lose the wifi. My SSID disappears from the air until i power cycle the router.

ADditionally we we have a laptop, desktop, roku, fire stick.  Nothing has any issues until I start the iCloud backup.

i am hoping this info will help identify the issue.  Would be curious to know if your issues go away if you turn off backup on all iOS devices.

LLove this article basically bemoaning the fact apple keeps pushing major ios uodated every year. I said it before myself, it's not needed. Ios 7 should of got a longer cycle to really mature. They over do it and tinker this causing all this grief. Even if they do get ios 8 right they will prob bodge it again when ios 9 hits. They are doing too much whilst breaking existing functionalities and not bothering to address the bugs. Too busy adding new features, some good but many pointless. I wany functionality above all else. Wifi is one of the core lifebloods of the phone along with calling and music. It should not be ignored at the expense of some garbage new health app

What a great article, thank you so much for the link.  It summarizes very well what a lot of us are experiencing.

Wow.  Over a half-million views.  Apple should do something about all those views!

Perhaps you can explain how your router is capable of identifying the nature of the data that it's transporting.

how the heck should i know. I am telling you what was observed.

I Repeated the test 3 times. As long as I don't attempt an iCloud backup and I leave it disabled all is fine.

The fact is that it does. Which means you are calling me a liar. I didn't know this thread was full of such jerks.

IF I had $2000 to spend on a wifi N capture adapter maybe we could see why. But I dont.

Others might be able to see if backup is causing some of their issues.

NO idea why it happens but it is easy to reproduce and to avoid but very disappointing because now I cannot do a backup Except to my computer.

No, I'm saying that you're mistaken.  Ones and zeroes are ones and zeroes, period.

Your ignorance is destroying this thread.

IT happens. If you were standing here I could make it happen at your request.

NEtwork stacks can crash. Devices can have bugs.

I Just hope others can test to see if there is at all a pattern.  Others have stated their phone crashes their router when they pull in the driveway. I wonder if it is because their phone is attempting to start a backup it waited all day to perform while on wifi.
