Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

Now we are starting to get some where a little constructive. Can anyone else having the problem confirm or deny a link specifically to iCloud backup or other iCloud functions?   As long as I keep it disabled I dont get wifried.  I have not tested with 8.1.3 yet.

this is with my iPhone 6.  As long as I keep iCloud functions off all is well. The moment I enable cloud backup BOOM.

THis could serve as both a temporary fix and a narrowing of the issue.  Maybe the encryption handshake or other aspects of the cloud backup are causing the crash.

I Took a packet sniffing training course where the instructor talked bout finding very early IOS's that streamed random trash packets over wifi For no reason. When it was pointed out to their engineers they were shocked and embarrassed.  Apple makes awesome products but one of their weaknesses seems to be network communications.

Sure.  Google is the final proof.

You must be smelling the same stink I am here.  This guy, like many others, signs on to a board to tell others how his "brand new iPhone 6 plus isn't functioning as designed" but he makes no mention of how long he had it, what remedial steps he's tried, wether he even thought about returning it (or tried), wether he tried utilizing his AppleCare, what kind of router he has, where it's located and that "it's turning into a big pain in the a%#" (turning into...) as though to say he actually has let time go by doing nothing while his brand new iPhone doesnt function.  Who does that?  If the wifi disconnects on lock then would he not be receiving notifications etc. on LTE (or does he not have a signal with that either because he lives in a ravine)?  I guess we'll never know!  These people need to try harder than that with the negative propaganda effort...

If I had a brand new product that was malfunctioning, I would immediately return it to the seller.

Look at the rubbish that philly phan said in response to your post. As you have stated before these guys are idiots. Philly cannot understand what you said. Instead of googling "WiFried iOS 8" and then read the highly technical article by Mario Ciabarra, he refers you to the Flat Earth Society he joined. It is hopeless with these guys, even if they read the article they would not understand it. This is irrelevant to you and me but new visitors looking for answers here are being badly mislead.

Ok so I come up with more weirdness of iPhone 6 (or iOS 8) with respect to WiFi and Data connection logic, especially during sleep / lock mode.

Case 1: Data connection is OFF

    1. Turn on WiFi (internet works as long as you use phone)
    2. Lock phone
    3. Immediately from other phone send e-mail OR whatsapp message to account configured on iPhone
    4. New mail / message notification is received. Display awakens for a few seconds and WiFi icon is also shown in status bar
    5. Now wait 4-5 minutes (phone goes to deep sleep)
    6. From other phone send another e-mail OR whatsapp message to account configured on iPhone
    7. Nothing happens! (i.e. Mail / message notification is not received)
    8. Unlock phone
    9. It shows WiFi icon in status bar but new mail / message is still not received
    10. Disable and re-enable WiFi and new mail / message notification now arrives

Case 2: Data connection in ON

    6. Start packet monitoring on your WiFi gateway (to track if packet is coming via WiFi)
    7. From other phone send another e-mail OR whatsapp message to account configured on iPhone
    8. VOILA - New mail / message notification is received. Display awakens for a few seconds and WiFi icon is also shown in status bar
    9. BUT WAIT!! The packet monitor on gateway did not show packet coming/going from/to WiFi!!
Which means iPhone continuous to show WiFi icon but it has switched to data connection internally (without showing E or 3G or 4G icon)
Which means it FOOLS user in to thinking that its using WiFi connection whereas it is NOT
    10. Now unlock the phone and send one more e-mail / message to account configured on iPhone!
    11. It STILL continues to shows WiFi icon in status bar but message is still not coming via WiFi but data connection (still E or 3G or 4G icon is absent)
    12. Disable WiFi. And E - 3G - 4G icon appears instantly!!!

Clearly this is worst ever logic applied by Apple!

With case 1 - I stop receiving alerts once phone goes to sleep.

With case 2 - After going to sleep it uses my data connection (which costs me a lot) inspite of my WiFi connection (which is free for me) being available - even after phone is unlocked it continues to use data connection instead of switching back to WiFi

Can someone please test the same in their iPhone 6 / iOS 8? So we know for sure that this is either a bug or VERY BAD LOGIC by Apple.

    Thanks in advance

Of all the weirdness, this one is clearly an indication that your iPhone is not functioning properly.  Take it back to wherever you purchased it.  Hopefully, it's not too late to get your money back so that you can purchase another one.  If it is too late for a cash refund, your warranty is still in effect.  Contact Apple for a warranty replacement.

I am still under warranty. So I can get it replaced.

But I strongly feel its not iPhone 6 (hardware) issue but its how iOS (software) works.

So can someone (with packet monitoring knowledge) check and verify.

Please make sure that you wait 5-6 minutes after phone is locked. Test steps 6 and later (case 2) only after that.

    Thank you

"But one of their weaknesses seems to be network communications"...

Hats off on your forensics and observations but (Apple, Samsung, Dell etc.) can't guarantee perfect compatibility with literally hundreds of wifi manufacturer's Products.  The effort is like herding cats!  Why doesn't anyone seem to get that?  This is a point I've been trying to drive home for the longest here...

If that's true, Apple doesn't know about it.  The following is a C&P from the iPhone IOS-8.1 user manual:

When an app needs to use the Internet, iPhone does the following, in order:

    •     Connects over the most recently used available Wi-Fi network
    •     Shows a list of Wi-Fi networks in range, and connects using the one you choose
    •     Connects over the cellular data network, if available

If you do have iPhone 6 can you please check this:

    1. Assuming that your cellular operator allows to check data usage
    2. Start data connection and then start WiFi connection
    3. Check your data connection usage (or MB balance)
    4. Lock the phone. Do NOT do anything for 5-6 minutes
    5. Now unlock the phone and download some 4-5 MB data (do not enble / disable WiFi or data connection)
    6. Disable data connection and check your data connection usage (or MB balance)
    7. Does it show increase in data MB usage (or decrease in MB balance)?

If yes then it definitely means that iPhone 6 does opposite of what it mentions in User guide.

So can you please check. Thank you.

Can't help you there as I don't have an iPhone-6.  However, if I did and if it had the problem that you described, I would have already obtained my refund.

Give it up.  You provided a link to an article that states bluntly that it got all its information from this forum and even provides a link to this very thread.  It's the ultimate in circular logic.
