Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

Don't want to help? I've posted detailed specs, detailed reports of the effects. Detailed what I've done, configuration wise, to try and isolate the problems. Heck, I even left Apple install stuff on my device and did a 24 hour log of events, which successfully replicated most of the issues, along with 2 x calls to AppleCare.

Which part of "some individuals that don't want help" are you confused with? If I help Apple anymore, they'd have to put me on the payroll.

Now, either help, or or jump off to another thread.

Bootsox, I fully agree. More and more articles are being written about the sorry shape of iOS 8. The fact that Apple is calling a lot of us and collecting data from our devices tells me that they are finally aware of the problem. The AppleCare Level 2 Tech I spent hours with certainly was. How soon they will do something about it is another matter. As AppleCare told me their engineers are swamped working on 8.2 for the iWatch so it may be a while. If Steve Jobs was still around this would have been resolved long ago. Profits are now the main driver and Apple makes plenty, but will they continue if they alienate the base?

LOL... someone actually bought an iWatch... SMH...

I must have been one of the lucky ones. I haven't had any wifi issues with my iPad Air 2. I wasn't even aware there were issues. After updating from 8.1.2 to 8.1.3 things changed. Now I drop wifi on both my iPad Air 2 and my iPhone 6 Plus. My roommate received an iPad mini 3 for his birthday today and it keeps dropping wifi. The update to 8.1.3 made it worse on all of my devices. Time to upgrade to Android.

You think that it's wrong to purchase products that satisfy your needs?

HAHA wow. All right, I'll begin with the fact that I'm a girl. So there was your first mistake.

I emphasized brand new because this thread seems to mostly be for Apple users with older devices.

I am volunteering in China for two weeks, so I didn't think it necessary to buy a plan as just about everywhere I go has wifi. I use wifi to stay connected to coworkers, family, and other peers. So, it's pretty important I receive notifications on time, which I do not as my phone disconnects from wifi as soon as my screen locks.

I am running iOS 8.1.3. I've tried restoring network settings, restoring software, and ultimately completely restoring my phone to factory settings. I went to an Apple store here in Shanghai, and turns out that it's not my phone. We realized that it was the wifi to which I connect the most, rather than an issue with my phone. So, my problem has been resolved in that it cannot be resolved because the network at the place I work is faulty.

    Thanks for your reply!

    No its NOT your network.

I am having EXACTLY same issue!!

I dont have data plan either as I am on WiFi network all the time.

I too bought brand new iPhone 6 just 10 days back.

My WiFi also disconnects when phone goes to sleep and then I do not receive any notification till I disable and re-enable WiFi.

I have other phones (Samsung/Sony Xperia etc) in same network and they DO NOT have this issue.

Its not due to Android as well - because issue occurs even if I switch off ALL android phones. And even then iPhone 6 disconnects from WiFi when it goes to sleep.

There is no issue as long as iPhone is ON which means my WiFi settings are CORRECT and nothing wrong.

I honestly do not understand.  Why are you keeping a product that does not perform as advertised?  Why have you chosen not to return it?

Well, I dont have time to go to center (which is many kilometers away). I will go once I am 100% sure its hardware issue.

In our country - refund laws are not strict. So I am not going to get refund anyway.

And if its a software issue (as many seem to have same problem) then there is not point getting replacement as it wont work in that too.

This thread ran smoothly for quite a while. Users posted their issues and reasonable people offered advice until it became pretty clear that the problem was with iOS 8 itself. Then murray and philly jump on board after the ship has sailed, don't bother to read any of the previous posts, don't review any of the data already reported, and proceed to berate users. Apple will eventually offer a fix and after eating crow they will jump into another thread and berate different users. That is the nature of such people, maybe they are trying to make up for their shortcomings. Until then they will offer no help here.

If you purchased directly from Apple, you are entitled to a cash refund within 14 days of purchase.  If you purchased elsewhere, the time-frame depends on the seller.  Most retail outlets in the U.S. allow 30 days.
