Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

If there are any developers facing this same issue, are actively using the latest developer builds and monitoring this forum, can you please check if the latest iOS 8.2 beta 5 DEVELOPER BUILD has addressed the wifi issue? Just curious. Thanks.

Most likely they're spending their time in the Developer's Forums.

Can anyone tell me *** the developers checking the beta versions are actually doing since this wifi issue has gone on since September? And, surely, Apple must be aware that, as I have just read on itworld.com, the problem has been addressed on this forum more than 525000 times, yet no solution is in sight. Furthermore, Apple does not seem to give a flying f... about its customers. I was planning to buy myself an iPhone 6 for xmas but now feel more like returning to Windows, which I left behind after buying my Macbook more than four years ago. As bad and annoying as Windows is I can honestly say that I NEVER had connection issues on any of my pc's.

My iPad 3rd generation is now practically useless ( a doorstop, as I have seen others call it). I have tried all the work-arounds I could find on the net, all in vain. I yesterday tried to downgrade to IOS 7.1.2 using firmware but could not make it work. Does anyone out there have a way to do it?

SSorry but there is only one fix available for the wifi issue and we are not permitted to discuss it here as it is cause for the post to be removed.  Good luck and don't believe everything your made to believe.

An AppleCare Level 2 tech told me that their engineers are frantically working on iOS 8.2 for the iWatch. Like you said they don't appear to give a flying anything about those having Wi-Fi issues. Profits are now the dominant driver. The perfectionism demanded by Jobs appears to have gone by the way side.

i have two Dell laptops in addition to a MacBook Pro Retina, two iPad Airs and two iPhones. No connection problems whatsoever with Windows, problems with iOS devices only and only since iOS 8, not before at all.

Here is a link to a PCWorld article about the the latest upgrades, likely the same material you saw in ITWorld.

As you said if we post the link to the explanation and potential solution the host will remove it.

Same issue here. After updating to 8.1.3 it loses connection to anything wifi after a few minutes. Its not my router/modem or internet connection either, bc evrything else works fine. The only two things that are losing connection are my iphone 6 and my ipad mini2, both of which worked fine before this last crappy and pointless update. Fix this apple, many people are ****** off!!!

    You are right.

But reading your posts PHilly_Phan in this thread is a totally waste of time and no help at all in this problem, do you get it?

CCorrection. The door to the only fix was closed by apple with the introduction of ios 8.1.3. Unless Apple is still signing 8.1.2 you are out of luck..

I hope this is just bad luck i have been asked to restore my ipad air, it automatically installed the latest version of IOS on there.
My phone has been messed up for ages now and although my tablet has the same problems as the phone theye didnt seem quite so bad and of course its wifi only so didnt eat into my data. My phone is constantly eating into my data. I have a apple appointment tomorrow about my phones keyboard freezing in lanscape mode and also to ask about this wifi problem (again). I am now worried they will restore it and introduce IOS 8.1.3 on it and it will be totally lost.

my broadband provider has a shop near our apple store so i quickly went oin and asked them if they throttle apple devices (an excuse given to me by apple before), they said plain and simple NO they dont. they said we use apple devices right here in our show room as you can see.

I am still amazed that media places like 9-5 mac and others (who i have written to about this exact issue and also used this thread as a link to explain in more detail) have not followed up on this. It seems that the general public just assume wifi they are getting is normal or just happen to be light users so they dont even notice the problem. they definetly dont look on this forum or thread or they would add to the numbers im sure.

Just as info.  As I posted earlier I purchased a new AC router which made the lost WiFi issue go from every 3 hours to every 2-3 days.  About two weeks ago I shut off my router for another non related issue.  Since I restarted I have not lost the WiFi signal.  I did notice that my router reset all the ip addresses for all my wireless hardware and those have not changed in the last two weeks.  They have been "locked" at those settings.  So I wonder if it is the ip address changing that is aggravating the issue with iOS8?
