Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

HHi jay, I found the same, that my ipad 4 on ios8.02 seems happier since I turned off the cloud. I don't use iCloud  anyway so it wasn't a problem. I don't use iTunes either. im reluctant to update to the newest iOS incase it gets worse again. at least the iPads working.....atm

Raveiga, you wrote:  "reading your posts PHilly_Phan in this thread is a totally waste of time and no help at all in this problem, do you get it?"

Unfortunately he does not get it. He might have helped on other threads but he is helping no one here, just berating people like he did you while hiding behind a cloak of anonymity. What sort of person gets his kicks that way?

Please just ignore those people and don't reply to anything they have to say. It's just a waste of our time and they will continue to just post more un-needed junk on this forum.  My last post on this subject. Goodbye.

That is what phiily_fan wants us to do, quit posting here so only his views are shown. I think we should ignore his posts as I have for a while but we should continue to state our honest views and not abandon our quest for Apple to address the issue.

Perhaps you miss understood what I'm saying.  Just ignore phiily_fan and don't reply to anything he has to say.  Continue with posting on the iOS 8 problems.  Also I'm just saying "goodbye" to Philly_fan and I will continue posting with the main subject of this forum.

I fully agree with your last one. In your previous post you had said "My last post on this subject. Goodbye." and thus left us with the impression that you would not visit this thread again. Glad to hear that you will continue posting regarding the issue.

Updated to latest iOS in the last couple of days. My iPad 2 as of this morning is a brick. Black screen, all buttons non-functional. Nothing. With the exception of the chime when I pull it into the charger.

I have my iPhone settings to use WiFi only on Hulu Plus and other apps and the phone use to give me a warning that I have lost connection with the internet when I lose connection with WiFi. Now, it does not even give me a warning as quickly as it use to.  It will go for minutes before it tells me there has been an error and my phone has lost connection with WiFi.  I am going through my data, on my data plan, like crazy.  Apple...this has been an on going issue for the past 3 months for me and many, many others.  Apple asked me to send my old , to Cupertino, CA. to them for analysis.  I know it can take time to correct this, but at least make the software to where it alerts me much quicker, than it currently does, so I don't eat through my data!

I have mentioned this before but since it was way back perhaps it is worth mentioning again. I have gotten some improvement by turning Bluetooth and AirDrop OFF on both my iPhone 5 and my iPad Air. With them ON I get very low download speeds, with them OFF I get far better. The reason for this is likely connected to the AWDL conflict explained by the WiFried iOS 8 article I have mentioned before.

If anyone gets improvements by disabling AirDrop and Bluetooth please post here, thanks.

My iPhone 5 won't connect to my home WiFi. It's a Netgear router/DSL modem. Here's my summary of multi-day troubleshooting:

    • phone connects to other Wifi, such as at work just fine
    • other devices all connect fine at home
    • limited to MY phone at HOME ONLY
    • wife's identical phone connects fine, as does son's 5C
    • reset router, did not work
    • tried resetting network settings in phone, did not work
    • tried restoring phone as new, did not work
    • tried setting up guest network in Netgear router, did not work
    • errors message vary from "incorrect password" to "could not join"...sometimes won't show up at all
    • tried entering MAC address of phone as allowed in router settings (assigned IP), did not work
    • using WPS button on router, phone connected and worked while setup light flashed, but then stopped when timed out (weirdest one)
    • phone had 8.1.2 when this started, 8.1.3 has not helped, still same

I've tried every thing I can find online troubleshooting wise....any other thoughts? I've seen LOTS of other people mentioning this, but no solutions...everyone found their own workaround, but I have not...

Looks like this is a prevalent problem. I'm not factory resetting my router....setting up my camera DVR system was tough enough the first time.

Your post reminds me of the new "feature" they put in to ios 8 that scrambles the Mac address in some cases to make it harder to track you. Not sure if that has anything to do with anything but If the phone sends out different packets with different addresses, it could cause some routers to have a fit. Not sure if you can turn that feature off. Also it would not surprise me if that also triggers a bug in the wifi driver.

that was one thing apple was promoting as a privacy enhancement in ios 8 back in September.

i re-read about it here http://www.imore.com/closer-look-ios-8s-mac-randomization  and apparently there is no setting.

I Threw that out in case it would give someone an aha moment.
