Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

In concept it appears to be a good feature but I wonder if it is doing more harm than good.

Was using the iPad the other day and after a couple of sites it would no longer ping a google server. I noticed my router only had an IP and gateway on the Wan side and no DNS. Rebooted both several times and nothing. My Charter Broadband was receiving a 192 WAN address and then I noticed my Wireless was giving a 192 address on the Lan as well, Conflict?   So I changed my Lan IP's to  be a 10.X network and everything came up and so far the iPad has been working. Has anyone tried this?

I Think there is definetely something in this AWDL glitch. I am luckier than most in that my wifi rarely drops out. But I see erratic throughput at times. The way I fix it (albeit temporarily) is to swipe up control centre and select the AirPlay icon which then shows a list of my AirPlay devices (airport express and Apple TV 2nd gen). If I cancel and return to whatever I was browsing then bingo back to full speed. So clearly presence of AirPlay devices is causing some problems. Strangely this problem only shows itself on my iPhone 5s but not my iPad third gem. It started the minute the wretched ios 8 arrived and has stayed an issue with every subsequent release. Of course on ios 7 everything ran perfectly! It ***** that apple saw fit to didle with the code and try fixing what didn't need fixing. It ***** even more that they don't address the bug. Whilst the apple watch is exciting they should not neglect the many many bugs in ios 8 because of it.

from a personal standpoint I am sure I could fix my issue if I unplugged all my AirPlay devices but why should I. Apple broke the functionality and for that they are causing much personal resentment towards them. I also wish they didn't keep pushing a new ios every year and actually give an existing ios time to mature. Ios 7 was great and given a two or three year run would of been very mature and stable. But constant new iOS releases make the list of bugs grow and grow with no desire to fix them because they are already trying to write ios 9, ios 10 etc

That's interesting now.....I haven't had a problem with 3 iPads or 3 iPhones until last week. I got a Apple TV for XMAS though....hmmmmm.....some more troubleshooting to do. I wonder if it needs resetting???

Sorry to hear a lot of people are having issues.

    I just wanted to chime in that I am personally running the following with no issues what so ever;

    IPhone 6+ - MGAU2LL/A (ATT Locked)

    IPhone 6+ - NGAM2LL/A (Verizon Unlocked)

    IPad Air 1 - ME9997LL/A

    IPhone 5 - MD654LL/A

    House:

WPA2-PSK with 16 character key on Linksys WRT1900AC with OpenWRT MCWRT AAv1.0.8

    Office:

WPA2-EAP with 16 character key on a Cisco Aironet 2702I Farm with Stock 15.3.3-JAB

I've also only heard two end users run into any issues with this configuration, after swapping one of the devices with the carrier, the problem went away.  One an IPhone 5 and the other an IPhone 5S

Well I went to the Apple Store today. They didn't little test and found I had a few conflicts with my apps they said I should do a complete restore from backup and try againthey did say more people that complain the more chance something will be done but if not enough people are complaining about it.C cannot be not much wrong with that because they have sold millions and millions of these devicesI now have the latest version on my phone and on my tablet and I'm still getting the same problems

    Write to Apple directly at:

    http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html

Since this is a user forum, Apple doesn't seem to be monitoring it.

After giving them feedback it’s possible that you wouldn't get a response from Apple either, but at least they will have your feedback on the record.

Yeah, problem is I've tried the phone restore, both WITH and WITHOUT using a prior backup. Even "from new" software it wouldn't connect.

I went and left my feedback and linked this thread to them.

    HI,

IPv4 addresses starting 192.168.x.x are private addresses and not routed over the Internet, so you should never see one of these as the WAN address, however you have only said a 192 address, so could be legitimate if not 192.168 - see  https://www.arin.net/knowledge/address_filters.html. Your router will transparently translate the private 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x  addresses you are using on the LAN side to the usually single public IP WAN address which is allocated by (and registered to) your ISP.

PPerhaps if everyone who is covered by warranty or Applecare took their device to an Apple Store to get sorted and continue to do so again and again if problem not resolved then they (Apple) may get the message, especially if they are replacing phones and pads. Unfortunately my iPhone 4s is past this or else that is what I would be doing.

Wow. Thanks a lot apple! Ive been commenting throughout this thread when it initially started. opened up a case with a senior manager, done all the wifi logs and sent them what they asked for. From September until December they were giving me the complete run around and kept asking me for the same information each time we spoke. They refused to collect my ipad and look at the issue themselves and instead kept trying to pin the issue on my excellent router. Eventually i didnt bother getting back to them after we last spoke because they wanted me to film my ios8 mini retina along side my mums ios7 mini retina to show a difference between start up times and wifi etc. I got so fed up i just didnt bother sending them that after the heap of **** they had already got me to send. my wifi improved after the update just before this update but now with this latest update all the same f***** issues are cropping up again. The most obvious is the wifi drops. I can't articulate my anger very well here without getting this comment deleted. I am pretty sure they do not care about this issue as they have been aware of it for around 6 months now. It is pretty sad that the only people appearing to actively try and resolve apples ****** are the people on this thread, you guys should get paid instead of their amazing engineers. Once again, thank you very much apple.

I've been having the same problems as everyone is describing here for months.  We're all pretty sure it's an issue with some iPads(I have a third generation iPad ) and IOS8 as my wife has a newer iPad mini with IOS 8.1.3, the same IOS as me and she isn't seeing any issues and/or problems.  I did find the article below and it's pretty much what I'm experiencing except my speeds are getting down to .05Mbps.

I'm just wondering if Apple knows about this but won't publicly address it and/or fix it hoping the few people that are experiencing this will just go buy a new iPad from them as that is really the only way to fix this issues without jailbreaking and/or doing something unsupported.

Hi, if you want to know whether Apple knows about this then lets see see how long your link to the wifried article lasts in your post.

Unfortunately most people here are of the belief that they are too busy bodging the bug ridden IOS8 ready for the iWatch, rather than spending time to fix the wi-fi issues. I just read a very interesting article about Apple design and it refers to the role marketing now have in the process since Jobs, fine in principle but maybe we are now witnessing the results of it being too invasive.

Buried in this thread I saw someone saying that Apple was calling people trying to collect information about this problem.  I'm not sure if that's true or not.  I like Apple's products but their problem is they don't listen to their customers and they put design over function.  I mean look at the iPhone 4 with the grip of death.  Who the heck approved an exposed antenna?  Did they say it was a design flaw and/or an engineering nightmare?  No.  They said we'll give you a free silicone bumper and hope the talk would die down.  I feel the same is going to happen here.  If it does do I have the legal right to take Apple to small claims court because their software update broke my iPad?  It would be interesting but I'm sure buried in what we have to approve to install it we're agreeing to not hold them liable for anything even if laser beams came out of the screen and murdered us after an update.

Apple engineering called me about 10 days ago to get more info about OSX WiFi issues.  I told them I had no OSX issues but did have IOS8 WiFi issues.  They put me on speaker phone and several engineers listened to my issue.  They then stated that were really the OSX team and that the IOS team would contact me in 2-3 days to have me install some special software on my phone to record the issue but they never did.  From the discussion I had with them it appears they are aware of the issue.  Lately my iphone and WiFi have much better and I have only had one no connection issue in the last 2 weeks.
