Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

Yes I also got a call from Apple. And they are trying to debug things. Lets see if solution is found.

my solution: I am requesting a chargeback from my credit card company. I read people are starting to do this and the more of us that do this a) the more likely credit card companies are to support our claims and b) Apple will have more in$entive to fix the problem.

credit card companies are on your side, and they have a legal obligation to fully investigate all claims. Whenever i have a problem with a product that can't be resolved easily, I consider a chargeback. 90% of the time my credit card company issues me a refund in the amount I requested.

8.1.3 has certainly exacerbated the problem. I find it hard to believe such a prolonged lack of solution to a problem affecting so many Apple product owners.

I believe there are somewhere in the order of .7 million references to this in various forums.

Unsure if this a solution for all but I finally caved in and bought a new router, a TENDA 300 Mbps, model W309R+. My wifi hasn't dropped since, neither on my Macbook nor my iPad 3. I now got an iPhone 6 and it too seems to work without any issues. Still having location issues on my Mac (locating a position where I have never been connected) and my iPad which locates my previous address 200 km away.....but that is of course an issue for another thread

My question is - why should I buy new router? When same router works with all other devices?

If your solution is true then it clearly means that iPhone is not tolerant and needs specific WiFi settings / environment. Which is wrong.

same problem in my iPad mini. I think it is hardware defect. wfi work in the range 5 mtr, out of 5mtr range wifi signal only show but connection lost. Apple company must return the product immediately from all market.

All these solutions which suggest purchasing a new router, or even re-setting the router are ridiculous!  What if I'm traveling (in Mexico today) and each hotel & lodging gives me the same problem? Do I just travel the country and re-set everyone's router? Or buy them all new routers? Stuff like this makes me thankful that I never converted over into the Mac/Apple world many years ago.

Come On!! Let's have a solution!! Some of my Google searches are turning up wi-fi/ipod issues from 4 years ago.

I've had this problem while my iPad was connected to each of my three APs and in hotels.  A response of buy a new router/AP is like saying my car isn't running well on the road and the suggestions is to drive on a different road.  It's not fixing the core and/or common problem.

Witg problems requiring a software fix, we can only suggest work-arounds.  It the best we can do.

For hotels, cross your fingers or carry along a mifi device.  I recently signed up for FreedomPop.com. http://www.freedompop.com
