Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

    4) needs to be replaced

    5) needs an adjustment (iOS and OS X: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points - Apple Support)

Right - What about the people who rolled back to iOS 7 and "got everything working"?  They're running OUTDATED OPERATING SYSTEMS.  They'll just miss out on security patches, enhancements additional bug fixes and new features.  How many companies be they Apple or Microsoft encourage their customers to stay behind so their old printers will still work?

I sure hope you’re not in the Information Technology field as one your troubleshooting skills are awful and two blindly offering ways to fix a problem can be expensive and won’t guarantee results.  So according to your logic when I upgraded to IOS8 I need to buy a new home AP(because mine has the latest firmware), upgrade my cell phone as it is also up to date, buy a new portable AP since that has the most recent up to date software, and demand that hotels and businesses I work from adjust their hardware, if not upgrade it, so that my iPad with IOS8 will work.  You’re logic is more than flawed, it’s wrong.  Devices meet certain standards especially when it comes to wireless protocols.  It pointing to an issue with Apple's AirPlay that is a propitiatory protocol that is not part of WIFI standards.  If that's true then it is Apple that is not following the rules and protocols thus it is the problem, not everyone else.

It reminds me when I bought new tires for my car.  The ride was much stiffer than before.  What changed? Well the tires did but according to your logic it’s the road’s fault for not keeping up with technology and I should demand that the state and government fix the roads to accommodate my problem.   Um, no.

So we should not run IOS7, even though it works and use IOS8 even though it gives me speeds of .05Mbps because of security?  What good is an updated OS when you’re getting less than dial up speeds to the point where the device is unusable?

I’m sorry but I feel you’re an Apple fan boy where you think like there, that they can do no wrong.  4 words.  iPhone 4 Death Grip.

DDear resident troll, It appears that my iPad is so old that I need to buy a new one as it is putting double capital letters at the start of each post. Thanks to your cutting insight, I now know this problem is not down to a bug in iOS 8 but due to me not constantly keeping my devices up to date to keep pace with changes to the English language that have taken place since I first bought it. How stupid I feel now! Fancy me thinking that the fact my iPad didn't do this when running iOS 7 and my other none Apple devices still don't do this, was down to Apple, and not my own fault. Doh

    (three words "4"'isn't a word.  It's a numeral.)

Debunk all you like.  Some will draw their own conclusions and move towards a solution.  Some here already have (at least the ones who have bothered to report back)... Doesn't take a fan boy or a an Apple hater to figure out how to move forward...

Probably time to ditch those iPhone 4s anyway...  When were they released again?

So now you're pointing out my grammar mistakes?  It shows that you're trying to change the subject as you're getting destroyed on this forum.  It's also pretty clear by you not answering any questions you can't think independently.  It's pretty clear we're right here, except for you.

You're suggestions are wrong and you're wrong but then again if you are one of the Apple zombies than you'll be like Apple defending their choices and decisions saying Apple is perfect in every way and it's everyone else's fault.

When you say some will draw their own conclusion and move toward a solution what do you mean?  If you're so confident that if I throw away my 2 year old AP, 1.5 year phone, and older mobile AP to fix a problem that started when going from IOS7 to IOS8 then please send me a check.  Also I'll give you a list of hotels and hotspots I plan on using this year and you contact them demanding they change their settings and possibly hardware now that I'm running IOS8.  Gosh your suggestions and troubleshooting is so flawed and wrong.  If you look at previous posts it appears tAirPlay's proprietary protocol is to blame.  If you do research disabling it(have to have a jailbreaked device)resolves the issue so any logical person could determine it's a problem with Apple, not everyone else!

I don't have an iPhone 4s but let me ask you this questions.  With the whole death grip on the iPhone 4S model was apple at fault?

Oh, one more thing mmurray47.  If my home AP is the problem then how come my girlfriend's iPad mini isn't experiencing the same problem as her's is running the same version of IOS8 as my iPad third generation that is having problems?  I mean according to your logic if the AP was the issue for your numerous reasons then both of our iPads would be having the same exact problem, but they don't.

In your reply to Bootsox you said:  ...a buddy who was almost identified"...  Seriously?

My, my, what a short memory you have!!!  Apparently you forgot about your buddy Philly_Phan, a troll just like you who you highly praised.  He had nothing to offer just like you - just more of the same mindless diatribes blaming users for not replacing routers, phones, iPads, etc.  Seriously!!!

Gosh, I guess instead of quality help here we've got the typical flame presence as in all forums, facebook, etc.

OK I cannot help but think of the story which was on PBS or NPR about how one day the US rail corporations were asking "Why can't we just build all our tracks widths at 12 feet, or 20 feet apart and carry lots more cargo per trip?" Why are all railroad cars 8'6" wide (I'm making this figure up). Answer: Rail Cars have always been this way. Why? The first cars in the US were designed after cars in the UK. Why? Cars in the UK were always that way. Why? They were originally measured from the width of the carriages traveling the roads. Why? The carriage width goes back to Roman times. Why? Roman measurements all come from their carriages after the original chariot widths. So, these scientist go back into Roman history and ask "Why is a chariot set at this width?" Because if your measure across 2 horses ***** you end up with the proper measurement.

In this world I guess Apple can go ahead and reconfigure wifi and inconvenience us for a year or two until we catch up the their ideas of right. In my case I have to walk down the street to get a connection, and once I'm back home I guess I'm out the price of a "modern" router.

NNext portable, hand held device I own will be Android. Done.

A couple of thoughts on your post....

I have been following this thread for quite a while (months) and it contained little or no flames until mmurray47 and philly_phan joined in with nothing to offer other than blaming the issue on users.  Mercifully, philly_phan has not posted for a while, but Mike Murray or Chill or whatever he goes by these days is still trolling around blaming all issues on users settings and equipment.  Responding to murray in a serious manner is just a waste of time as others have noted.

The Wi-Fi problems have been well researched, not just here but in other forums and articles.  Most people are not having problems OR are not aware of them, I have a neighbor with very poor speeds but she had no idea this was the case.  A while back some one posted a link to a very good article about the cause and potential solution.  The link has been reposted several times but the Apple Host removes it.  I have recommended that murray read this article but he refuses to do so or does not understand the contents.

Apple has been contacting lots of the posters here including me (got an email which they get from our log in).  One their reps (Kevin) has been taking detailed logs of our devices so I suspect that Apple is trying to solve the problem.  However I have also been told by an AppleCare Level 2 tech that their main priority is iOS 8.2 for the iWatch and our Wi-Fi issues are secondary.

Lastly, unless your router is very old I would not go out and buy a new one.  I have a rather new Cisco Linksys EA4500 Dual Band N router and I have the issue.  I also have 3 other APs to test with, all the same.  Contrary to the link that murray posted a page or two ago about routers, there are N routers with dual bands (mine is not the only one).  One does not need an AC router to get dual bands, I get both 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz out of mine.  His link was incorrect.

    Hope this helps...

I also posted a link to a site that describes the problem a few day ago.  It was also removed(see below).

We know Apple knows about this as they are reading posts and editing them, or............they are just removing links for whatever reason.  Let's see.

www.microsoft.com .  Let's see if Apple removes that link or

www.apple.com let's see if Apple removes that link.

At this point I feel Apple broke my hardware and if so they need to fix it either by choice or other legal ways.  Buying a new iPad when they pushed IOS8 to it breaking it is not an acceptable answer and for me to keep waiting is not an acceptable answer also.  They need to admit there is a problem and give us a timeline of when it will be fixed.  If not then their customers need to get together and do something about it.

I've been having the same problems as everyone is describing here for months.  We're all pretty sure it's an issue with some iPads(I have a third generation iPad ) and IOS8 as my wife has a newer iPad mini with IOS 8.1.3, the same IOS as me and she isn't seeing any issues and/or problems.  I did find the article below and it's pretty much what I'm experiencing except my speeds are getting down to .05Mbps.

I'm just wondering if Apple knows about this but won't publicly address it and/or fix it hoping the few people that are experiencing this will just go buy a new iPad from them as that is really the only way to fix this issues without jailbreaking and/or doing something unsupported.

Here's a diatribe you might understand:

Unsure if this a solution for all but I finally caved in and bought a new router, a TENDA 300 Mbps, model W309R+. My wifi hasn't dropped since, neither on my Macbook nor my iPad 3. I now got an iPhone 6 and it too seems to work without any issues. Still having location issues on my Mac (locating a position where I have never been connected) and my iPad which locates my previous address 200 km away.....but that is of course an issue for another thread"

WWhen I post on this site there are double caps that appear at the beginning. I was told by someone here, with many little dots by there name, that it was a problem with Java and it only happens when an ipad is used. Since this is an Apple site I would have thought Java would have fixed this mistake by now. I could just backspace over the first word myself and correct it every time, but then why should I fix Java's mistake that caused my ipad to behave like this?

The problem is not with Java. The problem is with Jive, the software that runs this forum. Apple is not the maker of Jive. The Jive software is not without its drawbacks, however, it is apparently about the only software available to handle a forum of this size and traffic.

I bought a new Asus RT-AC87U and I still have the same problems of no traffic between the router and the iphone 6 after receiving a notification usually after being using the iphone for a while.

So I think buying a new router is not the solution for this problem.

Hi raveiga.  You are right as most of the posters here know.  A new router will not solve the problem.  The temporary fix that occurs does not last.

For what it is worth, there have been reports you can connect an lighting to a usb-camera-connection kit to a usb hub to a usb-to- ethernet connector to get an internet connection.
