Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

If you can search back posts, I have a detailed description of my troubleshooting so far. I feel it's pretty lengthy....certainly more than the average Joe!

Was using the iPad the other day and after a couple of sites it would no longer ping a google server. I noticed my router only had an IP and gateway on the Wan side and no DNS. Rebooted both several times and nothing. My Charter Broadband was receiving a 192 WAN address and then I noticed my Wireless was giving a 192 address on the Lan as well, Conflict?   So I changed my Lan IP's to  be a 10.X network and everything came up and so far the iPad has been working. Has anyone tried changing the local WAN ip subnet to a 10.X instead if the router default of 192.x - Haven't had a freeze in a week.

I have posted in the early days of this post stating that this appears to be an Apple issue with the latest update.

I have tried many suggestions that have been put forward and had some success but ultimately none solved the issue of disconnecting.

I have recently installed a Meraki AP and I no longer have the issue of disconnecting.

For me the issue is with the BT Infinity router, and I have had 2 both with the same issue.

This also effected Android phones but not OSX or Windows 7 or 8.1

    Hope this helps

Since 8.1.3 my iPhone 6 Plus has had dreaded slow or no data on Wifi. My home AP is a Meraki MR18. My wifes iPhone 6, iPad Air and my iPad Air 2 are all at 8.1.3 and do not suffer this problem. Originally resetting my network connection worked, but that no longer works. Disabling wifi, rebooting, etc, nothing works. I created a new SSID on the MR18 and it works, but it will fail again in the near term. A friend with the iPhone 6 has this issue at his home on totally different equipment, and I can see the evidence in our data plan as the usage from his end has grown drastically.

I had zero issues with this until 8.1.3.

Edit : Come on Apple and address this stupidity.

Jarred, It explains why resetting your SSID or other router parameters gives you a temporary Wi-Fi bounce but this short fix does not last as he explains in detail.

I have had so many problems that I am again searching out solutions.  I have a Mid 2011 MacBook Air, that I just had apple replace the board, an iPhone 6+, (my husband's iPhone 6+, and a couple of mini iPads (first generation mini's)  I had to replace the mini and my original iPhone 5 when all these problems occurred with the upgrades a while back.  I have kept one iPad on iOS 7.  I have had to trouble shoot Time Warner speeds...ok, but their modem/router went down, changing from aol mail to me.com, etc.  Everything is slow or doesn't work.  Safari loads are incredibly slow, so I tried firefox, which worked better.  Aol mail wasn't being received by recipients and mail was coming in an hour later.  Switched to Apple mail for sending and it went through.  Aol sign in keeps getting dropped by my MacBook Air, and another device.  I'm losing track as to what is working or not working.  I don't know what I should be doing to fix ALL of my problems, but my production time is really stressful having to recheck everything to see who is or is not receiving things.

I Have same problem too (iOS 8.1.3)

Seems to be with both iPhone 6 and iPad Air 2 where I am connected to home WiFi and next thing I am using the 3G/4G connection instead.

If I turn off WiFi and then back on again, it reconnects ok. Not a good situation if you "over use" your mobile data.

Judging by the other comments here it appears to be an iOS thing, so I have not done any troubleshooting with my home network, which has not been modified since I noticed this dropout situation. Now that I think about it, the same problem has happen at my beach house and another 2 office locations. I will take more notice in future and report back if I can detect some sort of pattern.

Hopefully Apple will notice this problem and do a fix because it appears to be outside our control.

Why is this still an issue.  i have an iPad mini  and have to reduce my Wifi down to 802.11g to get a stable connection.  that is rubbish as i have an 80mb internet connection and only get 20mb via the wifi.  i cannot believe Apple still have not sorted this out.  it has been going on for far too long.  Apple do know of the issue as i have had had apple guys incontact with me asking for diagnostic data.  i dont want to go and spend £100+ on a new router when every other device in the house works fine apart from the mini

There have been some success but users should not have to go through this everytime Apple does some update.  This not only applies to IOS but also to OSX.  Even with my new AC router I get an occasional slow/no connect about once every 1-2 weeks which at this point is tolerable.

A last, IOS 8 issues are starting to make the mainstream media:

Article in today's Times panning Apple for wifi dropouts leading to switching to 3G and gobbling up of user's data allowance (= massive bills).

This is a secondary effect I had not considered wrt wifi drop-out issues.

Somehow I don't believe any company would  progress if they thought  along those lines.
