Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

I got that answer also, but after starting fresh, no restore whatsoever on my ipad, iPhone and Mac, none of it works.  I do have a new question.  I don't know if asking here works, but I am having problems with calls not going through.  Is anyone else having that happen?

TThat's not really an issue about wi-fi & can't really moan about the software

A year ago I bought my first ever Apple product. An iPad mini (1st version as I don't earn much and it took a long time to save up). I was extremely pleased until last September. Rather foolishly, I rushed to update to IOS 8. this issue has been driving me crazy for months now. Every time I reboot my router it upsets my Sky TV box, so I have to reboot that, which does not always go well, and I end up losing all my series links and I have to set them all up again. We pay the (extremely high) Apple prices to avoid this sort of thing. If we were prepared to put up with this sort of service we'd have bought something else And saved some money. I am so disappointed with Apple. I shan't be buying a second product from them. When I telephoned them to discuss the problem, they said why didn't I trade it in for the mini3 which they said didn't have the problem (really? Is that true? IPhone 6 users report problems too and they must be very up to date?) they'd give me £70 as a trade-in! I'm worried that as this problem has been going on for so long that they'll end up not bothering to fix it at all. But, at least, coming on here, now I don't feel like the only one.

Do we have any consumer issues experts out there? Is there any more we could be doing to encourage Apple to get this sorted out?

    very best regards

You probably do not need to reboot the router.  You could log into your router and force drop whatever connect your ipad is using. There are other work-arounds like resting your wifi connection on the ipad.

Dear Robert, thank you so much for the suggestions. How do I log into my router And how do I force drop? And what does resting my wifi connection on the iPad mean, please?  Do you mean rest my iPad on top of the router box? I'm sorry to seem dense, but I fear I may be!

    very best regards

Not sure if this was suggested before but has anyone registered their ios Mac addresses in their router so the device is always given the same ip address? I did that a LONG time ago to try to get wifi sync with iTunes to be as stable as possible. I wonder if the iOS device keeps all the ip addresses it got and if that can cause it to go squirrelly when it wakes up to renegotiate...

you might need to disassociate your wifi after registering it.. Hopefully ios would delete all info about the wifi profile when it's deleted. For fun I'd suggest register, disassociate, reboot ios, re-join.

Re consumer experts, I suspect people might have a claim for a refund on a new phone as it is obviously not meeting the specification advertised

For other phones that have got the problem after software upgrade it might be a bit more interesting, like with the iPhone 4 fiasco

Logging into your router.  In general you use your favorite web browser and type in the address of the router.  I use

    192.168.0.1

    or

    192.168.1.1

You may have to use a user name and password.  try admin and password

on your ios device, you can try you wifi connection for a bit by:

    setting > wifi

turn off wifi by toggle Wi-Fi

    or

tap on your wifi network name

    tap on "Forget this Network"

I have had this problem too, this has sucked up my time for the whole day with resets, reboots changing settings everywhere I can access - then finally I simply turned on my airplane mode and "WIFI" started!! I was hesitant to turn Airplane mode off again but when I did the WIFI still working. Too simply but true in my case, hope this fixes for others as it did for mine. But apple should fix this, don't allow someone to tell you its a device fault and too bad buy another- I'm sure with all similar problems people are having and that different things fix it for different people its not the fault of the device itself but the IOS has issues, my phone worked fine before upgrade no coincidence I'm sure, and other devices including another apple that hasn't, and one that has, had upgrades all working fine- to tell me password incorrect when I know its right over and over. another simple fix I tried from very much earlier posts I found was to enable 3G, 4G off then on again this didn't work for me but did for others I thought it was pretty lame after I tried it but going on how lame my fix was its worth a try for others as it is the same concept. GOOD LUCK

Same issue with 5s. Been buying data bundles from phone operator because can't get wifi at all exactly since the upgrade to ios8. Was told at Apple store that the problem was my non-apple-issued screen, which I replaced at a quarter of the cost Apple was charging. Four months before I can upgrade out of this hole.

How could the screen cause problems with wi-fi?

Perhaps my problems are because I've got a non-Apple case on my phone!

Well then... This comment answers my question about how I got my wi-fi problems. Replaced cracked screen on my ipod touch 5th gen last year. What a mess. Any hints to when or if a solution will arrive? And please, again: Don't suggest I purchase a new router since I'm trying to use this device in hotels, cafes, hotspots... and "replacing my router" is just plain silly.

The Common Sense Police have confirmed that this is couldn't possibly cause the Wi-Fi problem, since you apparently didn't have a problem until you upgraded to iOS8.  They have also confirmed that the only way "out of this hole" for you and everyone else is for Apple to provide a s/w update to iOS8.  10-4... over and out.
