Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

It was just their excuse. The problem is software!

I don't know if this will help any of you. But I use Google fiber ipv6 DNS on my Apple device.. iPhone 6 Plus and iPad mini... Never had Wi-Fi issues... I also used the same DNS on my iPhone 5/5s.... For some reason it just works the best.. Here you go... Just replace your DNS in your Wi-Fi and you should notice better performance... Hope this fixes your problems.. I have never had one Wi-Fi issue with any Apple update on any of my Apple products...  However I close all apps and give the iPhone/iPad a fresh restart and turn the screen auto lock off before install.... so the install isn't interrupted... I just turn the screen brightness down to 10% or so... Hope this helps...Google fiber ipv6 DNS posted below... Even if you don't have ipv6 service... It helps so try it before you don't think it will help... Just erase and back out one screen and your wifi will replace your DNS number with old DNS number you had before test if you don't think it helped...

Will your solution work when using my iPad 2 at my local coffee shop, would I need to persuade the owner to make the changes you have suggested?

Yep... No problems... When you log into each wifi you will be assigned a DNS from the internet provider.. So it must be changed.. But will be remembered until you tell device to forget this network... Coffee shop don't need to change anything.. Internet providers never give you fast DNS servers... So keep Google fiber ipv6 DNS in your email.. Put it in archive or important files... Then copy and paste in the DNS line when you access new Wi-Fi location... That's it...

Most people run speed tests on their home internet. Like speedtest.net .. However most never run DNS benchmark speed tests... This will test 1000's of DNS servers near you... Then give you the fastest DNS server in millisecond response times... Lowest ms response time are the one's you want.. The fastest two for your settings... Run the test a few times to make sure you get the same results from the DNS server.. ... Use these results for your home Wi-Fi DNS setting in your Wi-Fi or router... These ipv4 settings don't effect iPhone's ipv6 setting.... It's away from the ipv4 so it seperates your device from other data packs streaming to devices on the network..... Just access the settings and install primary and secondary DNS servers.. Your network will work much better.....

    Try this...   http://code.google.com/p/namebench/

    Or...     https://www.grc.com/dns/benchmark.htm

I hate to be cynical, but I will ask you directly, is this one of those "solutions" that just wastes everyone's time (a bit like the one were everyone dashed out and bought a new router)?

Why should fiddling with DNS settings repair the damage done by Apple's faulty software?

I Wonder if they will bother fixing the AWDL bug in iOS 8.2 or 8.3. Whenever I have AirPlay on in my network it causes the wifi to become quite erratic. Really annoying seeing as ios 7 exhibited no such issues

I'm guessing you won't try it... So because people knew the Earth was flat 100's of years ago... did that make it flat? It will help... I don't have any problems.. I update every iOS update... Never had/have issues... I pay for 50mbps download and 5 upload with WOW...  Fastest I can get in my area with all providers... Same speeds offered with all.. Yet I get bursts over 100Mbps download and 30 Mbps upload... So you figure it out... Science is experiments and verifying the results with observations... Well test it and observe for yourself.. Also...

FYI..... Apple has a little 3 year old secret... From the release of the iPhone 4S... ALL Apple devices receive 720p files from iTunes by default over wifi..... iPhone 4S and other Apple devices show on Apple web site.....Starting with the iPhone 4S... tech specs H.264 1080p 30 frames per second supported...  Download 1080p file into your laptop... 720p file must be deleted into recycle bin and deleted or iTunes will use 720p file by default over 1080p file... Install 1080p file on your computer if not installed by changing preferences from 720p download to 1080p default download..... right click any file to verify 1080p file... SYNC 1080p file with Apple device... You can verify 1080 file by looking a files in your device.... Here you go.. 1080p  Same with my iPad mini.... Capture 3.PNG

If you have a credible solution to the IOS8 issues I, as much as anybody, will be ecstatic.

Perhaps though, I will leave it for others to try your solution and hopefully they will report back on this board with appropriate feedback.

It takes 10 seconds to replace DNS in your iPhone... Look at your Wi-Fi and touch the blue I.... delete DNS and type one I posted above?? Is it Rocket science for you?

Thanks for the tip - but bear in mind not everyone who comments on here is a techie (me included)

And the point of the discussion is why should people who have paid out good money for an Apple product have to find their own solutions to a problem that has been created by Apple software, which they seem unable or unwilling to resolve

They seem to blame users - a number have been told to replace their routers, if you scroll through one person was told the problem was because they had a non-Apple screen replacement

(and who's your provider - I'd love to change to one that gives me 100mb)

No it's not rocket science. Your snarky attitude tells me you're not really sure of this fix.

I don't understand how changing a DNS will fix it when the problem is not being able to connect to a router's wifi in the first place??? Perhaps explain that for us simple-minded, non-rocket scientists.

Changing DNS settings might be OK at home, but what do I ask my companies IT department - change all their wi-fi because of a suggestion on a forum? (do you work for Apple as that might stand more chance)

And what about other places where I connect - bars, coffee shops, shopping malls?

If the solution is so simple why hasn't every commercial outlet done it?

I agree.  corporate networks may not allow your phone out via the firewall to contact the DNS server.

The static DNS fix did not work for me i had to set up a static IP address and DNS on my home network due to the dropping. it seems to be a lot more stable now.  it is almost like the iDevice keeps requesting the IP address but the router says that it is taken and then fails hence the drop.

Saying that i never noticed it dropping anywhere else apart from watching Netflix.  this is definitely a software issue on the part of Apple There must be something the network stack that is causing the problem.

to help with what Riddick187 says about the DNS Google's DNS addresses are 8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4.  they are the ones i use as the ones provided by my ISP are slow.  i have never had any issues with those and they are quick to update as well

Yeah, I don't really buy into the DNS fix. That won't help me when I'm trying to browse internally. I use things like File Browser to download off NAS drives. The core issue is the wifi and apple diddling with it so it doesn't work as before on iOS7. It's affecting people in different degrees of severity. I don't drop out but the presence of Airplay (which I am convinced is the AWDL bug) is causing intermittent drops in performance. Speedtest can trickle along and if I then flick up control center and tap the airplay icon it causes it to pick upto full speed. Very weird and very annoying. Plus under iOS 8 roaming in our house across three different access points (on non overlapping channels) doesn't work nearly as well as when we were on iOS 7. It doesn't let go off the weak wifi and get you onto the access point you can be right next to anymore or it takes ages. So you just end up with nothing working as the iOS gets confused on many occassions. Even if you go back to the original access point once this stage is reached it refuses to pick up unless you turn wifi off and then on again. It just works, well rubbish. iOS 8 is a minefield of bugs. And the forked developments of iOS 8.2, 8.3  and 8.4 plus iOS 9 can only spell more misery. I hope they sort it out but I am losing faith. This has gone on too long now. I am convinced it is the AWDL glitch that is causing many of us to come to grief.
