Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

My package is "up to 74mb"  I never get that on wireless, usually about 40 is the quickest. On desktop PC with Ethernet connection I always get over 60mb

But it's more than adequate for my needs - with 3 people using wireless, my son downloading music whilst playing games on line, & various other boxes connected we never have problems..... except for iphone losing connection

You using a 2.4 GHz channel or 5 GHz?? MY speed tops out at 44Mbps on 2.4 GHz channel... However 5 GHZ gets bursts over 100 with the DNS server I set in my router and the ipv6 DNS I use in my iPhone 6 plus.. R6300 has top speed of 1300 Mbps... Just can't buy that speed yet... Best bursts I get on download are over 150 Mbps.. And I only pay for 50 Mbps.. Old wifi is limited in speed... 5 GHZ is faster......  but 2.4 GHz has better range... The radio waves are farter apart and go through walls better... 5GHZ waves are closer together and that limits the range.... One other tip... I stuck a nail in the wall and hung the Wi-Fi like a picture... It's at the hight of my eyes on the wall....  Get it off the floor.. Out from behind the desk or laptop... And away from sitting 2 inches from your laptop.... Whatever the case may be... Get it as high on the wall your cable will allow...

BIG TIP*** Use cloud check app from App Store... Has wifi speed test and sweet pot speed test... So you see what speeds you get by how many feet you are away.. Like a signal checker.... This helps you find dead spots as you walk around it shows you what speeds you COULD get standing in that spot... Has audible indicator so you can hear as your wifi signal gets weaker and stronger..... I use no extenders for wifi and can walk anyplace in the house and have 3 bars on my iPhone/iPad wifi... even in the basement... Wifi is upstairs on the wall hanging like a picture in the middle of the house...

Do you also turn the auto screen lock off?? I never allow the install to be interrupted... I Never had iOS install fail or cause problems... I update to ALL iOS updates and I am running iOS 8.1.3 in my iPhone 6 plus and iPad mini now.. Never had one wifi issue with my iPhone 5 or 5S... Still use the same settings I have had for years... It's good you close apps... Do you give fresh restart before install?? I do...

Cloudcheck or Wi-Fi Sweetspots is another name for the same APP and  is all one word for both... and only an iPhone app... But you can still use it on iPad... search once ... if it don't pop up.. Hit search again... It will allow you to search iPad or iPhone only apps... Change to iPhone only if you are on iPad.... Enjoy!! This app only shows you what speeds you COULD Get with signal strength you have... As you walk away... you will see rate drop....

    Riddick,

I previously posted a reply to you which included a reference to an article summarizing in detail the issue many of us are having. The host removed my post in its entirety because the article, in addition to describing the problem, also included an “unacceptable solution”, something I strongly advise against as it violates Apple policy. In the past we have been able to post a Google search term for the article while not posting an actual link. It now appears that even a Google search term is not allowed. I strongly advise against any “unapproved solution” and have not done so myself as it violates the end user agreement and voids the warranty. I only posted the Google search term because of the explanations this article provides regarding the issue. Host, would you please advise if there is a way of posting the details of this article just for the technical description of the problem?  The Google search term for this article has been posted on this thread many times before, why not now? The article describes in detail an issue with AWDL and thus AirDrop/Bluetooth that appears to be the cause of the problem many of us are having here. Advice appreciated.

The rest of my post to Riddick continues here… (edited to not include any reference to the above).

Please Google XXXX… Please read this article in detail as it describes exactly what many of us have been experiencing for 5 months now. I realize that you cannot go back and read 130 pages of previous posts on this thread (I would not either) but those of us that have been posting for a while know that the DNS is not the cause. Changing the DNS was suggested by AppleCare early on to no avail (all posted here before). A word of CAUTION for those now trying it. As Mr. XXXX describes in the article above, when one changes any of the Wi-Fi settings, DNS included, one will get a Wi-Fi bounce, i.e., a temporary fix will occur until AWDL degrades performance again. This "fix" will not last.

In my case the issue occurs whenever I enable AirDrop on my iPad Airs and my iPhones. With AirDrop OFF I get speeds matching the ISP rate - with AirDrop ON my speeds drop to about 1 Mbps (sometimes as low as 0.1). My pings are always in the range of 20-22 ms and DNS is not the problem. And no, I never allow iOS updates to stop, I stay with the device until all done, not the issue.

Please also note that I have 4 iOS devices, 1 MacBook Pro Retina, 2 Dell PCs and 1 Toshiba PC (all wireless). The iOS devices are the only ones having this problem, the Dells and the Toshiba ALWAYS connect at stable speeds using the DNS issued by the router. The MacBook does also. This issue only affects my iOS devices and it did not affect any of them under iOS 7, only after updating to 8. And yes, I have done a complete Reset to factory and tested with no Apps installed other than a new fresh OOKLA Speed Test, and yes the issue occurred again. Also my iPhone 5 was replaced by Apple after many hours on the phone with AppleCare trying many different settings.  The new phone (not refurbished but brand new according to the Genius Bar) came with iOS 7, issue did not occur, updated to iOS 8 issue came back (all of this has been posted before in detail here). And yes, my router has both 2.4 and 5 GHz bands and issue occurs on both, not the issue.

As has been said before, a large number of users are having the problem and a large number of users are not. You are one of those not having the problem thus do not understand how others have it. If you were able to read the article I wanted to reference above you would understand why. Also if you were able to read the 130 pages of previous posts you would see that your suggestions have been tried before. I appreciate you trying however.

Apple has called many of the posters here, me included, and collected logs so they are aware of the issue. Whether they will do something about it or not is another matter.

Apple is aware that there is an issue.  An Apple helpdesk rep emailed me and we've spoken on the phone many times.  He had me install a WIFI logger and answer the questions below.  DNS has NOTHING to do with this as a speed test starts off fast and slows down to about .05Mbps in my case.  That's data transfer, not resolving names to IPs.  My fiancee's iPad mini with the same IOS does not exhibit this behavior on the same network so it's not DNS or my router.  There is something wacked with the IOS 8.x version on my iPad.  The way I see it Apple controls the hardware and software updates so it's a problem on their end, not everyone elses'

    Information about network:

    * Make

    * Model

    * Firmware Version

    * FCCID of AP/Router

    * Hardware Rev (Only needed if there is NO FCCID)

    * Does this problem occur if the AP/Router is rebooted?

    * When was the last time the AP/Router firmware was updated?

    Network Configuration:

    - Network Mode (b/g/n mixed, b/g only, a/b/g/n, n only etc)

    - Security (WPAv1 (TKIP), WPAv2 (AES), WPA-Mixed (TKIP+AES), WEP

    - Is a MAC filter used?

    - Is this a hidden network?

    Who your ISP?

What is the type of WAN connection (Cable, DSL, Fiber, etc)?

What speed is your internet connected rated at?

What is the name of the wireless network?

    Have you disabled WMM?

Is DHCP Enabled or is the user using static IP addressing?

Have you tried to connect closer to the Router? What is the outcome?

When the issue is experienced, do non-iOS devices work properly? Are these devices wireless? Sounds like you have other devices that are working, based on your post.

If using security, does the problem still occur with Open security?

Does the issue persist when rebooting the iOS device?

Does this issue only occur at home?

Has the user tried changing the operating channel?

Any other work-arounds? If so please describe.

What version of iOS is running on the Apple Device?

If Bluetooth is Disabled, do you still see this issue?

If Location is Disabled, do you still see this issue?

Distance from the Router(include multiple distances portraying signal strength if any)?

Do you have different WiFi name for 2.4Ghz and 5.0Ghz, if so which one was used?

If the customer sees an alert when attempting to join, what is the exact text of the alert?

Did this iOS device ever have expected Wi-Fi functionality?  If so, please elaborate when, what changed, etc.

Sorry to learn some of your comments have been deleted, I appreciate the advice you gave & am trying it

But I'm not surprised - the acolytes think that Apple can do no wrong. I and others have been complaining about products unable to upgrade (won't bore you with the details, but there is a lengthy thread).

Basically older iPod Touch can only run IOS6, yet many of the apps require IOS7 or later (perhaps lucky they don't use IOS8!). The Apple supporters say go & buy a new iPod, but the ones in question are about 2 years old. Supporters claim you should replace every year - great for Apples profits

I don't actually want IOS7, but I want the apps to work. Apple blame app developers, but they blame Apple

Never mind, thanks for your help anyway

Turn off air drop and bluetooth and you should have no issues... I don't use them and have NEVER had issues. If Apple deletes this post... Then we know it true... You should all still get the email... However my comment will still be deleted.... They don't understand we still get emails from posts they deleted from other users....

TThat's a shame I do use bluetooth my self for in the car And other things. I'm on a new phone as they decided my problem was hardware related. I did a profile thing last year and never heard back. This week I took it into the store after 4 or more calls to Apple care telling them the problems. I had to restore leave it for a week as a new phone then restore from back up. It failed to work so new phone with same issue. Sorry to say I have given up now.

The issue seems to be associated with WiFi/bluetooth not 3G/4G/bluetooth.

So you should be ok in your car.

You may still be able to do wireless transfer of files even when you have turned off Dropbox on your iPad.  Use a third party wifi file transfer app.  Dukto worked in ios 7.x, so it doesn't need all the latest ios 8.x features.

"Dukto is a simple application that allows you to share files between devices connected to the same (wireless) LAN network."

Also, people reported you could attach a usb keyboard to the ipad via the camera connection kit -- Usb keyboard, powered usb hub, camera connection kit then ipad.

I think you're right about disabling Airdrop and Bluetooth.  Below are my results running the speedtest app on my iPad when bluetooth was enabled and when was disabled.  I can 100% say when bluetooth is disabled my iPad does not slowdown.  This disproves theorys that it is a DNS issue and/or our routers.  It points to a software issue as from my understanding the WIFI circuitry and bluetooth circuity might be separate.  If it was DNS enabling and disabling bluetooth would not make a difference with WIFI speeds.  If it was our routers then enabling and disabling bluetooth would not make a difference in WIFI speed.  It flat out points to something in the iPad, the same iPad that Apple made using software that Apple created and made available to their customers.  In my mind Apple should be held responsible for breaking my iPad as they were in 100% control of the hardware and software.  They should be fixing my iPad via an available software update or buy me an iPad where I can use bluetooth without close to dial-up speeds.

This problem has been going on for months and so far Apple is keeping quiet on the issue not talking about it when in fact there is a problem.  It may not be with everyone's hardware but it's safe to say there is a problem.

    All measurements were taken consecutively

Bluetooth enabled .16Mbps down .95Mbps up

Bluetooth disabled 19.72Mbps down 4.37Mbps up

Bluetooth enabled .25Mbps down .49Mbps up

Bluetooth disabled 12.95Mbps down 4.89Mbps up

Well I'm going to have to go along with the self qualified "Technical Experts" as they refer to each other on this site.

There is nothing wrong with Apple's operating system. They don't make mistakes. Even their store clerks are Genius. If there is any credibility at all to what you "claim" they would know it. The over 600,000 views on this post and perhaps a few million overall for related posts are but a drop in the bucket compared to sales. Tell me in all honesty you didn't jailbreak your device. If that's the case there is nothing anyone here can do to help you.

You would be well suited to do as a long list of other posters here have done. Purchase a new Apple Air Port Extreme, get a new Ipad and when all else fails, press two buttons at the same time and be a happy camper with the results.

As far as your claim that Apple should somehow be responsible for breaking your device, well I'm sure you recall sections 7.4-7.6 of the terms and conditions that you read prior to updating.  Apple is not responsible for damages to your Ipad as a result of installing the operating system and it is You that is responsible for any costs of repairs. So let me reiterate, Apple is not responsible..
