Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

Really Tom??  Really??  Are you seriously posting all those things to try?  Is every person running iOS 8 supposed to go through all those ridiculous steps to get their device working?  Do you truly believe it is a consumer problem?  Well it isn't.  It is an Apple problem.

I have an older iPad - I think iPad2...wifi all but stopped; general processing has slowed to a crawl.   I wish I hadn't upgraded to IOS8!  Device is useless now.

My post got quoted on Cnet.com.  We'll see if that leads to anything.

    http://www.cnet.com/news/some-ios-8-users-report-sluggish-wi-fi-shorter-battery- life/

I believe the problem lies with the wireless drivers in iOS 8.  I have no proof to back that up, but I do know that Wifi is a lot more susceptible to interference and what channel is being used. If I'm close to my router the problem goes away for the most part, but I didn't need to be that close prior to updating.

I had to switch my 5 Ghz channel to get a reliable connection on my 5s running iOS 8.  Otherwise it stops sending data over Wifi for up to a second (tested by sending 1024 byte packets every 100 ms).  On the 2.4 Ghz side, I also tried a different channel and it's better, but still has problems with random second long dropouts periodically.  Rebooting the phone seems to get things working reliably again. Not all networks have this issue.  My guess is it depends on neighboring networks.  My 5 Ghz network is 802.11n only (40 Mhz). My 2.4 Ghz is set to auto (20 MHz) because I have 2 legacy 802.11g devices.

To be clear, I'm not seeing slow downs per say.  I can still get 40 Mbps up to 80 Mbps on speed tests, it's just the phone starts dropping Wifi packets randomly which drops throughput and can cause apps to complain of lost connection periodically.

I ran the same tests on my iPad 2 and iPhone 4s running iOS 7.1.2 and both drop packets occasionally, but no where near as badly as my iPhone 5s running iOS 8.0 does now.  I'm taking at least 10 times as many.

I talked to someone who had an iPhone 6 and he said Wifi is great, but he's running an 802.11ac router.  Perhaps Apple tweaked the drivers for that and somehow broke it for 802.11n and below.

Well it's halfway through the next day for me & disabling the WIFI location services trick has died on me   iPad on 7 is fine, iPhone on 8 is full of timeouts again.  Nothing else was changed AFAIK so I give up.

I had a problem with my iPhone 6 where my 2.4ghz wireless connection was very poor (less than 1mbps). After many attempts to fix (reset phone, reset wireless settings) the thing that fixed it for me was to change my security setting to WPA2-Personal (it was WEP). My 5ghz wireless-n connection was always working fine and it was already set to WPA2-Personal.

Read iOS and OS X: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points. Clearly states that WPA2 Personal (AES) is recommended and that WEP is "not recommended for compatibility, reliability, performance, and security reasons."

    Hope this helps others.

Thank you SaltWater, you have spelled it briefly as it is!  I am sorely regretting the upgrade to iOS 8. I'd say if you (APPLE) is

not able to find a solution promptly, PLEASE allow to downgrade effective immediately

Changing my wireless security to WPA2 is what fixed it for me also. Had been using WEP for years with no problems so I had no reason to switch it. I'm also getting a lot faster wifi speeds than I was before. Also I'm on Verizon Fios if that helps anyone, which I believe is automatically on WPA or WPA2 if you use the preset password. ( I did not and had changed it to WEP) just wondering if anyone has just tried to connect without any wifi security enabled to see if that is their problem.

Same for me - iPad Air having all kinds of WIFI problems since iOS 8 update. Every time there's a major update, every iPad I've ever had runs into major WIFI issues. It's extremely frustrating. You'd think they'd figure out this crap - since it's consistently an issue - before rolling out these updates. However, my iPhone 5S is NOT having any issues. BTW, we're already on WPA2, so that's not our answer.

Finally after 5 hours of looking for solution, I restored my iPad2 (still with iOS 8) and performed a DHCP lease renewal as suggested by someone on this forum. My iPad2 is now back to normal :-) Hope it works for some of you.

I'm already using WPA2    Every time we change something network related, whether it's security, DNS, different band, different channel etc ... we're going to drop out & reconnect.  It's that that brings it back to life (albeit temporarily), not the action that caused the reconnect.

Like someone a few posts back, I have no trouble blitzing a speed test whilst Safari is still spinning it's stupid wheel.

I have spoken to Apple Support on the phone and they are under the same thinking that this issue is a Compatibility Issue with some devices I have been testing this with other brands of WiFi Modems and WiFi Routers and the ones I have issues with is Billion 7800NL and Cisco Linksys E4200 however had happened with the Sierra 4G WiFi Mobile as well.

It has been put through to there Engineers to be looked into to try and find out what is going on they will get back to me as soon as they have anything new.

I have an iPad air that is constantly dropping the connection to my 802.11ac router since I installed iOS 8. Interestingly I have a wifi range extender that is 802.11n and connecting the ipad that way stablizes my connection. My new iphone 6 doesn't seem to have any problems with my 802.11ac router and the speeds are great.

This cannot be a compatibility problem. My routers are Apple Airport Extremes. Still, on my iPad Air the Wlan connection breaks down about once a day, and the only way I can fix it is by turning off the iPad and turning it on again; a software reset is insufficient. Other devices are unaffected; only the iPad Air.

    Damned nuisance!

my  iPad air too. Wifi is so slow. I am using latest generation retina MacBook

i have no problem with my MacBook our my

android phone. I have airport express which is the latest generation too. One invests more than 3000 euros in shiitty  apple ecosystem and end users are still frustrated. Standard of apple is going to the street dogs
