Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

yep definetely major problems surrounding bluetooth, airdrop, AirPlay in ios 8 as yet unaddressed which remains farcical. another poster has been kind enough to alert many of us to the wifried glitch. Personally I don't use Bluetooth much but I do use AirPlay as I have airport express and Apple TV. I see some very erratic speed drops in my wifi all through ios 8 (most noticeably on the iPhone 5s), often cured momentarily by swiping up control centre and tapping on the AirPlay icon to view the device list. It never lasts though. If I unplug both my AirPlay devices so the AirPlay icon doesn't appear then all is fine. It's totally lame. I have reported to apple many times in painful phone calls, the genius guys don't want to know, and reporting on their feedback page is as useful as screaming for help at the top of Everest. The AirPlay, airdrop glitch is responsible. There are other issues too which I am lucky i avoid but this should be fixed. I mean it's their own hardware and technologies causing the grief. I guess the reason many many millions don't notice issues is because most regular  users don't have Bluetooth on much if at all and even less probably have AirPlay dvices. so that's why many claim all is ok. But this thread is very real evidence of a serious issue in my eyes.  Very disappointed as ios 7 was a joy but we have endured this now for 7 or 8 months. So tired of it all, I want to like their stuff but am getting seriously put off. They don't listen.

I can confirm the same results. I have never had any Wi-Fi issues with my iPhone or iPad. Only after I installed my new 1080 P third-generation AppleTV into my Wi-Fi network... My network went to all over the place. I had very low Internet speeds and very unstable Wi-Fi. I was using the 5 GHz channel I even switched to the 2.4 GHz channel. The only way I was able to fix it was to connect the Apple TV with Internet cable. Now I have no issues with my Wi-Fi and the airplay works perfectly. I must say that I don't use Bluetooth for any reason other then a big blue audio speaker for watching Netflix or iTunes video purchases. And I do not use AirDrop. I think these people who are using Bluetooth and AirDrop and Apple TVs on Wi-Fi are having problems. I think they should disconnect the AppleTV if they have one or connected it to an Internet cable and see if this fixes the problem as well as turn off the Bluetooth on their iPhone and AirDrop. Even though I figured out how to sync 1080 P videos into my Apple devices using iTunes on my laptop. My Apple TV will not except the 1080 P download it only wants the 720 P file from my iPhone or iPad. AppleTV can download the file from the Internet or your Apple product if it is stored in the device. I have told Apple about this even though it is a third-generation 1080 P AppleTV. However by default all Apple devices still receive the 720 P file on Wi-Fi. The only way to install the full 1080 P file is to sync the file from a laptop In your Apple product..... Starting with the iPhone 4s... Tech specs show H.264 1080P 30 frames per second supported on the iPhone 4s and all models after... Including iPads and iPods... Some of you need to check this out.

YYeah, I do plug via Ethernet to Apple TV. But I guess the airport express is causing the AWDL bug to manifest itself. But I have no other way of connecting other than latching onto wifi. It's primarily used to connect into our Hifi so we can stream to its speakers. The position as such makes Ethernet unpractical. I think it's pretty clear that AWDL is a big issue. It's not the only issue causing wifi drops but it's one of many major glitches. Apple need to address it, I don't understand why they don't regress the code for wifi back to what we had in ios 7. new features are great and all that but not when core stuff breaks and remains unfixed. I couldn't care less about health apps, apple pay or the watch features when something as important as wifi, AirPlay, Bluetooth is passed over.

Why can't you use a cable? I have 2 Apple tvs hooked up by cable over 25 feet... Check radio shack they just signed bankruptcy recently. Get whatever cable length you need. 50 or 100 feet if you need it. This will remove the problem.

I Wish I could but the wife won't allow cables being run all over the house. I might try a home plug solution. trouble is I already have one of those serving a smart TV. I do appreciate the suggestion but I wish apple would just first acknowledge the AWDL bug (at least that'll be somethin) and then one day address it!

Maybe tape it? I have 100 foot cables that I had to run through my house for security cameras. So I drilled a small hole where I pull the carpet back and ran the cable into the basement. Then pull the carpet a little forward where the TV is and run the cable up to the TV. I use this method to run it into the basement and then out to the corners of the house. Even ran two cameras out of the garage and then up into the upper part of the garage and then out to the corners of the house over the drywall of the garage. So I can mount the cameras between the gutter and the siding. All the extra cable is just laying up on top of the drywall in my garage. There is a way to do it if you get inventive. You can tell her if you won't let me run the cable and tape it then I'm going to have to drill a small hole and run it somewhere. If you can't drill a hole then I would maybes find a way to run it up along the wall over your head. If you get a long enough cord you can simply just as you go down the hallway run it over the top of the door and down the other side and continue down the hallway so you don't have to go in front of the door so people have to step over a cord. Just tuck it in all the way along the side and tape it in a few spots. Find a way...

Run the cables through the air ducts, if you have them.

There a flat cables for running under carpet.

    http://www.amazon.com/Cables-Unlimited-UTP-1800-50W-UltraFlat-Patch/dp/B0007QQJX 4

My attic is filled with cables -- electrical, telephone, & tv.  They are up two stories then down.

IIt amazes me how much time, effort and money folks are willing to pour into their devices just to get some sort of makeshift function out of them. I've got no gripe with apple, my ipad functions as it was designed, but then again I never upgraded from ios7. If I had even a fraction of the issues that I see posted on this site I would be using it as a target at the shooting range in a heartbeat. There is so much better on the market these days at a fraction if the cost, I just don't see the sense here..

“Tell me in all honesty you didn't jailbreak your device. If that's the case there is nothing anyone here can do to help you.”

No, I did not jailbreak my device.

“You would be well suited to do as a long list of other posters here have done. Purchase a new Apple Air Port Extreme, get a new Ipad and when all else fails, press two buttons at the same time and be a happy camper with the results.”

Purchasing a new Apple Air Port Extreme will not fix this problem while connecting to WIFI on a network other than my own.  This includes but is not limited to coffee shops, hotels, and my phone as a hotspot.  Also why should the customer be required to replace hardware(networking gear and/or the iPad itself)when it was a software update from Apple that broke the Apple device?  The updates were available so I installed them.  The hardware may be out of warranty but they’re still giving me software updates so in a way it’s still supported.

“As far as your claim that Apple should somehow be responsible for breaking your device, well I'm sure you recall sections 7.4-7.6 of the terms and conditions that you read prior to updating.  Apple is not responsible for damages to your Ipad as a result of installing the operating system and it is You that is responsible for any costs of repairs. So let me reiterate, Apple is not responsible.”

Just because something is in writing and you agree to it does not necessary mean it’s legally binding.  If the hardware was made by Apple and a software update provided by Apple was installed on hardware that meets their requirements and it breaks the device there is a possibility that Apple in fact is responsible as the consumer did not do anything as in jailbreak or modify the hardware and/or software provided by Apple.  Maybe what you say should be more public so that consumers will know Apple does not care about them because in their agreements if they brick your device you are required to buy a new $500 device.  Would that be better?  No.  All we want is a fix for something that they broke without any out of pocket expenses due to no fault of our own.  If you take your car into the only shop in all of the world that services your car where they have an agreement stating if they break something they won’t be responsible would it hold up in court as that is the ONLY place that can do ANY work?

It also brings up ethical and moral issues.  Why would consumers want to deal with a company that knowingly and willingly will not admit fault or take responsibility for their actions if they say yea, we bricked your device or removed functionality that was there before but hey, just buy a new one from us.  They need to take responsibility for what they caused and in a timely fashion.  These reports have been going on for at least 5 months now and as of today there hasn't been a fix to any of our problems.  The posts in this forums are only from people who:

    1-Notice a problem.

2-Know to discuss it on the Apple forum.

If you find other websites talking about this issue there are others posting on those sites with the same problems.  If there truly was not an issue then Apple would not be reaching out to people here having them install WIFI loggers and/or answer questions about when they see this problem.   Right there is a non verbal sign there is a problem.  We just want reliable WIFI with the functionality we had before.  It's not asking a lot.

Didn't something similar happen with iPhone 4 following a new IOS? Various people's phones became unusable - and Apple refused to take any responsibility?

Well maybe we need to purchase a new device every year (or less) to keep up with their technology - never mind you've spent hundreds, just throw the od one away and start again

Remember as has been commented by the Apple devotees on here "you can't expect things to last forever". Maybe not, but I would have hoped that something I spend a considerable amount on will last more than a year or 2

Saw on the news that the Apple watch will be launched today - wonder how long that will last

Lucky I'd read all the comments on here!

My brother is having problems with his iPhone 5, out of warranty & keeps losing wifi signal. He went to the Apple store & they told him if he upgraded to an iPhone 6 it would solve it

Fortunately he didn't as I expect he would have wasted his money

My iPad is a 3rd generation made in early 2012 Model: A1416.

Now that you mention it I don't think the Apple tech even asked what kind of model I had.  I think there was more of a focus on everything outside of the Apple device.

Well there you are, it's over 2 years old so completely obsolete.

What do you expect trying to use dated technology, you need to go & buy a new one
