Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

Yea, I guess you're right.  I might also have to throw away a few other things like my perfectly good 64GB third generation iPod touch since I can't go higher than IOS 6.1.6 on it (music works fine and so does Spotify) and maybe even my step-son's 5th generation iPod running IOS 7.1(scared to install the IOS 8.1.3 update as it could break that device).  Heck I don't even know how my iPad and iPod are working as they don't have the new and improved lightning cables.  I was expecting them to self-destruct when the lightning cable was released.

It's as simple as this.  If a software manufacturer puts out an updated for a device that they support it should be supported.  By Apple updating my 3rd generation iPad it shows that it is a supported device.  They need to support the software updates that broke my device.   Users expect updates from X amount of years after buying hardware.  If a manufacturer makes the support too short people won't buy it because it will be obsolete very soon.  If manufacturers make the support too long then they are dealing with legacy devices and that could hold back the development of better technologies.

I just want to be able to use Bluetooth AND have faster than dial up speeds over WIFI at the same time.  It's pretty simple.  I would have much more respect for Apple if they came out and said yup, there is a problem.  We're working on it and expect an ETA of (insert date here) but it's the complete opposite.  I feel like they're just waiting for the people where their software update broke their devices to be quiet and go out and buy another iPad, iPod, iPhone, whatever because they don't want to deal with the minority of people having problems.  They want to focus on newer devices and the iWatch but like I said if a manufacturer puts out a software update for a device then that shows they support it and I feel they are not supporting my device.

No you don't I have an iPod touch third generation and it works fine. All you need to do is get the Apple TV hooked in with the cable. You need to run the cable into the basement and then run it back upstairs make a couple small holes. Just pull the carpet back a little bit and then drove a small hole in the floor and then push the carpet back to the wall. You can hide all of the cable in the basement. All of your other equipment is working fine it was just when you hook this AppleTV into the network. Once I hooked it with a Internet cable all the problems went away. I have an iPhone 2.... Or the second iPhone released. It's an old AT&T phone that I use as an iPod. Battery still works like the day it came out of the box. My dad upgraded from AT&T to Verizon he gave it to me and I use it as an iPod. I just turned it on airplane mode and turn the Wi-Fi back on so I don't have the Cellular transmitters turned on. it works just fine on my network as long as I leave my Apple TV connected to the cable. See you need to figure out how to get your Devices connected with Internet cable. Make it happen.

This is more to vent my frustration then any useful input. I live in the UK countryside and dont yet have fibre, so I live off a copper link that can do 8mbs, Its fine or least it has been for 5 years. I work from home, and at home there is is normally at least 1 to 3 laptops and 1 to 4 phones connected to the wifi. Four phones, are an 2x iphone 4, iphone 6, one android (mine). My daughter also uses a macbook. We all have used this connection fine. My other daughter also had a ipad 1 which she used all the time. All good. no problems, apps update, windows laptops update, macbook plays music, youtube vids.iplayer, do work, email, browse, all at the same time.

But then came the ipad 3 mini. And it took away our internet and created such friction. I know its the mini because, I have 3 wifi routers in the house, connected to the same ADSL router,  I am wired to the router with my desktop but the other devices connect to one of other wifi. The iPad mini as it is only connected to the mid house wifi router, and spends all its time trying to burn out the "I'm doing stuff" LED on the router. In otherwords, it is one it is using all the **!&£! bandwidth in the house so no one else can do anything. Bandwidth costs money, I pay for it, and the mini iPad is taking all it away so the rest of us cannot work, or do anything.

So I on the mini, I turn off the icloud, sign out of app store. I turn of background app updates, I turn off ... pretty much everything. And it still uses up the bandwidth even when the lock screen is displayed. I buy a switch with a VIP port and put my machine on it and the wifi on the other ports, and it still takes all the bandwidth, What the heck is it doing!!!!!. We dont all have 1gb fibre google networks.

Okay someone well tell me its some app downloading ads, or the icloud pulling the itunes music, or the backup to icloud, or an update to the mini but these are all off, when it is doing this. So I am at a lose as to what to do, except disconnect it anytime I need to do any work.

If there is a solution, or a QoS setting or something to stop it. I will have to take it back PDQ.

Did you put it in airplane mode?  Did the problem with the router go away?

Try turning off Airdrop, airplay, and bluetooth.  Problem should go away.

    What happens when you reboot?

    Re-boot ipad.

Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until a red slider appears, then drag the slider. Then press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.  page 128 iPad user manual.

force power down if the above give you trouble.

Hold down both the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button. Ten seconds or more.  Hold until the Apple logo appears.

On the mini - no apps are running, no update is updating, background app updates are turned off, siri is turned off, backup is turned off, icloud is turned off, app store is signed out. Pretty much everything I could find which involves the internet is turned of. But as soon as I turn the wifi back on the mini, the pings from my desktop machine out to the internet slow down by x100, and the wifi router starts flashing like mad.

iPad mini 3 wifi on (no apps running, and so on)

This pinging a speedtest server which is 20km away. It basically means, a simple network request from my desktop machine is slowed down by a factor of x100, and takes 1/4 of a second to complete. Making most internet related activities slower then dial-up.

This problem did not occur with the iPad 1. Since all apps are not running and backups, updates and icloud are disabled I can only assume there is something in the iOS which is hitting the wifi, and pulling data. Turning the ipad off and on resolves the issue but only temporary then it starts hitting the router again.

Try and change the DNS in the wifi... This may or may no help.. Use it for all your Apple products... Google fiber IPv6 DNS

    2607:f8b0:4004:802::1011

Use that DNS in the wifi you are signed into On your iPad and iPhones.. Everything... Touch the blue i on the right of the network you are connected on.. Delete DNS line and replace with number above.. Should help your devices that are having trouble. Even if you don't have IPv6... Only ipv4.... Use it...

    Did you try?

Try turning off Airdrop, airplay, and bluetooth.  Problem may/most likely will go away.

It's with 8.x. Ipad 1 cannot run 8.x, so no problem. Don't have to turn off all that stuff.

I may be one of the few that can report success in getting improved wifi.  From all of the posts, the problems are random and who gets the problem is completely  random. very little in common other than lost connection that requires turning wifi off and on to get a minute or two of undisturbed connection. I did some strange combination  of turning items off then back on. Like an easter egg, I somehow found the wifi power switch. The items I turned off: Bluetooth, Data roaming, personal hotspot, Enable LTE and my WiFi (and even went to airplane mode once).  I turned Bluetooth and wifi back on every time (the phone is a brick for me without). After some odd combination, both my iPhone 5 and my wife's iPhone 5 now work well at home. NOTE: buying a new router does NOT work. I suspected an older router had given up the ghost and bought a Netgear AC3250; did not help.

I don't remember re-enabling LTE coverage, but it is back on and hasn't effected performance. So all that remains "off" are Data Roaming and Personal Hotspot. It may not help those with Airplay issues, but for iPhone users, some magic, random combination may get you working again. I haven't had to turn off my Wifi and restart for almost a month. No lockups, no loss of connection. It took me an extra day of on/off with the spouse's phone....no complaints of "the blasted thing is locked up again". Never played with DNS, IP address, router settings, etc.  Some of you may get lucky. It's depressing that Apple has let this linger so long. Good luck to all and may the trolls keep off your page.

Some of us are not lucky enough to live in an area with Google fiber or have an isp thet supports ip6. I had a stable iPad for a solid week now it is back to disconnecting all the time. Apple need to stop *****^g about on overpriced status symbols and pay attention to existing devices. FIX YOUR F*****G OS!

I just want to be able to watch Netflix without having to reconnect every 30 seconds.

    yes I have Bluetooth disabled

yes i have static ip address

    yes I have static dns

    yes I have airdrop disabled

    yes I am annoyed

they know about this as I have had 2 Apple employees email me asking for logs and I have sent them to them numbers times.

    • Fixes an issue where duplicate iTunes purchased content could prevent iCloud restore from completing
    • Resolves an issue where some music or playlists didn’t sync from iTunes to the Music app
    • Fixes an issue where deleted audiobooks sometimes remained on device
    • Resolves an issue that could prevent call audio from routing to car speakers while using Siri Eyes Free
    • Fixes a Bluetooth calling issue where no audio is heard until the call is answered
    • Fixes a time zone issue where Calendar events appear in GMT
    • Addresses an issue that caused certain events in a custom recurring meeting to drop from an Exchange calendar
    • Fixes a certificate error that prevented configuring an Exchange account behind a third-party gateway
    • Fixes an issue that could cause an organiser’s Exchange meeting notes to be overwritten
    • Resolves an issue that prevented some Calendar events from automatically showing as 'Busy' after accepting an invite

So Apple have managed to address many issues - but nothing about wi-fi

I've updated on both my ipad & iphone, still getting wi-fi dropping out!

Just waiting for August when my phone contract runs out to I can change to a different (NOT Apple) device. I'm sure Apple couldn't care about individual users as there making zillions from those who queue overnight to but the latest offerings (no doubt the same people who would refuse to admit Apple could do anything wrong)

IT doesn't matter. You don't need ipv6. stop making assumptions.... Insert this on your DNS line.

    Google fiber ipv6 DNS....   2607:f8b0:4004:802::1011

    on all Apple products...
