Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

Same thing for you... IPv6 service don't matter.. I don't have IPv6. Yet it helps the performance. Others have posted it helped also... Try it or shut up about it.. You don't know what you're talking about... Test it... Then post and run your mouth... Because then you will have tested it and KNOW what you're talking about... I can't help people get off stupid... If you are only wait for a iOS update to fix it... Then shut up... If you want help.. Test people's IDEAS!!! It's called science... Observation by experimentation... Use it then comment it helped or not... Or if not... Shut up.. It helps... Stop making assumptions... You know what it makes you... Just read the first three letters of that word...

Thank you for the proof Apple.. You emailed me proof you deleted my post.. The newspaper I contacted about it wanted proof you are deleting posts... So now I have it... Thank you...  So you know what I'm doing... I'm forwarding your email to the newspaper... As proof you delet posts...  I said no bad words in the post. Yet you don't like what I posted...

as for you salt... I Don't have IPv6 also. Use it.. It helps.. Just trust me.. If you don't like it. Delete it and your old DNS will show up again when you back out one screen... Just try it... It takes 30 seconds... What do you have to lose?? If it helps... What do you gain????

No noticeable???? Speed difference.. I have installed this on hundreds of iPhones... EVERY user has told me it helped... Those who didnt make assumptions and tried it... And they noticed a difference... You just dont have the integrity to say it helped do you? Because you have been yelling it's wrong and don't work and you can t see how it could help.... For you to now jump on and say it helped ... It's one of these foot in the mouth moments you just don't have something called integrity to admit...  Or your post would have jumped on me for it not working and how you used it like ipad said and it didn't work... You sure can post long posts when you don't know what you don't test...

THanks for this advice, I tried it and it does seem to make a noticeable difference so far. I plugged the number into my apple airport extreme and in my network settings on my mini mac. I'm hoping it stays helping since most "fixes" peter out but what the heck, nothing ventured nothing gained and it's better :-)

Not a problem.. Text it to your friends.. post it however you can. Let others know. Just save it for all your wifi locations. you need to replace the slow DNS.. And any new wifi you sign into. Hope others read your post before telling me they don't see how it can help then don't try it and complain. Can't hurt right! Only takes a few minutes...

    My story.

I installed 8.2 on my iPad yesterday.  I've been using it and it seems better but then again it could take a few days for my slowness to appear.  Before 8.2 I could not turn on Bluetooth and get above dial up speeds.  With bluetooth enabled I was getting about .25Mbps down and up.

Yesterday and today after installing 8.2 I can have bluetooth on and get broadband speeds BUT.................................when I connect bluetooth to an external speaker streaming video starts to go to a lower quality and starts buffering and will quit in about 25-45 seconds.  It's almost like my iPad just can't keep up two wireless things at the same time.

Like I said better but not fixed.

Did you try DNS I suggested? One thing I must say is when I update iOS i never have Bluetooth or airdrop on... Only wifi and LTE.. I close all apps... Fresh restart... turn screen auto lock to never so update is not interrupted... I get over 100 Mbps bursts every time on download and I only pay for 50 Mbps On my iPhone 6 plus... On Netgear r6300 using fastest IPv4 DNS from DNS benchmark in my router and wifi and Google ipv6 in my Apple devices...

    Google ipv6 DNS....   2607:f8b0:4004:802::1011

no issues with my big blue audio Bluetooth speaker... Works great.. Speed tests show no problems... Bursts over 100 Mbps then falls to about 55-60 Mbps

I tried adding the IP6 DNS for Google and no change.  Exactly 25 seconds after turning on my bluetooth speaker where the audio got transfered to it I start to have problems and issues.  Poor video quality, buffering, and stalling.  Oh well thanks anyway.

You need to try DNS benchmark on your laptop for your router and wifi DNS... This will allow you to scan hundreds or thousands of DNS servers... Set the two fastest in your wifi and provider router... Make them the same.. Then use IPv6 and see how it works.. Get your system off the default DNS... on ALL devices... You can't have router one DNS and wifi another it slows it down... Then use IPv6 on iPhone or iPad Or iPod...

DNS should not effect how fast data travels over WIFI and/or how fast a device can process a continuous data stream.  DNS should not also effect speed if the bluetooth radio is on or not also.  I think what is happening to my device has nothing to do with DNS.  Also I am not dropping WIFI as some are.  I think there is a wide spectrum of problems but we can all agree they involve WIFI speed/connectivity and started cropping up with IOS8 came out.

So you have no issue when you have bluetooth off? Try turning off Bluetooth.. Also airdrop if it's on. Restart everything. iPhone... Wifi and router... Others have posted turning them on and off in diff combinations fixed it... the only time I EVER had wifi issues was when I hooked a 3rd gen Apple TV into wifi.. The entire network when all over the place... Lost AirPlay A dozen times. button shows up... Button goes away... Slow internet speeds when I have the fastest I can pay for 50 Mbps DL and 5 Mbps UPL.... Once I hooked it to a internet cable... I tried both wifi channels on the Apple TV.. Nothing worked until I hooked in the cable... In ten seconds.... BAM... All is good.. No issues... i have never had any wifi issues like dropping or failure to connect... ect...

Like I said I pay for 50 Mbps DL and 5 Mbps Upload... Here is a screen shot from my iPhone 6 plus using a app called cloudcheck. iphone only app so you need to hit search twice from iPad to find setting for iPhone apps..

Anyone else think it don't work?

Here is speedtest app I'm in Ohio. Sending test to Chicago as you can see on bottom. Look below speedtest see the burst over the flat 55 I got got the test? See how the graph grows to a high peek then falls to the flatline of the end yes results. Still higher then the 50 DL I pay for and burst is hard to see in upload but is there...
