Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

Hi  could you please explain what exactly you are bringing to this discussion in relation to the topic of "ios8 wi- fi problems"? When people correctly state that changing DNS settings doesn't fix their drop out problems you appear to get all agitated, defensive and frankly abusive. The point is those with wifi connectivity issues still have those issues after the 8.2 upgrade, and any amount of fiddling with DNS is not going to resolve that. The problem has been around since the first ios 8 upgrade, was not there in ios 7, and the cause has been identified and documented ( see the Forbes article for further reference) . Apple have neither formally acknowledged this bug exists nor fixed it, but as many have stated they are well aware as Apple have contacted a large number of posters to provide details, logs etc.

I don't know why you keep saying DNS is the issue when others have tried your suggestions with no luck.  It may have fixed it in your case but it is not fixing it in our cases.  DNS is used to convert a domain name/URL to an IP.  That's all.  It has NOTHING to do with how fast the data comes down or how fast a device processes the data.  All I know is I was getting about 18Meg down when bluetooth was off with 8.1.x and about .25Meg down when bluetooth was on. With IOS 8.2 I'm gettig about 18Meg down with bluetooth on (for now) but once I turn on my bluetooth speakers I start having bandwidth issues 25 seconds after doing so.  Tell me how my DNS server has anything to do with WIFI ONLY when I'm using an external bluetooth speaker?

You can show speedtests all you want but DNS is used to resolve one of tespeedtest servers to an IP address and after that DNS isn't used.

I left a few posts on DNS benchmark speedtest from your laptop and using IPv6 in your Apple devices and what to do .. Few pages ago. Restart all devices and router and wifi with new settings... Test it... i said it helps PERFORMANCE.... Did I say it stops it from dropping off? I don't have that problem... Only Applt TV on my wifi network messed it all up... Cord fixed it all...

A Few pages back a few guys said it helped... So try it then post it don't work.. Then you'll know what you're talking about if it helps with performance or not... Science is experimentation and oberservation... Ask questions and know what's going on... Or stand there and think you know what's going on... what one are you? Test ... Then ask me questions how it works...

With your DNS settings on IOS8 and bluetooth on streaming music from Spotify:

Audio from internal speaker 8Meg down

Audio from external bluetooth speaker .33Meg down  (notice how the first character is a dot)

    Audio from internalspeaker 8Meg down

It's like the OS is slowing down with WIFI and Bluetooth transfering data at the same time to a point where WIFI is getting the lowest priority thus killing the speed, at least my iPad.

It does not appear to be a DNS issue.  If it was then I would have problem on WIFI with bluetooth on, off, connected, an disconnected.

Then stop using Bluetooth for a while... Try different Bluetooth speaker... Something bluetooth is messing it up then... Im using Bluetooth. Just post two pic of speedtest on my iPhone. Look a page or so back. Maybe you missed it... I was just trying to help... I don't have issues. Never have. Other than when I hooked 3rd gen Apple TV into network. Then network was all over the place... Slow speeds. Slow to connect when I got home. Once cable on Apple TV was installed... ALL issues gone again... Back to normal. Sorry all of you have problems... Same problems I'm having with Apple... I discovered from the release of the iPhone 4s and other Apple products... All Apple users receive 720p file over wifi. Yet you can sync the 1080 p file into the device from a laptop using iTunes. 720p file must be deleted so laptop only has 1080p file to use a s sync. Change preferences to 1080p download to laptop for default setting of 720p.... This must be done first... Delete 720p if installed... Or install 108p file... Once download completed... Sync 1080p file with iPhone 4s/5/5s/6/6 plus and iPads and iPods after release of iPhone 4s... Look for tech spec page... H.264 1080p 30 frames per second supported... Apple has over a 3 year old secret.... I have told and reported this the the news... Emailed a few of them... Tell your friends...

Im going to say this one last time... I didn't say its a DNS issue... Or this is a FIX... I said this is the best DNS to use in Apple products because it IPv6!!!  Read the post...  I don't know why myself why it works so well. If I remove it... My network is still good but the burst and performance is gone.... It helps Performance.... If you have issues or NOT!!  DO YOU GET ME? if you didn't follow all my directions... I can't help you when you say it don't work... Others just posted it did a few pages ago.... Go check it out...

I love apple and have over ten devices in my family. This thread explains exactly why I work on a PC all day.  For work, we just can't handle these issues.

OW really? Im posting now using my ipad mini... I posted before from my iphone 6 plus and my laptop... So Whats your point? Something messed up some of these users settings... Some will try ideas they understand. Some will try ones they dont.... Others stand there and stomp their feet on the ground compaining they dont understand how someone's idea could work... Before testing it or not ever test. Then they open their little comment holes and let the stupidity start posting....  My reply was case in point hu??

Agreed the main problem is wi-fi dropping out - but (certainly for me) changing the DNS has improved download by at least 10%. This means files & pages load quicker so it does help by reducing time & there's more chance of a download completing before I have to reset yet again

Something to check as well, I tried upgrading to 8.2, hasn't made any difference to wi-fi but speed seemed to drop. When I checked the DNS settings had reverted to defaults so needed to update again

If changing DNS speeds up the internet that means earlier you used BAD DNS. DNS has nothing to do with WiFi problems (the topic of this thread).

I use both Google DNS and OpenDNS - both very popular and well-tested - very fast and very reliable DNS services.

And still I have WiFi issues. (I dont have speed issues)

So please stop abusing people and calling them fool or stupid.

Please discuss only WiFi problems here and please create a new thread for DNS issue / tips / ideas etc. As that would be right place for it.

    Thank you.

PS: no offence to anyone and expecting a polite reply only.

Just for giggles and to prove a point to myself I put in the IPv6 dns and took out all IPv4 DNS addresses and wow no name resolution.

I Remember when Bluetooth and wifi first became common there was interference between the 2 as they used a similar frequency or something like that. I can't really remember as it was a while ago.

IIt must be a driver issue for the wireless card that is at fault as like everyone has said it worked in ios7.  Same with the "speed" issue.  If the wifi has some sort of interference that will slow down the connection.

Saw an interesting comment in the reviews of new Apple watch:-

"Apple will unquestionably sell millions of these watches because there's pent-up demand from the loyal super-fans who will buy almost any Apple product,"

This site will not allow the link, but go on BBC & search for Apple watch (on 9th March at 22.18)

So all the time these super-fans queue overnight to be first in line to pay for the latest offering, whether or not it provides an real benefit, and be so blinkered they refuse to admit if there is something that doesn't work. Never mind, Apple's profits will continue to grow and they can continue their arrogance towards anyone who doesn't think they're perfect.

This is demonstrated by their censorship of comments (I fully expect this to be deleted so keep copies of the e-mail to prove it happened)

At least it's only 5 months until I'm due an upgrade, unless Apple can sort things out I will be getting a Windows or Android device. For the acolytes that's probably good, as there will be one less to criticise their idol

Never said remove all IPv4. Your router and wifi will need that.. but your iPhone can still use it... Helps me and others.  Follow my directions from other post... DNS benchmark on laptop. Input 2 fastest DNS into both router and wifi if you have them... Imput IPv6 into iphone.

Riddick do you work in IT? just curious  because without an ipv6 ip address and a router that can pass IPv6 ip addresses the ipv6 DNS is as usefull as a chocolate fire-guard.

HHahahaha don't try it... Make all the assumptions you want... I guess you will just wait for a iOS update... You are not here to try any ideas... Ones that help performance... Don't test it... you don't deserve the knowledge... Science is experimentation and observation. From all your rants.. I'm guessing you don't test it.... I'm guessing you didn't follow all my directions or none at all. Then jump in and you don't understand how it can work ... Well others posted a few pages ago from others... They say it helps... But unlike you... They didn't make assumptions... Then tested it... So then they would know what they are talking about... It's called integrity... Get some.
