Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

    no i agree with you

what i was saying is that bluetooth and wifi used to conflict with each other as they used the same 2.4ghz  i am not dissing you as i can understand the issue that you are having. what i am saying is apple must have written something in the driver or forgot to put something in the driver to fix this issue.

the issue with the interference should have been fixed in earlier standards of the wifi  but it looks like it is back.  either they changed the bluetooth or the wifi.

i changed the IDof the wifi to "WIFINAME"

it looks like for some reason the iDevice blacklists your wifi hence the drop and why you then need to tuen off the wifi

I still think Apple changed something in IOS8 and I posted that video to show others what I'M seeing with IOS 8.2 and to show what I was seeing with IOS 8.1.3 showing the slowdown when bluetooth was just on.  We do know with IOS Apple did make some changes to how it interacts with other Apple devices over the air.  Maybe on some devices it's causing a problem.

Yea, the game of life.  Good game!

I'm seeing similar things in my logs but I show it for all the networks I've been on.  I'm really not sure how much faith I'd put into those logs since I"m not familiar with them.

Alex where were you directed to find these logs?  Is there an article anywhere?  I went from a Cisco router to an Apple Airport Extreme and the logging or lack there of is abysmal on the Apple routers.

    Thx

Called Apple Support today again about this problem.  They are completely mum about the issue and act as if they've never heard a peep about the situation.  Not too long ago I replaced my router at their insistence.  Didn't solve the problem, but I was out another $300.  Had this issue before with my iPad (which was finally fixed by an update a couple of years ago).  Now the iPad works flawlessly, but the brand new iPhone is basically a brick.

Clicked on the link at the top of this thread "branched to a new discussion" --> "Access to this place or discussion is restricted...."

    So much for transparency....

The 'branched to a new discussion link" is moderators only, it's where irrelevant, offensive or plain old insulting posts go.

Making sure I'm clear: You bought a replacement router, it didn't work but you didn't retturn it so you're out $300.00? You had this problem a couple of years ago - pre iOS 8.x?  You haven't returned a "brand new" iPhone (under warranty) that didn't work?

Oh, the new router worked just fine with everything but the iPhone, but it wasn't returnable (since it wasn't defective).  The problem that wasn't fixed was the iPhone's periodic inability to connect to my Wi Fi.  Perhaps I should take up your suggestion and just return the iPhone; however, since Apple was finally able to fix the same problem I had with the iPad on my old router (via an OS update), I'm hoping the same will happen with our iPhones.  Frustrating that Apple hasn't really acknowledged the problem, or made any headway figuring out a fix.

Thanks.  In other forums I frequent a note is entered in the thread "moved to snippiness" and the post is moved, but allowed to be viewed in the Snippiness thread.  This is a bit more cryptic (and confusing to us newbies who are fighting Wi Fi issues at the same time).  ??Change to something like "Snippy or irrelevant posts moved to a branched discussion (moderator access only)".??

    Apple,

If I fork over extra money to have your products, I expect it to work... NO QUESTION!

If this really is a scheme to force people to buy upgrades, your credibility is seriously going to cause people to take two looks before buying something in the future.

People put you in a successful position because they trust you.  It has been 5 months now!  Please fix this!

You might want to actually tell that to Apple, rather than other Apple users.

Apple seem to be pulling posts like Soft Mick. I had another "foaming at the mouth" piece in my in-box saying under no circumstance can it be Apple's fault and we must all keep buying new routers until the issue is fixed.

    i'm not a techie but I know a bit:

    ipad 2 + IOS7 = no issues

    ipad 2 + IOS8 = big wifi connectivity issues

No change in router, router settings or respective locations.

The issue is purely an IOS8 one and lies at Apple's door to fix (and, truth be known, they could fix things without spending a h'penny, let people revert back to IOS7).

    Hi All,

This thread is very long and overwhelming. I was hoping someone could offer me some quick advice - We have 2 ipad Minis, an iPhone 5s, and 2 MBPs (all running most recent operating systems and updates) in my house that all have no problem connecting and staying connected to our home Wifi. My husband had an iPhone 5 (which also had no issues with wifi) and in the end of December upgraded to an iPhone 6 Plus.  We just became aware of the fact that his new 6 plus is constantly disconnecting from wifi.  We had been going over our data usage plans for a couple of months, and just figured out this is probably why.  We have tried "reset network settings" and that only seems to fix the problem for an hour or two. I plan on calling apple customer support in the morning to see what they have to say, but does anyone have any advice? I see some people here are suggesting its a problem with the router, but I just don't think that makes sense since all of our other devices have worked and continue to work without issues. Thanks in advance for any input.

You cannot suggest that the problem could be with an Apple device, don't you know they never go wrong

It MUST be your router, so go out immediately and buy a replacement
