Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

Is it an iPhone 4 or 4S? The iPhone 4 cannot be upgraded to IOS8 so if somehow you've done that it could be the reason for problem

Maybe my wife and I have been just really lucky, but since October of 2014 we have bought 2 iPhone 6 +. 2 iPad Air 2, and just recently an iPad Mini 2 and an iPod Touch 5th Generation.  All of the devices were updated at least once (all are running 8.2).  We have had zero wi-fi problems (and no Bluetooth problems either) since buying each device.  The only thing I do is set up each IOS device as a new device.  It is a royal pain to set up mail and download apps for each device and set up usernames and passwords but I have always been a proponent of clean installs as I will even do a clean install with each new version of OS X on our 2008 iMac and our 2011 MacBook Air, both running the latest Yosemite update (we have two bootable hard drives where I add photos and iTunes music and videos and overlay the latest version of OS X).  iTunes music is the only thing I add to our iMac and MacBook Air.

I'm a long time Apple user, three generations of iPhone and two generations if the iPad, so I'm not some newbie when it comes to these devices.

I just upgraded to IOS 8.2 on my iPhone 5S and my iPad Air.  Now my iPad will not connect to my WiFi network, my iPhone does connect.  Oh and get this, even thought I have teathering turned OFF on my iPhone, it still shows up on my iPad in the list of WiFi connections ... this is nuts.

Nothing has changed on my WiFi network, I did reboot both my WAPs (wireless access points).  I reset the iPad and reset networking settings to default.  When the iPad tries to connect to the WiFi network, I get a message saying the password is incorrect.  The password is NOT INCORRECT, it's been the same password for over a year and my iPhone is connecting using you guessed it ... the same password.

I'm so sick and tired of all the garbage surrounding IOS 8 with a half dozen updates in as many months.  So much for Apple's "it just works", and Apple has the gall to mock Microsoft for their Windows updates ... arrogance.  I have never had so much trouble with IOS as I have experienced over the past six months.  Apple is out of control, what about getting back to the razor shop focus that prevailed under Jobs' dictatorship.

I don't mind the updates. As long as they don't break stuff! To be honest I'm kicking myself that I upgraded this phone to iOS 8. I usually hold off for as long as possible. But since iOS 8 has been perfectly fine on my own iPhone 5 & decided to 'fix up' my wife's phone as well (which I think we all now agree on is actually an iPhone 4S, not a 4, which it appears is obsolete as far as iOS 8 is concerned). Would be good if we at least had the option to roll back an iOS easily. I'm not even sure it's possible to do this is it?

I also have problems connecting to the internet using safari browser on my ipad after updating   I did the settings-general-reset-reset- network settings and downloaded the puffin browser and i am now able to connect to the internet with my wifi. Thank you for the help! I Really hope apple fixes this bug. This is the second time I have had major problems after updating. My Last problem was after updating a past version of itunes. It took 3 hours to fix it.

I shouldn't have to jailbreak my phone to resolve a very important issue.

Is there a way to turn off AWDL without jailbreaking my phone?

    Hey guys.

    I'm still working on 7.1.2. (IPhone 5S).

I was lucky enogh to downgrade in time.

Now I am thinking to upload IOS 8.2., but it looks it doesn't resolve the problem.

Is there anyone who had a problems with IOS 8.XX, did an upgrade to 8.2. and fixed his (her) issue?

Mentioned I would report back after updating three iOS devices to iOS 8.2 from 8.1.3.  An iPhone 5c, a 3d gen iPad and my personal 6+.  I did and...they all work as expected. Still no "wi-fried" symptoms... Typing this on the 6+ - on wI-fI at home.

Interesting that someone else appears to have suspicions of "wi-fried sufferers" using multiple aliases here.  You can tell if you hang around long enough.  If it's true, you need to try a lot harder than you are.  Your posts though worded differently and under different aliases, all too often carry the same flow and theme:

    1) "iOS 8.x broke my device"

    2) "Apple needs to fix this"

    3) "My wife's works but mine (or my other device) doesn't"

    4) "I've tried everything but I'm not returning my waranted device"

    5) "I returned my device or bought a new router - still doesn't work"...

Do you really think people are that stupid?

    Hi Marian

I have just upgraded my old iPhone 4s to 8.2.  Since I upgraded my wifi is exhibiting many of the problems mentioned in this very long thread!  I have fiddled around, applying all the fixes suggested, to no avail.  Finally I took the drastic step of downgrading to 8.1.3 and now my wifi is back up and running in a usable fashion.  When I say a usable fashion, I mean in the range of a quarter to half the speed it should be, but at least it is now not disconnecting and using my cellular data, which was happening with my upgrade to 8.2.  So in reply to your question if I could go back to 7 I would in a heartbeat, 8.1.3 is the best I could do!  Stay where you are until they fix it

    David

I'm new on here so apologies if I don't know the format. Was searching for answers about problems I've been having and hope one of the experts can suggest a solution

I've got an iphone 5s and an ipad, both worked perfectly since purchase, but recently have both developed the same problem - for no reason the wi-fi will disconnect & the symbol disappears. If I search for wi-fi (my home hub) & select I'm asked for password. But when entering I get error that password is incorrect (even though it isn't). To get connected again I have to turn phone or ipad off & on again, it will then work for a while before repeating. This happens whatever I'm doing - on web, e-mail, using apps. It could be coincidence but it seems to have started after I loaded IOS8

Reading some comments it seems some have changed there routers, but I don't think that is the problem as it happens at home, at work (where they have top of the range routers), in Costa, in shopping malls (using the cloud). Initially it actually cost me as I didn't realise it was happening & phone would revert to 3G so I exceeded my data allowance - have now turned mobile data off on only turn on when I need to

Both devices are now out of warranty so I cannot get changed, whilst it might be that they both have developed faults I would like to check everything before spending on new kit

I have already tried some of the tips I found on this forum:-

    Turned off bluetooth
    Turned off airplay
Completely deleted iphone & restored from backup (haven't done for ipad yet)

An old ipod I have (still with IOS6) seems to be OK, and friends who have Android or Windows or Blackberrys never have any trouble

So - can someone please suggest something I can try, it's been going on for weeks & is driving me mad

    Hi wobbly_bob

This is the actual situation as it stands:-

For the benefit of anyone who can't wade through all the bickering to find the facts:-

The ios8.x wi-fi problem is a true bug and it is still present in ios8.2. Amongst other things it can manifest itself as poor wi-fi speeds, difficulty in connecting to a WAP, rejection of Wi-Fi passwords and very slow or no hand off in a cluster system or one with multiple WAPs. it can also cause poor airplay performance, no airplay and / or dropped airplay connexions. In some cases it can cause poor wi-fi performance on other equipment on the same wi-fi network as the ios device.

None of the 'fixs' talked about here work although they may seem to as forcing a reconnection will often appear to cure the wi-fi performance for a few minutes or even an hour or so in some circumstances but it the reconnection having a temporary effect not the 'fix'

Despite the naysayers this is a true bug in ios 8 and there are numerous threads and sites complaining about it all over the web. In recent weeks national newspapers have taken up the cause of users who have received huge cellular data bills due to the bug.

Personally I'm extremely disappointed in apple and have now given up and I am awaiting delivery of my new Android phone after having an iphone continuously since the launch or the first one. Why apple spend time messing with smiley faces when they have this sort of problem to deal with I don't know.
