Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

Thanks for the information - I had been looking at comments from the "level 8" users & thinking they must be experts & I must be doing something wrong

I presume there is no way I can put my devices back to IOS7 as that seemed to be OK?

Bob, never ask a question in a thread this long. Very few people who could answer your question ever even look at these threads.

One thing for sure, your problem has NOTHING to do with the WiFried article (which, by the way, is quite likely incorrect).

Regarding downgrading to iOS 7, downgrading iOS levels is not supported.

The ios8.x wi-fi problem is a true bug and it is still present in ios8.2.

I don't believe you know, please show us some evidence, your opinion is, as yet. speculative.

I Had the same problem on my iphone 3 on iOS 6.1.6  the phone was many years old and tumbled down several flights of stairs and other mishaps IT had wifi connection issues and most recently battery issues so I went up to the iPhone 5 now on ios 8. I had the problem with the 3 asking me to connects my home wifi constantly not accepting password and unable to connect I thought it was due to age and accidents I also had cellular data to fall back on so it was of no real concern. Now my 5 has the sim and no sim in my 3 ( battery issues resolved probably as not searching for network so kept it as a handy pocket tool while watching TV)  BUT BOTH PHONES are still having wifi issues but not always at the same time sometimes the 5 gets signal and 3 doesn't and visa versa so not the router ( which is a Thompson gateway and about 4 yo) not related to iOS 8 as still same issue with 6.1. I can say that the only way I can get them back is to force connection either by switching on-off airplane mode or cellular data OR rebooting the router or forgetting the wwifi network a lot of hassle but I imagine Apple is looking into it as they surely don't want a rotten apple spoiling the whole basket so us trying to fsolve the problem for them is unlikely but we can try to help with short term fixes for other frustrated users. my fixes work intermittently and more often than not the problem fixes itself in a few days usually when I have been out of the house and have just  been connected to another wifi   The problem is more frequent now though so I like most people out there have my THEORY though I'm not very tech savvy my brain still ticks and based on my problems. I think it could be time related to all Apple systems for whatever reason mane a common link an app, whatever, it started annoying me on IOS 6.1 maybe 6 or 8 months ago.  because you weren't experiencing it with ios7 means nothing as that may have been before the "problem ". It could now be a problem with all Apple operating systems but wasnt  say 8 months ago. i had the problem for a while and didn't get too concerned as I had the data to fall back on I'm only annoyed now because I have same problems on new phone others could be having problem and aren't getting concerned or even noticing because in most instances they have a sim and the data to back up their internet connection.  The problem is real just because everyone hasn't got it means nothing they just haven't got it YET.

I'm looking fwd to Apple solving the problem they've got more chance than us of doing it - all technology comes with hiccups

Your statement, "BOTH PHONES are still having wifi issues but not always at the same time sometimes the 5 gets signal and 3 doesn't and visa versa so not the router ( which is a Thompson gateway and about 4 yo)" does NOT rule out problems with the router.

Replacing that router would most likely solve your problem. It is either overloaded or starting to fail.

I Thought about replacing router due to its age but have also experienced problem at friends place they had relatively new router a Telstra branded one. That will however be my next step but I'm not overly confident.

I Haven't followed how long this issue has been troubling people the problem could be with routers all over the world, they are probably all  different brands and ages it seems more likely that the one thing in everyone seems to have in common is Apple devices. I haven't been checking to see if Samsung has the same issues (I think I might follow up on that) and why if the router is possibly the cause the household kindle and the asus laptop, which is crippled without wifi, have no problems? I'm not ruling out the router but these are valid questions you must admitt

I'm not sure about replacing my router - if I could be sure it would fix the problem I'd get a new one immediately, but the "drop out" happens at work, at friends, in cafes, anywhere. So it would be very strange if all the routers had developed the same bug at the same time

Together with people with other types of phone (Galaxy etc) do not have the problem makes me think it's on my phone. Now whether the phone has a fault (out of warranty) or is software related as suggested on here I just don't know and was hoping to get some pointers on here

I'm due for an upgrade in a couple of months. I was going to get an iphone 6, but am worried if it is a software bug then I would have the same problems

Just checked the Samsung phones and they too are having some issues with wi fi perhaps the routers aren't keeping up  and our phones are just TOO smart. But those who have commented about switching to android do your homework first.

I'll be waiting this one out for a while doing a bit more research before I spend any money on anything to fix something that nobody can seem to agree on.

Is there someone out there that has fixed the issue with a new router? What error messages did you get and what other devices did you have, if any, and how were they handling the wifi connection?

Welcome Bob - as you can see you're unlikely to get an answer

But if you are due for an upgrade, why not go for the iPhone 6 - then if you still have problems you can go back to Apple under warranty

And in the same link did you read further down??

The issue was resolved in 2 hours (yes just 2hrs). All they had to do is disable something.

And here for me I am still waiting for Apple to either tell me officially in the ticket I raised with them that "Hey its not our problem - go and replace your router"

Your argument is like this - other phone has problem so Apple having WiFi problem is also NOT an issue.

No, replacing the router will not fix the issue.  I have an iPad 3rd gen that has WIFI issues that started after installing IOS8 no matter where I go.  My girlfriend has an iPad mini with no issues.  Both of us are on IOS 8.2.  If it was the router then both iPads more than likely would be having speed issues.  Below is video of what I'm seeing.  The same "slowdown" would happen on IOS8-8.1.3 if I just had bluetooth on.  It doesn't matter if audio is being streamed over WIFI or if it's being played locally.  A router doesn't care if you have bluetooth on and/or are streaming to it so it looks like my issue is inside of the iPad more than likely with the IOS.  Also Apple has contacted me to collect logs on my iPad and to answer a form about my environment.  It seems like they are more interested on everything outside of the iPad rathre than focus on IOS8 that broke all of our devices.
