Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

There is no iOS 8 "mess".

So... eventally Apple (and Samsung's) small percentage of owners who can't/won't achieve wi-fi propagation synergy will figure things out or move on.

I think we already figured it out.  It's a problem with IOS8.  As for you move on comment what you're saying?  Since Apple broke our devices with IOS8 we now have to go out and buy a functioning device?

This WIFI problem with IOS8 has not only been documented, proven, and backed up from members on this forum but users on other websites are having the same issues.  The ONE thing in common is everyone is saying when IOS8 was installed these problems started.   We want Apple to dig deeper into why their software broke our/their hardware and we want our devices working like there were with IOS7.

I can see Apple pulling this thread as it is not really achieving anything and it's just giving a space for the three bullies to operate.

The thread's run it course anyway, there is no real solution to the IOS8/wifi problems until Apple has issued a fix and the continuation of the thread is just encouraging people in fruitless endeavour.

I am subscribed to this thread to find a solution.

But now I believe there is no moderator or Apple does not care to look at this thread anymore.

Because both sides (no problem v/s sure problem) are fighting.

Now since its YES or NO, so atleast one side is wrong here.

Moderator OR Apple should have intervened and stopped this NEVER ENDING fight and ban who is on WRONG SIDE.

Either ban those who fight claiming there is NO PROBLEM or ban those who claim there is PROBLEM.

But since it has not happened it is clear that Apple does not care for the community.

It is neither denying there is ISSUE nor declaring there is ISSUE.

But simply enjoying this ongoing fight amongst Apple users. (Reminds of two cats and a Monkey story)

SAD! I am one user who is suffering from the WiFi issue and now also suffering from these fights.

Someone needs to stop this. But who?

amishmm, Apple do monitor the threads as I have had a couple of posts pulled.

Whether there is a human or some form of word-checker doing the monitoring, I do not know.

The issue lies solely with Apple (they designed the software and hardware and I never had any issues prior to IOS8). Three of the self proclaimed "helpful posters" try to blame various combinations of router/router settings/idevice settings, etc, but this, as expected, has been fairly fruitless.

Only Apple can issue the necessary IOS8 fix.

The truth be known, I wonder if it is Apple themselves who are gloating about setting Apple user against Apple user?

They must have known, within a short while of IOS8 launch, that the product was never going to work properly.

And you know that for a fact?

On what do you base your statement?

"I think we already figured it out.  It's a problem with IOS8.  As for you move on comment what you're saying?  Since Apple broke our devices with IOS8 we now have to go out and buy a functioning device?"

...If you (and others) are still pointing the finger at iOS 8.x as the definitive smoking gun for your wi-fi problem because “the day you installed iOS 8.x, your wi-fi stopped working”, you haven't really figured anything out and you don't get:

    1) moving target interdependencies between Apple's, Samsung's and Microsoft's (READ those links) products and 3rd party router manufacturer's products.

    2) the fact that technology isn't stagnant

    3) the fact that backwards compatibility (WITH ANYTHING) isn't a guarantee

Apple, Samsung and Microsoft are moving FORWARD with their programming architectures and will continue to do so.  That's why they all word their software and hardware warranties appropriately because - they all know what I just stated (again)...  MOBILE DEVICE MANUFACTURERS CAN'T FORCE 3RD PARTY WIFI MANUFACTURERS INTO COMPATIBILITY NOR DO THEY GUARANTEE 3RD PARTY INTEROPERABILITY/COMPATIBILITY.

Interestingly, NOBODY (here) seems to want to hold their router manufacturer potentially culpable for their inability to keep up with the big player gear either do they?  Do the links above sorta support what I've been saying? Of course they do...

Lastly, complaints about speed drops mean NOTHING here since NOBODY can confirm your bandwidth “health” from the curb anyway - much less determine if you dropped or dunked your device - much less if your router ***** - much less if you haven’t bothered to replace it or update it for years…

So again, if you can’t return defective gear, purchase compatible gear (as some here have), fix your own gear (i.e. keep up with the rest of us) "move on"...

Well I am using an AirPort Extreme (which I checked reviews before purchasing last August and it seemed to be highly rated)

I have been back to Apple twice, they have wiped & reset but as the phone is out of warranty then suggested I buy a new phone - I would if I knew it would solve problem but the genius said he couldn't guarantee it would!

What was the result after you requested to speak to a manager?

I saw a manager on my second visit - had to rebook & go back an hour later as he was busy

while I was away he was briefed by the genius, he looked at phone, said "it's connected OK so what's your problem"

I explained it would probably drop out but he said there was nothing he could do, as far as he was concerned it was working - but I could pay for a repair

So I asked what would be repaired if the phone was OK? No answer. Asked again, he said it would be an investigation.

I said I would be happy to pay if it guaranteed fix, manager said he could give no guarantee - and he had to deal with someone else as I'd taken up too much of his time. As he walked away I looked at phone - no wifi!

Went after manager to show him - he was talking to another genius, tried to show him, was told he was busy & to make another appointment

Seems like customer service is consistent

You were told "I'm busy" and to "make another appointment" by an Apple Store Manager?  You stopped your process there and went home?
