Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

Yes, I had my original genius appointment after work so it was near the time the shop closed the manager did me a favour by seeing me that day. It was past the closing time so I was asked to leave

Well aside from the rude responses, that makes sense. How do you handle rude customer service people?  I personally unload both barrels but that's another discussion.  So you were told there'd be a fee for diagnostic - no guarantee to repair at closing time yes?

They weren't really rude, after all they had done me a big favour by fitting me in at short notice (I had only called the day before to book an appointment) and the manager was very busy but agreed to see me and I did take up a lot of his time

Because the genius has already wiped, restored and tested my phone he (the manager) said it proved there was nothing wrong with it and as it was out of warranty I would have to pay for further diagnostics

So yes I left and went home, the door was locked as I left

I typed the following reply :

IPhone 4s.running 8.2  other device sharing wi-fi is my iPad  2 which was not affected by ios upgrade but I've left at 8.0.2 just in case. The router info is BT Home Hub 5 (Type A) | Software version 4.7.5.1.83.8.204 | Last updated 09/01/15  and I am never more than 10 feet away. There are no error messages just drops back to cellular 3G for no reason and requires power down/up to restore wi-fi. The only remedial action I need to take is to go back to iOS 7 but as confirmed by your link this is not possible. No need for info on ISp, area, bandwidth etc as the issue is with wi-fi so not relevant.

Whlist I agree that technology moves on, Apple deemed that this iOS upgrade was applicable to my 4s and consequently broke it.

BUt looks like the Post from mmurray47 to which I was replying has been deleted

    What do you mean?

He asked for details of my phone & router I replied with some details but can't get all until later, then he asked again but his questions and my replies have gone

What rules have I broken? All I did was put details of my phone & home network speed

Corporate security policy in many large organizations requires that customer not be in stores after hours. Sometimes stores in shopping malls are required by the mall to be closed and locked up by a certain time. If you are being polite and there is a likelihood that whatever needs to be done can be done in reasonable amount of time, managers may continue to help you. If, however, you are being disrespectful or excessively demanding and/or what you need done can't be done before the employees need to leave the building, yes, you may be asked to leave.

When a post is deleted for violating the TOU all replies to it also vanish, collateral damage if you like.

I Wasn't complaining - they were trying to help and I had been there some time. Even if they hadn't aAked me to go I would have needed to to catch a train myself

it was mmurray47 who seemed surprised & said he would let them have both barrels

    "...mmurray is just playing you..."

I started to but Old_Chap cleared things up and seems sincere/legit - unlike others here.  I'm interested in hearing how far people (including him) are going to resolve their issues. I can understand frustration with a mid term/off warranty lemon phone - especially if funds are tight but hey; you can buy a 4s or 5c/s refurb on the cheap anywhere if you've exhausted every avenue.  I'm just not buying people sitting around waiting for Apple to "fix" their wifi interoperability problems before taking common sense steps and I'm CERTAINLY not buying the idea that multiple phone replacements still come up wifi short.  Better chance at hitting Powerball lotto...

Okay - have you seen anything related to the BT Home Hub 5 related to "un-syncing the 2.4Ghz and the 5Ghz bands" - on the router?
