Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

Wow, I'm actually on this board looking for assistance and instead, I'm going through unhelpful (and disrespectful) comment after comment.

Anyways, has anyone had any luck with Wi-Fi connectivity (not just performance) on iOS 8.x.x devices and constant dropping? I'm not worried about performance so much as connectivity consistency right now. I have two access points in my house, both of which are hard wired via CAT6 cables to a network switch and then eventually router then modem. I have had no issue with any of my other devices in regards to Wi-Fi connectivity, and these devices include a Nexus 5, Nexus 7, Samsung Galaxy S5, Macbook Air, iPad 2 on iOS 7.1.2, Chromecast, and two Windows PCs. The few devices that have trouble keeping a consistent connection to my access points include an iPhone 5s, two iPhone 5's, two iPhone 6's, and an iPad Mini, all of which are on iOS 8.1 or above. I've also temporarily shortened the range on the AP's so devices aren't hopping from one AP to the other and set up a test environment with one AP and two iOS devices in case it was an interference problem.

It's pretty clear from here and from other users in this thread that the culprit is iOS 8.x.x, so my question is, what have other users done to temporarily mitigate the issue? I've disabled Bluetooth, set DNS and static IP's, reset network settings, and even wiped an entire device, all of which have not provided any adequate fix to the problem. If there's another suggestion, please let me know.

You're quite right, I've suffered the same - came to try & find solutions but just got scorn and abuse

The best advice came from PDXMRH, posted at 04:50 on 21st March. Suggest you have a read of that

Anthing like a Apple tv hooked into wifi? Try removing them one by one... Unplug them from the system... See if one is the problem... My Apple tv was the problem on my network.... When i purchased a 50 foot cable for each Apple tv... No more problems... Wi-Fi works perfectly with no more slow speeds and airplay button stops dropping off of my Control Panel... Did you try my Google fiber IPv6 DNS in your products?

Also try running a DNS benchmark from your computer and see if you have the best DNS set up in your Wi-Fi as well... If you have a Internet service provider router and a Wi-Fi make sure you set the DNS's primary and secondary to the same numbers in your router from your Internet provider and your Wi-Fi... Then use the Google fiber IPv6 in your Apple products...  IPv6 will tunnel down to IPv4... Don't worry if you don't have IPv6

Yes the thread is out of control a bit. Some going off on tangents, those of us convinced ios 8 is at fault, those who do not. Fed up with the bickering. I think everyone needs to hold their hands up a bit. We will agree to disagree I think. Anyway my own personal view is ios 8 is having trouble with AirPlay so if you have any of these try unplugging them and see if it helps. I think maybe the Broadcom wifi chips are getting overwhelmed. The implementation in ios 7 was fine for me but in ios 8 it's not so good. Not dropping wifi so I am far better off than many poor souls but throughput is reduced at times and AirPlay discovery sometimes painfully slow. Like you I have tried all such as resets, restores, different routers. I have multiple non overlapping access points too and ios 8 gets in a mess with these too. Iphone 5s worst affected, iPad third generation a bit better, two iPad minis not terrible but it's not as it was on ios 7. We have loads of other devices too which cope brilliantly with our wifi. personally ios 8 seems a complex beast, probably apple trying too much too soon - who knows. All can do if it doesn't help for u is cling to hope that ios 8.3 and/ or beyond will be better

It was a pain to get the 50 foot cord installed by drilling a hole by the Internet provider router and running it into the basement and then over to the TV and drilling a hole so that I can run it up near the AppleTV... So i didnt have a bunch of cable sitting around my house... However once I was able to get both of my Apple TVs off of the Wi-Fi network and onto Cable the airplay button stopped dropping off of my iPad mini and my iPhone 5s and my iPhone 6 Plus... All of my slow Wi-Fi speeds instantly stopped and went back to full speed...

Yes I wished that worked for me but my Apple TV is Ethernet wired but still same issue. It's useable but not as it was.

DId you set the Apple tv to the best DNS from the DNS benchmark that was run from your home computer? Or did you allow the AppleTV to automatically set those settings?

I too now own one very useless iPad.  It was a wonderful little companion until Ios 8.2.

Apple?  Will there be a fix soon?

Do you have a smart TV hooked into your system? If so did you set the IP address for your smart TV up for a DMZ In your router?

Try using this in your Wi-Fi DNS...

Like mentioned by some others, this helps with speed but not Wi-Fi disconnecting

And do not have TV, have turned off other devices (and in same room as router) but still loses signal

But other things I've noticed - almost certain this started when devices upgraded to IOS8, when my son comes round his Galaxy never has a problem. When daughter visits (iPhone 6) she loses signal just as in her own house. My wife has an old iPod witn IOS6, never any problems.

My iPhone 5 also suffers the same issues at work and when using public Wi-Fi

Whilst typing this the signal just disappeared & had to log in again.

Last weekend I dug out an old iPhone 4 running IOS 7.1.2. Swapped SIM with adaptor, put same apps. It worked perfectly everywhere

I realise none of this is a scientific test, but the only common factor seems to be IOS8
