Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

I'm unsure which questions you are responding to.

You did try an Apple router - certainly they use Apple routers at the Apple Stores!

You say that you did ask yesterday but got no response.  Are you referring to a request for a manager?  If that happened to me, I would repeat the request until I did get a response and it sure as heck better be "One moment, sir."

I use Cisco routers at my office and an Apple Extreme at home, I have no problems, but I have no problems connecting anywhere, from Metra trains to coffee shops either.

I posed the question to you (replied to your post) at 11pm yesterday

But thank you for answering now

That's why I don't know the model number of my router.  I also have no problems connecting anywhere.  I was out for several hours today and connected to four routers that I never accessed before.  No problem whatever.

The newer Comcast Cisco routers are actually dual routers, one for me to use (with my own private SSID and password) and one for any Comcast customer walking down the street.  I routinely connect to these routers with no difficulties whatever.  The system is really neat.  The WiFi systems are locked in that I must enter an ID and password that identifies me as a Comcast customer.  However, all of these systems use the same ID/password and now I connect automatically anytime that I'm close to one.

I have Comcast as my home provider, I also connect to the Comcast hotspots all around. I use an Apple Extreme for my home network and Cisco 4400 series routers at the office.

As much as I really really hate Comcast, I have to admit that these hotspots are really slick.

Yes, I'm in UK and its 8.32 GMT but time on thread shows 1.32 so I presume Western US time

    I couldn't see anything as x.56

Philly_Phan is in US eastern time zone. That would be equal to 1:32 pm (US Pacific Time) + 3 hours. Timestamps may have been converted to his/her local time. So he says 3:53 pm (US Eastern) while it is still 12:53 pm (US Pacific).

It is weird the issues. I never drop wifi, it's always there. But I see frequent reduced throughput on the 5s and also (albeit to a lesser extent the iPad 2nd gen). We have two iPad minis in the house that seem more or less fine (very occasional odd behaviour). The 5s is worst affected though and causes my most frustration as it's the device I am always using. I am convinced airplay is the trigger because if I unplug apple TV and airport express no more issue with speed. Also I can fix the 5s temporarily speed wise by flicking control centre up and physically touching the AirPlay icon to display the AirPlay device list. I don't actually select one. Just need to display them and then just flick control centre back down. Doing this restores full speed at least for a while. Strange huh? And only since ios 8 installed. So for me, ios 8 does work but not well at least on a couple devices. I speculate that AirPlay is a major factor and the wifi chips in those devices cannot cope in the ios 8 environment. I am frustrated as a result and i have a fair amount of disdain to ios 8  - the wifi is very important but it's not the only thing ios 8 has done badly as I see many other glitches/bugs/things no longer done as well unfortunately but those are separate things
