Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

I Would also like to add that no other household device exhibits any issues or slowdown. My PCs which are all windows run itunes latest versions and as a result AirPlay. No problems in anything they do wifi wise. And they run and stream AirPlay to perfection to both the Apple TV and airport express (which solelu exists to serve a hifi).

People having WiFi problems seems to be running WPA2/AES. Perhaps a compatibility issue?

My router's WiFi is configured for WPA2PSK-AES and I haven't had the slightest problem whatever.  I've also connected to probably fifteen or so other routers with unknown WiFi configurations and haven't had problems with any of them either.

Instead, go to an Apple Store and demonstrate the problem there.  If the resident "Genius" can't solve the problem for you, ask to speak to a manager.

This is without doubt a software issue. mmurray47 can bleat on all he likes about the fact that people have updated their routers and so on, and submit the same post over and over again. (Apple mole?). That does not change the fact that my 5s running iOS8 and my iPad mini running iOS8 now constantly lose wi-fi connection and run slower than my wife's 4s running OS7. Proved it just a moment ago running the two phones next to each other.  I am not changing my router. I will also not be asking the people at my local coffee shop to change theirs either, or the local mall for that matter. The fact is, before I 'upgraded' both my phone and my iPad, they worked perfectly. Now I have nothing but problems. My next phone will not be an apple unless this is sorted and soon.

I have been to the Apple Store and seen the so called genius. That was a joke. Restore the phone / iPad, that will solve it. Like **** it will. No change whatsoever.

In my opinion, too many people are having these issues, this thread proves that, and apple should be doing something about it. mmurray47 is lucky enough to not have the problem, wonderful, I am pleased for him, but jog on and respect the fact that some people actually are having problems and stop posting the same things over and over again. Doesn't help anyone.

Apple, grow a pair, admit you have made a mistake and if people want to downgrade to iOS7, let them. It would show a great deal of character, and a great deal of customer appreciation. Steve Jobs would have done the right thing.

As a passing note, I have upwards of 10 Apple products in my household. If this isn't sorted soon, I guarantee that there will be no more.

I think that you should purchase Android.

When you subsequently spoke to a manager what were you told?

Oh, the manager is 'unaware of any wi-fi issues on any of their products'. Seems to be apples default setting. 'Try restoring the phone etc etc'.

Seriously, it is like banging your head against a brick wall. You get nowhere. Apple don't care. They have a store full of people buying phones and computers, to lose me as a customer means nothing to them. That is half the problem. As it doesn't affect a huge amount of people compared to the amount that are or seem to be unaffected, they ignore it. If they lose one customer, they know that 10 will replace them the next day.

So your solution is to whine to other IOS owners that obviously are unable to assist you.  Do you like banging your head against a brick wall?

Why are you even trolling this thread?

    Whoopee, your phone works. Fascinating.

My comments are on here in the vain hope that Apple might actually take notice.

Why are you posting here, simply to gloat that you are the special one and your phone works fine? Very sad.

Thank you for posting your issues. I have been following this thread for a while, over 100 pages by now, and while various individuals report no problems, the vast majority state that they developed issues with Wi-Fi after iOS 8. To recap:

    1) Those reporting problems overwhelmingly state that their issues started right after updating to iOS 8. They state that they had no issues with iOS 7 and it was only after updating that they noticed a problem. This would point to an issue with iOS 8.

    2) Those reporting problems overwhelmingly state that after updating to iOS 8, their non-iOS devices continue to work perfectly well with the same routers and ISPs and that their iOS products are the only devices experiencing problems. This would also point to an issue with iOS 8, not their routers or ISPs.

    3) An individual with extensive code writing experience tested a potential source of the problem and concluded that there is an issue with AirDrop / Bluetooth in iOS 8. He stated that resolving this conflict will not be easy and the reasons are posted in his article on the web.

    4) Apple is aware that there is an issue. They have contacted many of the posters here who reported problems (me included). They spent considerable time in each instance, downloaded software to the user’s iOS devices and collected logs for their engineers to analyze. They also collected extensive data on routers and settings. Apple has spent substantial technician time on this endeavor – not likely to do so unless they felt that there was merit to this issue.

I was told by an AppleCare Level 2 tech that developing iOS 8.2 for the upcoming Apple Watch was taking precedence over “issues”. Hopefully now that 8.2 is out they will address this problem.

Actually, it's a very tiny minority.  Perhaps several hundred out of millions and millions.  Your allegation is a joke.
