Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

Ask them.  Apple seldom admits publicly they have issues.

I asked the person that made the allegation.  Surely he/she can back up that claim?

Based on sensible comments on here and other sites, plus newspaper articles, probably several hundred

And before you say it, there are millions of Apple devices that don't have problems so a very small proportion. But that's no consolation to those who do have trouble

I agree completely.  I also hold the position that "several hundred" with problems compared with "millions" without problems certainly indicates that the problem is not systemic and not because of defects in the IOS.  In fact, there could be multiple causes and that's probably the case since the symptoms vary considerably.

I have to go back to my recommendation that those with problems take their devices to the resident "Genius" at an Apple Store.  If no joy, ask to speak with a manager.  If still no joy, go up the ladder.

I've seen posters tell me that a visit to the store is too much trouble and that the "know" that Apple screwed up the IOS update.  Well, that belief is obviously incorrect because an IOS screwup would cause problems with many more devices than "several hundred."  There was one poster that told me that he went to the store, was dissatisfied with the explanation but then he absolutely refused to speak to a manager.  There was even one poster that admitted that his device was jailbroke!

By far the funniest posts are those that provide links to "news articles" and the news articles justify their statements by including links right back to this thread.

So there are several hundred unhappy owners that take out their frustration on a user-to-user forum.  C'mon.  You (plural) are unwilling to fight Apple so you spend your time annoying other owners.  Sorry but I don't have any sympathy.

You'll probably have this post deleted - you used the J word!

I replied to someone saying they were thinking of doing that, told them that j********** wouldn't do any god, and would invalidate warranty

The "ministry of truth" deleted it because of the J word

I don't expect my post to be deleted.

You don't understand the rules and the logic behind enforcing those rules.  The post to which you were replying was the offending post.  Typically when a post is removed for cause, all responses to that post are also removed.  That eliminates the possibility of a response (even in disagreement) stating the words or the spirit of the original offending post.  In some cases, totally innocent posts are inadvertently part of the "collateral damage" but there aren't enough moderators to thoroughly analyze each and every response.

Well, I;ve just upgraded to IOS8.2, and spent 3 hours trying to get wifi to work, I reset network settings, changed channels... the works...nothing, no connection to wifi at all. This has effectively destroyed my phone, no wifi connection means it is in effect useless for me since I use it for work while out and about, thx  Apple, for nothing.

If any one can let me know the best way to roll back and also contact engineering/support at apple to try and get this fixed I would really appreciate some help.

    thx folks....

If you look through the comments (I know there are a lot) you'll see the problems being discussed are wi-fi dropping out for no reason.

You say you cannot connect at all, which sounds like something different. Is your phone in warranty, if so go to Apple for repair or replacement

If not try deleting phone & restoring as that may remove any bugs in settings

Last night I upgraded my ipad mini retina (ie. gen 2) from ios 8.1.x to ios 8.2.  After the update, my wifi was disabled and grayed out (so wifi can not be turned on).  Bluetooth also seems to be broken - under setting it just spins, where as under quick settings menu I can turn it on, but it never actually turns on.  In the Settings->General->About, I can see Wi-Fi Address and Bluetooth listed and both list their MAC addresses.

I tried to do a network reset, a reboot.  Neither helped.  I went to the apple store, where they did a full reset and ios re-install.   When they started the process they got an error about there being a firmware corruption.  Nevertheless, they managed to get past it and re-install the ios.  After a full re-install, the problem persists.

They claimed that its a hardware failure.  I pointed out that a likelihood of a hardware failure RIGHT AFTER AN OS UPDATE is extremely unlikely, and it was more likely that part of the update they exposed an existing defect or incompatibility.  They told me that if apple notices other devices having similar issue they would probably issue a credit of some sort.  Then they proceeded to tell me that my only option was do an "out of warranty" (I bought the ipad 1 year and 4 months ago) replacement which would cost me $240+ and would come with a 90 warranty.

And I thought Apple really takes care of their customers.  Being a big big apple fan with many devices, this was a big disappointment.

What is your basis for that statement?
