Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

Just downloaded - took a bit longer than I thought because the wi-fi dropped out (twice) during the download

No way old_chap, I think you'll find its nothing to do with the issues and is definitely not an admission there was a problem, and I should also point out that if after updating your wifi problems do disappear, that won't be the iOS update, it will just be your hardware suddenly and very miraculously recovering at the same time you updated.

Just got a call from AppleCare informing me that iOS 8.3 is out and that it contains bug fixes for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth resolving many of the problems reported on this thread for months. I was going to post the long list of fixes but you beat me to it which is great, thanks!!!

We'll see what evolves once 8.3 is tested by those having Wi-Fi problems - time will tell if it indeed has resolved the issues. However it is comforting to know that Apple has finally acknowledged that there were bugs with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth and that those reporting problems were indeed correct regardless of the trolls who said otherwise, sometimes with offensive and derogatory words.

So for the trolls who stated repeatedly that there was nothing wrong with iOS it is time to eat your words.  Enjoy!!!

Seems it's not an ios 8.3 issue - store trailers were also stuttering, so I restored Apple TV and re logged myself in, seems to of done the trick. I thought it was another iOS 8 issue cropping up.

so now ios 8.3 has been live a few hours how are people finding the wifi? Mine seems much the same - works well enough but still intermittent speed drops for no reason. But for most part it's working pretty well, not to the iOS 7 levels mind but am content enough

I wonder if you'd be so kind as to address those posts that are shouting "8.3 ruined my iPad - everything was perfect before the update!"

        •    Fixes an issue where hands-free phone calls could become disconnected

I had this problem too but I thought it was network issue and never reported!

I am yet to download and install 8.3 and hope that all my issues are resolved esp. WiFi.

And I also request some group of members here to realize that when people report problem consistently it CAN ACTUALLY be manufacturers fault.

If everything was working fine earlier and something went bad after an OS update, it is indeed likely to be OS fault and not ROUTER fault.

If your device does not have issue then atleast please respect those who have issues instead of bashing them.

If you do not have solution - it is fine and acceptable. But atleast do not disrupt the forum by fighting and arguing with those who have problem.

    Thank you and peace.

I upgraded to iOS 8.3 with great hope!

But unfortunately it has not solved my issue.

I did forget network - did not solve.

I did reset network configuration - did not solve

My WiFi still drops after few minutes.

It shows WiFi icon indicating its connected but apps like whatsapp show "Connecting..." but nothing happens.

Toggling WiFi (off and on) solves the issue

Looks like that the fix works only for few devices. Hope they release fix for my device by 8.4

I've been hoping for a fix for this forever. Things seem to be much improved at this point. crossing my fingers and hoping it holds.  No issues so far: iPad Air 2, iPhone. 6, my wife has an iPhone 5 and iPad Air that still need to be updated. Will be comparing. Biggest problems for me were very slow web browsing (timeouts and slow page delivery) and AirPlay cutting out constantly (Often coinciding with she other devices would wake up).

8.3 seems to have provided fixes for all the problems I was having too.

    So far:-

No password rejection at log on to a network.

No dropped wi-fi connexions or failed hand offs

No drop-outs when streaming audio by airplay

    No massive speed drops

I have had no connectivity issues.  The problem I have had is that whenever I turn Bluetooth / Airdrop ON on my iPad or iPhone my download speeds slow down to a crawl (as others have reported here also).  With Bluetooth OFF I get my rated ISP DL speed of 15 Mbps.  With Bluetooth ON my DL speeds slow down to below 1 Mbps.  iOS 8.3 did not solve that problem for me.  See picture below showing 5 speed tests.  The 2 tests at the bottom showing Downloads of 15.21 and 15.22 Mbps were taken with Bluetooth and Airdrop OFF.  The 3 tests on top showing DLs of 0.27, 0.64 and 0.43 were taken with Bluetooth and Airdrop ON.  So the conflict between AWDL and AirDrop / Bluetooth previously described on this thread continues!!!!

I did some test and the results are some strange. (iPhone 6 8.3)

In my case when I turn on Bluetooth and Airdrop I got best speed results than turn off this features.

Hi rodgui, what is your rated ISP speed?  Do you get that speed with Bluetooth OFF?  What do you get with Bluetooth OFF and ON?

Just spoke with AppleCare Level 2 again.  The tech is at a loss regarding the reason why the iPhone drops speeds with Bluetooth ON.  As I told him the iPad at the moment works ok with Bluetooth ON or OFF (with big emphasis on at the moment).  If it is like the past, in a day or two it could very well be the other way around, i.e., the iPad may drop speeds with Bluetooth ON and the iPhone may work ok with it ON.  As has been reported on the web and here previously a Wi-Fi bounce will temporarily restore speeds but they will not last.  My solution for now is to leave Bluetooth OFF on both devices and only turn them on when I want to use AirDrop (at crawl speeds).  For whatever it is worth I also have a MacBook Pro Retina and Bluetooth works perfectly there all the time.  This points to an iOS issue, not the router, as the MBP uses the same router and ISP.

AppleCare Level 2 stated that they will kick this up to Engineering / Development but judging by the past a fix will not be imminent.

I had that issue with IOS8-8.1.3.  When my bluetooth was on I'd have dialup speeds.  With my bluetooth off it would be fine.

With IOS8.2 it got better but not perfect.  I would get dial up speeds ONLY when streaming to my bluetooth speaker(see video below).

With IOS8.2 I reset everything back to defaults(IOS8.2)and it was "better" but there was still a minor slowdown(20% slower) when I would stream to my bluetooth speaker.

I have not tested everything yes with IOS8.3 as I'm traveling for work.

I hate to say this but I would suggest wiping your device and see if that fixes the issue.  I know you don't want to do that but when I did it I did get "better" results.

Thanks for your reply.  I remember reading your posts about your issues.  My original iPhone was reset to factory and when that did not solve the issue the AppleCare Level 2 rep authorized a phone replacement.  iPhone #2 failed within one day (different issue, bad display) so I got iPhone #3.  iPhone #3 also has the issue so very likely not phone hardware.  Therefore in essence my phone has been "wiped" twice already, the original was reset to factory to no avail and the new one set as new also has the problem.  Since my Mac works fine with Bluetooth ON (and also my Dell and at the moment my iPad Air) it is likely not the router.  The article on the web that cannot be linked here describes the reasons for this.  I don't use Bluetooth / Airdrop much so it is not a big deal for me but would be nice to have AirDrop occasionally when I want to transfer files between devices.  I can do so now but at slow speeds.  Maybe, just maybe, with the next update.  Not holding my breath....
