Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

I've been using 8.3 on my iPhone since it came out & the connectivity problems seem to have been sorted (famous last words?) so I'm now updating my iPad

At home, & in cafes etc no more drop-outs, so well done Apple for eventually sorting it out

Also noticed something strange, might be coincidence, but the battery is now lasting longer. Before upgrade with average (for me) use I'd only get about 5 hours after fully charging. Today it's been over 6 hours and I've still got 40%.

Iphone 5-Login credentials have been fixed with 8.3 update.  Holding connection fine now.  I'm still experiencing extremely slow WiFi.  Update did not fix all the issues 100%.

i am experiencing the same. No problems with log-in credentials or holding a connection however my Wi-Fi is very slow IF AirDrop and Bluetooth are turned on, OK with them off. Would you turn them off on your phone and then report here if it made any difference? Thanks.

I have been following this thread for months and I thought I would offer the following comments.

With the release of iOS 8.3 Apple has finally acknowledged that there was a problem with Wi-Fi in iOS 8 which was substantial enough for Apple to address. “Fixes” have been included in 8.3 in an attempt to correct many of the issues reported here. While it took 7 months for Apple to address these bugs, it is encouraging that they have finally acknowledged them.

8.3 has been out for two days and it is too early to know if the “fixes” have solved the problems. Seven people have reported on this thread so far regarding their experience with 8.3. In addition there is another site I follow and 2 people have reported there. Of the 9 reports I have seen, 3 state that 8.3 solved their Wi-Fi issues, 4 report that it did not and two reported mixed results, some Wi-Fi issues fixed, others not. Additional time and input is needed. It appears (this is a preliminary statement subject to revision) that connectivity has been improved (or solved) while AirDrop / Bluetooth issues have not.

As has been reported on the web and by others here, with every Wi-Fi bounce, i.e., every time a device is disconnected/reconnected, be it by switching to a different AP or turning Wi-Fi on and off, etc., the bounce resets some of the AWDL characteristics and Wi-Fi performance is restored for a period of time. It would be of value if those reporting good results would report again in a week or two to verify if the good results have continued.

I've waited a couple of days to see how things are before posting, I can say for me and also my Brother both on iPhone5s we have noticed the wifi is a lot better than it was and seems so far to continue to be so.

I don't use airplay and bluetooth is on but not used on anything as a rule, but wifi has always been the problem for me, with the drop outs and poor reception, I haven't noticed one drop out yet since this new update so keeping my fingers crossed its worked for many of us that have had to endure this.

I have no statistical evidence but I also think my battery life is also improved now and the biggest change is the iPhone has not got anywhere near as hot as it did before, this has also seemed to coincide with the drop outs for me but I cannot say whether its linked, but either way, in two days the iPhone just hasn't reached the same temperature it was getting, which makes me wonder if the chip or what ever isn't being put under as much strain (yes I'm not a technical wizard with such things), so just my thoughts on that.

I hope its improved the wifi for you guys too and that its remains stable as before I would get a period of time where it would seem to improve after trying out different things, only to revert again, but I don't believe it ever remained stable for two days straight so am keeping my fingers crossed.

I too am also glad to see Apple have at last shown in a more public way there WAS an issue with the wifi, rather than just admitting it on a one to one basis with some of us who spoke to them on the phone as they had done, I also hope we didn't have too many following the so called "advice" from the "experts" on here and changing routers and equipment which most of us with brains knew wasn't at fault.

Shame on you Trolls trying to kill the thread with your nonsense and personal attacks, at least now this has at last shown you all up to be the ones in the wrong as many of us knew full well, you can slink off now and try destroy another thread.

As for the points and dots by your name it means nothing, anyone can post a new thread and then just get his buddies to respond so he can then click the "this helped me" and so they get points easily, so its no evidence of you being either knowledgeable or helpful, and fact is looking at the postings of one of the worse offenders Philly_phandango you can see most of their posts are either copy paste answers repeated time and time again, or sarcastic non helpful insults. About time you grew up maybe. Still, we all see clearly now what you were all about.

By the way don't bother to reply to me here as this is my last read/post of this thread. I don't feed the Trolls!

YEs. I'm curious to know how many here will interpret the reported mixed results myself. Magical how Apple's updates manage to keep so many devices wi-fi functional while breaking some and fixing others all at the same time.

Consistent with more than one cause.

I wonder if you'd be so kind as to assist those that have been posting that 8.3 ruined their previously flawless iPads?  Perhaps they're nothing but trolls?

Just let those that check this forum, the newest iOS update (8.3) did not correct the issue with the Wi-Fi, even though the update specifically stated "Improved performance for:"..."Wi-Fi" and "Wi-Fi...fixes:"..."addresses an issue where some devices disconnected intermittently from Wi-Fi networks".

Good try Apple, but the update still did not correct the issue on my phone.  This is really sad!

And yet many users, some of them in this thread say just the opposite, are they deluding themselves?

So far there are 3 users on this thread saying that it solved their problems so "many" is a stretch.  They are not deluding themselves however.  Apple fixed several Wi-Fi bugs but apparently not others, at least not yet.  Connectivity issues have been improved for some while AirDrop / Bluetooth issues have not for others.  Like you alluded to earlier there is more than one cause / bug.

What is your criteria for 'many'

And you did note that I said, "some in this thread" or did you just choose to ignore that?
