Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

Thank you elcpu.  You did the right thing and hopefully this discussion can stay on topic now.  Thank you again.

I am quite happy with my ipad air ios 7.12. I reverted it back from 8 as soon as I found it was working so bad with wifi and airplay streaming connected with timecapsule latest model. Now I need to use an ios 8 app but I know there is a big risk. Should I have to close my eyes and do It?

I have updated all of my devices to IOS 8, none of them have any wifi issues at all.

IOS 8 caused some problems for people including myself regarding my WIFI speeds.  My problem was if my bluetooth was just on my WIFI speeds were as fast as dial up.  IOS8.2 got better as I would only get dial up speeds if I was streaming audio to my bluetooth speaker.  Rather than wait for Apple do something I wiped my iPad out and that gave me much better results but I can still see a decrease in my WIFI speeds when I'm streaming audio to a bluetooth speaker.  Some people here have had good luck with IOS 8.3 and some have not.  An example of this is me where some APs would keep prompting me for the password (a topic discussed a lot here before IOS 8.3 came out) and when I upgraded to IOS8.3 that problem went away for me but not some others.  Some people said that IOS8.3 broke their devices.

All of us here don't think the problem is just with IOS 8.x versions.  We're convinced it's a combination of IOS 8.? and something else but we don't' know what that something else is as not everyone is having problems like we are.

What I would recommend since I've seen improvements when I wiped my device is consider upgrading, wiping your device, and adding all of your apps back.  I know that sounds odd but like I said I saw improvements in my device after I wiped it.  I an't explain why.  All of these issues are all over the place so no one can really tell you if it will work or not but if you upgraded to IOS 8 in the past and had issues then there is a decent chance that it might still act funny with IOS 8, or not.

Below is a list of things fixed in IOS 8.3 for WIFI and Bluetooth.

    Wi-Fi and Bluetooth fixes

    • Fixes an issue where you could be continuously prompted for login credentials
    • Addresses an issue where some devices disconnect intermittently from Wi-Fi networks
    • Fixes an issue where hands-free phone calls could become disconnected
    • Fixes an issue where audio playback could stop working with some bluetooth speakers

That surely was an interesting recommendation considering previous posts.

I have EXACTLY the same issue. Spent forever on the phone with Apple and they even had me ship my ipad back and replace it so they could study it... Like most people report I had no issues on old IOS release on either ipad or iphone and they refused to let me roll back the upgrade of the ios even though i requested it within days of the upgrade... Bit the bullet as nothing would work and purchased new iphone 6plus. Guess what same problem!!! When I turn off everything in house that is bluetooth driven and unplug them... problem remains. when I turn off bluetooth on iphone and ipad both works perfectly... I have been convinced all along it is an IOS issue and Apple just wont own it! so frustrating,

I upgraded iphone 6plus yesterday to IOS latest release - no change. Issue still there. Done investing time in this - just living with under 1mb download or not using bluetooth which ***** as it kills enjoying my music on my speakers...

Sorry to hear that you are having problems with Bluetooth also. iOS 8.3 solved many of the Wi-Fi issues reported here but clearly not all. I have turned Bluetooth OFF on my iPhone and iPad (my wife has done the same) except when I use AirDrop (and then I just live with the slow speeds). I am having no other problems with Wi-Fi other than AirDrop / Bluetooth. As many others mentioned here, Apple has collected logs and detailed device information on these issues and we are all hoping that future updates (8.3.x ??) will provide additional fixes.

I am going to consider to upgrade now .  I reverted back to ios 7 just a few days before they removed the digital signature. Maybe 8.3 will be better. Thanks
