Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

You're just taking an unnecessary risk, although 8.3 has improved things (a bit) for myself it is nowhere near as good as IOS7.

Have you tried changing the DNS settings - this was covered a few pages back (unless now deleted)

Whilst it didn't cure the drop-out problems I was having, it did give an improvement in speed

These individuals apparently felt that they were immune to the ToU since they have a high level of Apple points. Regardless of their level, all posters need to abide by the ToU or risk loosing their posting privileges.

Well done from me as well.

Now I wonder which two individuals it could be?

I've the same issue with my iPhone 5S and iPad mini. I have a 200 Mbps line

I don't believe that you have a 200Mb/s upload line, test it for yourself using this test and post the actual result please.

Hi Bootsox. I saw your earlier comments to me - thanks for the nice words. Regarding kingmorgan and 8.3, I agree that it would be a risk. He stated that he needed an app that only works on iOS 8 thus his quandary. Some good guys like London_ Lad have reported great results with 8.3, others unfortunately have not. I am on 8.3 and as I have posted I have solid connectivity and range, no real issues with Wi-FI on 4 iOS devices except for AirDrop / Bluetooth. When they are off all is ok, when they are on (on any of 4 devices) speeds drop to below 1 Mbps, still usable but at slow rates. I am typing this on my MacBook Pro (late 2014) and it has no issues with Wi-Fi or AD/BT (neither do my 2 Dells). My recommendation to kingmorgan is to update if he really needs the iOS 8 app (a gamble which may workout ok, but then again!!). Apple addressed some of the Wi-Fi / Bluetooth issues with 8.3 but not all. IMO other fixes are likely with subsequent updates.

Just wondering - if he does a full back-up, then upgrades to IOS8, if it doesn't work woils a full reset & restore from back-up put it back to IOS7?

Hi old-chap, thanks for your suggestion.  Yes I have changed the DNS on 2 of my devices (mine, my wife's are as-is). I am using Google's DNS 8.8.8.8. Changing the DNS may improve the latency (ping) speed slightly but this is not an issue for me. I routinely get pings in the 20-25 ms, good enough from my end. I likewise have no problems with drop-outs or UL speeds, only with DL IF I have AD / BT on.

    No, it will not.

I don't think so since Apple is not signing iOS 7 (has not for quite a while). I think the reset and restore will take the device to 8.3.
