Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

No, restore operation does not restore iOS.

After updating to IOS 8.3, I have had a couple of blissful weeks with wifi not dropping out. Today, however, it has dropped out. Is it a one-off, or has anyone else had initial success with the wifi problem only for it to return?

    very best regards

Well done from me as well. Now I wonder which two individuals it could be?

Thank you Insiderinformation. Is that a rhetorical question? I choose to not name the two individuals in order to not escalate the difficulties further. Those that have been following this thread for a while are aware of the issue. While these two continue to post, their posts have been more civil so far, hope it continues. And to make sure, someone mentioned PS61 above. He is not one of the two, his posts were of no concern.  (PS61, thank you for your comments).

As I mentioned before, the purpose of this forum (per Apple, not me) is to post issues and potential solutions. This thread has been of value to many, myself included, and I hope this continues.

I upgraded as soon as 8.3 was available, has worked fine (hope that's not tempting fate!). Did have one drop out, but that could be due to anything and it reconnected without needing to reselect network or put in password

Pamelaie, first please note that I am not having problems with connectivity or drop-outs, only with speeds when AirDrop / Bluetooth are on. With that caveat, when I first upgraded my iPhone 5 and my iPad Air to 8.3 both maintained good DL speeds even with AD / BT on for a couple of days and then without any changes to my router or the iOS devices they both developed the issue again (not at the same time). The iPhone worked ok for perhaps 2 days and the iPad for a little longer, around 4 days. There are reports on the web detailing what is described as a Wi-Fi bounce where speeds are restored for a while after a reset of Wi-Fi, be it a disconnect from an AP, or resetting Wi-Fi on the iOS device, etc. but this bounce does not last. This is perhaps what happened to us.

Thank you very much for explaining your situation, I'm sorry if I did the replying incorrectly. I shall read about the bounce. Does this mean the IOS 8.3 has not fixed the wifi drop out issue as it was purported to do?

Thank you "old chap" for responding. I shall hope it is a one-off and not a Bounce (which elcpu has said might be the case). Fingers crossed. Only time will tell.

    Yes it was!

I suspected the ones concerned (won't mention names), but noticed that both had posted other comments that were borderline - all credit to Apple most were removed

There was a comment about PS61 "And half of his posts got removed!" which I thought strange as his all seemed to be genuine

When I upgraded my iPhone 6 plus to ios 8.3, suddenly I cannot login to wifi on my Aunt's xfinity wireless router. It says "incorrect password". Had no trouble before the upgrade. This happens if I go to settings->WiFi, click on the network and enter the password. I tried resetting all network settings with no help.

However, if I have "Ask to Join Networks" enabled, and then try to visit a website in Safari, I get the pop-up asking me to join one of the available networks. If I enter the password there, it takes it and connects!

Something simple to try first, go to settings, select your aunts wi-fi then "forget network"

Restart phone & pair again, you'll be asked for password but it should then keep settings

I'm pretty sure I did this while trying to solve the problem with no luck, but I may not have restarted the phone afterwards. What did work, as I mentioned, was to enable "Ask to Join Networks" and entering the password when the join prompt popped up from Safari. So far this has allowed me to connect.

My post was more of another piece of information to the puzzle rather than a plea for help.

Thanks for the info. If I have difficulty again, I will make sure I try your suggestion.

FYI... I received a call from Apple Engineering earlier this afternoon. This is the second time they approach me regarding my posts here. The first set of calls were in January and I know that many posters here were also contacted. This time Xavier R. spent over an hour on the phone with me collecting data as before. Xavier had all the previous info I had provided and went into additional details on my issues with BT and AirDrop.  He may be contacting others as well and stated that he would follow up further after Engineering has had a chance to digest the data. It has been 7 months since the Wi-Fi issues were first reported and I hope that the next upgrade will bring additional fixes. I give Apple credit for trying but they need to solve this as soon as possible, 7 months is a long time for a fix.

I also took the liberty of emailing Xavier a copy of the post by don_wan on page 186 dated 4/12:

Many people with wi-fi issues on this forum have been approached by Apple, had logging installed etc. Before they launched an update with a supposed fix for wi- fi issues, wouldn't it have been a good idea to beta test that fix with the very people they have been in contact known to have these issues?

I had the same problem on the devices I updated through wifi, a restore as new, then restore of my iCloud back up fixed the issue.

No.  It had nothing to do with PS61.  Please read posts carefully.

Unfortunately I have no got a problem I NEVER had.

I just updated to iOS 8.3 and I no have my wi-Fi dropping intermittently.  Especially with WhatsApp and iMessage.... I have a connection, and then the app loses the network, and then I have messages that have failed to send.... It is only a wi-Fi issue, because if I switch off wi-fi and use the cellular connection, then the messages send fine and the Apps are able to maintain a network connection.

Seriously - this is so bad from Apple!!!!

Sure, fix an issue for others, but don't break the product I had that was working perfectly well before you meddled with you increasingly unstable mobile operating system.

This is beyond annoying to inherit a problem that you never had before.

    Apple - the new Microsoft!!!!
