Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

I'm in the same boat. I have an iPad Air and never had any wifi problems until I upgraded to iOS 8.3. My problem seems to be related to the device being off or going to sleep. Every time I reactivate it the wifi access is not working. It shows a full connection but when I attempt to do anything that involves internet access I just get a spinning cursor and nothing loads. This is happening consistently, 100% of the time. I can restore access by setting Wi-Fi to off and then on again on the device. then everything is fine again until the machine auto-locks again. I have already tried a reset and restore and that didn't make any difference.

"Finally. It sure beats bashing Apple."

Yeah - amongst other things I do Apple related and professionally, I support about 120 iOS 8.x.x devices (mostly iPhone 5c's, iPad 2-4th gen and an iPad Air) in a corporate setting including the one I own and those in the test pool.  These devices move between the office and people's homes to airports and coffee shops. I "gate" iOS updates for these users - directing them when to update their devices over wi-fi based on testing and have done so for each iteration since 8.x.  Typically I'll wait about a month after each release unless theres a serious security threat addressed.  While some may criticize the fact that I don't speed test, wi-fi speed tuning is not a corporate requirement since wi-fi networks at work block connectivity to network resources and they are throttled for high bandwidth use (like updates).  Since iOS 8.x I've seen 1 dead iPhone, App crashes due to bugs, ActiveSync related email connectivity issues and the occasional cracked screen.  Never a wi-fi (heck never an OS) problem reported from anyone.  Not to say people here aren't having legitimate issues but I know for a fact people here have overcome and moved on.  I save those posts and re-post them here periodically just to unnerve the paid shills and Apple bashers...

    Same over here:

    - one iPad Air 2

    - two iPad mini

    - one iPhone 5s

all "running" iOS 8.3 connected to an AirPort TimeCapsule (A1470, 2TB, FW: 7.7.3).

Gave it a try and had the iPad Air 2 restored via iTunes, since recent updates all were made OTA. Tried the aforementioned hints and workarounds (like turning off location based system services, disabling airplay, disabling bluetooth etc.) as well. To no success.

I'm still experiencing intermittent WiFi-Drops at my home network. This is extremely annoying, since it'll eat up the cellular data amount rather quickly (before allowance is reset, that is).

After upgrading to 8.3 on my 5s, unable to enable WiFi and Bluetooth also unable to be enabled. I have tried every single recommendation from users and Apple including a full restore as well as rolling back to 8.2 and the issue remains unresolved. This is a huge problem since I no longer have access to hands free while driving and this device is used for work.

Hi ccjoyner, your issues seem hardware related to me. The Broadcom chip handles both Wi-Fi and BT. Have you considered having your phone checked at an Apple Store?

Everyone wants to blame the hardware but it is not hardware related. My phone was 100% flawless and as soon as 8.3 hit the phone everything stopped. Hardware seems to be a canned response by many but thanks any way. I am not playing Apple to fix an issue they caused, hopefully all the posts about the issues with 8.3 push out a faster resolution.

If you check back, the problems many people were having - probably with IOS8 - were wi-fi dropping connection. With mine, no matter which hub I was paired to on any device the wi-fi would disconnect

Sounds like you have a total failure of wi-fi and Bluetooth which sound different

I'm not saying it isn't a software related  issue but like elcpu said it is the same chip that handles both wi-fi and Bluetooth soit would be worth getting it checked

If you leave for the next release of software and it still doesn't fix it you'll be no better off

I agree, if you search the good old interwebs there are many complaints of the WiFi option being grayed out. I understand the dropping connections is totally unrelated and been a plague to many for a long while now. The same thing happened on a 4s directly after an upgrade last year. Having been in technology for 15 plus years I have seen many software releases cause or ex[pose hardware issues. 8.3 touched both WiFi and Bluetooth.

Since 8.2 I have the wifi disconnection bug and the wifi/bluetooth not working together and it drives me crazy.

I was waiting patiently for 8.3 but the problem is still there.

Please M. Apple, can't you do better than that ? You could also speak off the problem instead of remaining dumb, that is what some of us call respect.

I'm getting lots of reloads on my iPad 2 in Safari in iOS 8.3, doesn't seem to happen often on my iPhone 5s. Also, system reboots occasionally, which never happen in earlier iOS versions. There may have been some problems with 8.2 but didn't use is much as I was on a four month trip and used Verizon Cell on my iPhone 5s.   Running WiFi on latest Time Capsule and testing on an earlier Time Capsule. My Mid 2014 2.5 GHz MacBook Pro is running download speeds of 65-66 Mbps in both wifi and hardwired, 55 on 2012 Time Capsule. The iPad 2 runs at 25 to 45Mbps downloads in speed tests. Safari seems to reload a lot on more on complex long news pages which have a lot of mixed ads, videos, and images. Runs fine on large HD videos. Doesn't happen often on Chrome.  I'm not sure these drops are with WiFi or some else in iOS Safari.

It seems like the Apple iOS staff are playing wack-a-mole, fix WiFi on one version/hardware, but create more problems on others.

Try using Google fiber IPV6 DNS... Ipv6 tunnels down and up... Or flow through on your wifi... If you dont have ipv6.. Dont worry.. It will use ipv4 close to use and then jump in ipv6 for request and  retrieval of data then tunnel down to IPV4 as it comes back to you...  This may not fix all your issues but may help the  Page load faster as I have seen and other users have seen.... Try it...

type this in your DNS wifi... Google fiber ipv6... Works on all my Apple products...

OR you can type in the expanded google fiber ipv6 DNS LOL... Both work the same.. The compressed ipv6...   2607:f8b0:4004:802::1011  Means the same thing...

    uncompressed Google fiber ipv6...

Fortunately I haven't experience any problems like these. In fact most of the problems I read here are pretty bizaar.  What remedial steps have you taken?
