Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

I just want to add my findings on here. For the last 3/4 months I've been troubleshooting the issue I have made the following observations:

    • Wifi Issues occur when any device on my network including OSX devices are uploading for an extended period of time.
    • This can be when I plug my phone/ipad into charge and the iCloud backup kicks in.
    • It happens when Aperture/Photos app syncs new photos to iCloud/Flickr
    • Any video upload including manually uploading to youTube or when I take a video and iCloud begins backing it up
    • Seems to be ok for about 2 mins then issue gets exponentially worse until the entire network 'dies'.

I've has some success with this app http://www.intrarts.com/throttled.html which allows you to throttle the upload on your OSX device. I can now upload videos and icloud stuff without the network breaking. Unfortunately the problems remain on iOS devices. What I do if I notice the netwrok beginning to go is toggle the wifi connection on the device (breaks the upload stream) and goes back to normal for a time. Hope that these findings help to point to a solution.

Well I had a chance to run a few tests and it appears the WIFI slowness is back after upgrading to IOS 8.3 but only when I'm streaming to my bluetooth speaker.  If I don't stream audio via bluetooth then my WIFI speeds are fine.  The video below was recorded with IOS 8.2 but I'm getting the same results with IOS 8.3.

I am working directly with Apple again and I hope I can assist them in any way.

I watched your video.. Yep looks like Bluetooth is the issue. Maybe speaker is bad?? I had same results when I had my Apple TV using wifi.. 2.5 and 5 ghz had same issue. Once I used internet cable to remove Apple tv's from wifi... All issues stopped. I use a big blue live Bluetooth speaker on my iPad mini and iPhone 6 plus.. However it doesn't effect wifi like yours does. I still get 50 Mbps DL after getting 100+ Mbps burst.. Then falls to 50-60 Mbps.. UPLoad is 5 Mbps.. Yet still has 20+ Mbps burst... Most of the time... Then falls to 6-7 Mbps. Did you use the google fiber IPv6 DNS I posted??

type this in your wifi DNS in your iPad.

    2607:f8b0:4004:802::1011

may not not fix all issues. However should help performance. IPv6 tunnels up and down. So don't worry if you don't have IPv6 service.. It will tunnel up to IPv6 for data request and then tunnel down to IPv4 as it comes back. It will use IPv6 to get as close as possible. Then tunnel down to IPv4. Your wifi has all these setting and flow through if you have IPv6. Let me know if it helps. Or helped if you already use it.

Have you heard of a app called cloudcheck? It's a iPhone only app.. Type the name in your iPad in app store. When it says no results. Touch name area where you type name... Like you want to delete and look for another title. Then hit search again without deleting cloudcheck. It will show list at top to select iPad or iPhone only apps. Select iPhone only and it will show up.. It has speed test... But most important. It has a wifi sweet spot section that lets you see where you have dead spots in your wifi.. Turn it on and walk around and you can see where dead spots are located. Here are my results on my iPhone 6 Plus. I will post results with Bluetooth connected and streaming music. Then I'll run a speed test and post results. I want to match the test you performed as close as possible. It could be a defective bluetooth speaker.

image.jpgHere are the results with my big blue live Bluetooth

speaker streaming music while I run speed test on cloudcheck and Ookla speed test.. It must be your Bluetooth speaker...

    image.jpg

You can see the burst in the graph... Then falls to what I'm left with. 67 Mbps of the 50 I pay for... I live in Ohio yet I send speed test to Chicago. All comcast servers work the best from what I have found. This is closest Comcast to me...

With everything working great until you turn on the Bluetooth speaker. Have you tried a new one.. Go buy a new model speaker and bring it home. You can always take it back if it don't work. Get a different brand or model and see what happens. Let me know if you think the ipv6 DNS helped.

There are 3 shown under cloudcheck:-

    Cloudcheck from ASSIA

    WiFi SweetSpots from ASSIA

    Cloud Check from Investigacion

Which is the one you used?

First and second are same. First has speed test and sweetspot finder. 2nd has sweet spot finder only. ...  3rd one i never tried yet. Use the first one.

It's not the bluetooth speaker.  It was working fine before IOS 8.x AND I just tried 2 other bluetooth devices (Bose cellphone headset and Bluetooth to 1/8 stereo converter) with the same exact results.

Weeks and months ago I tried changing DNS with no change.

This happens within 5 feet of my AP/Router so no dead spots.

I'm still pointing the finger at IOS 8.x as all of this started happening around September of last year.  Like I said I'm in contact with Apple again and we're getting log files for my WIFI and Bluetooth.  Heck when I upload the logs I'll even offer to ship them my iPad and AP/Router if they want to see it for themselves(I don't think it's the AP/Router as this happens in hotels also).

I'm happy that Apple has reached out to me again and I'm doing whatever I can to get information back to them.

Now you can use the sweet spot section in no audible tone or you can hit audible button and you will be able to hear a sound as the speed increases and decreases as you walk around the house to see where dead spots are. The faster your Wi-Fi the faster the sound will be as you lose signal the sound will get slower so you know you have a dead spot or you are losing signal. Could be anything from the distance you are from your transmitter to anything that is in the walls between you and Could be anything from the distance you are from your transmitter to anything that is in the walls between you and  transmitter and device...

I Understand. However the new iOS could have problems with the way the bluetooth works.  Said it was all fine until iOS 8...?? However as you notice it works great when you don't use the Bluetooth speaker but messes up when you turn on the Bluetooth speaker so I would suggest trying a different unit and see if you have the same results. You can go buy one at the store just to test it for a day or two and then take it back to get your money back LOL

Dead spots can apear and die at any time.  We are subject to solar interference and when we have powerful electromagnetic storms that knockout radio communications. I do notice sometimes performance issues on those strong solar days.  It's worth checking out using CloudCheck app. Science is experimentation and observation that's why I tried to run the same test you performed.  I however have a different Bluetooth unit and use a Netgear R6300.. With 1300mbps  speeds available if I could buy that speed from Internet provider.  Current Wi-Fi unit exceeds abilities that I can pay for from provider...

Yes I've tried a total of 3 different devices all of them make WIFI slow when streaming audio.  That's better as with IOS 8-IOS 8.1.3 just having bluetooth on would cause dramatic WIFI slowdowns.

A few weeks/months ago Apple had me install a WIFI logger on my iPad and I've given them my results.  This time they're having me not only install the WIFI logger but also a bluetooth one.

I Seen you said three.. However how old are they? You can't update the software in them. So you are stuck with its old software. However if your units are new.. Last year or two. it should work. However we both know from your video it doesn't work with Bluetooth on.. Can the bluetooth be  hooked in with a 3.5 jack cord?  Have you tried removing the Bluetooth and see what happens when the speaker plays using a cord? Go buy a cord and try. If it works. send the bill to Apple... Lol just kidding we both know they won't pay for it. But at least you can stop the issue.. I had to run cable and drill holes to remove Apple TV from wifi.. Take the cord back if it don't work.
