Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

All 3 of my bluetooth devices are less than 2 years old.

The Bose speaker does have an 1/8 stereo jack.  When the Bose speaker is set to receive it's input from that and not bluetooth the iPad disconnects from that device over bluetooth and audio plays over the 1/8 stereo jack with no problem.  THAT'S how I have to listen to music from an external speaker is using a cable.

I remember seeing your posts a while back and willing to try anything I shut off any Apple device in the house(iPhone, Apple TV, another iPad, Son's iPod)with no changes.  I'm willing to dance naked on my front porch holding my iPad above my head if I think that would help, no not really but I thought about it.

NO changes unless your Bluetooth is off.. it just keeps falling on the Bluetooth unit itself. I would try buying a new unit at the store. You can take it back and get your cabbage back LOL.. Well the speaker is sitting next to it. Unless you need the speaker 10 feet away then I'd just stick with the cable. One less radio transmission/ radiation!!..... your body needs to absorb LOL... I try to remove as many connections to wifi/Bluetooth as I can. If it can use a cable. I use one... Less interference from devices.

One other thing I did notice was you had a keyboard hooked up. Is that also connected by Bluetooth?  So when you are streaming music you have the speaker connected and you have a keyboard connected to Bluetooth?  It could be a combination of both of those units. Have you tried removing the keyboard and streaming the music to the speaker and see if it works okay? The keyboard is old? Maybe it's messing the speaker up...

Cloudcheck work ok? Find any dead spots? Did you find the app useful?

Very useful! In the same room as router speed remain stable at about 45mb, but moving around it went up & down like a roller coaster. Fortunately none of the really bad areas are causing a problem and it might be due to interference (in the kitchen a lot of electrical appliances)

Something I remembered from work (telecoms) a client was complaining about really bad wireless, but only in evenings. We did loads of tests & found they had low voltage lights in all their rooms. It seemed that the transformers hidden in the ceilings were causing the problem, and of course they only had lights on when it got dark

I noticed something strange about the tests, it showed download at 7.08mb yet Speedtest showed 35.78mb (and the sweetspot graph was showing about 45mb)

From my own tests I can tell you that speedtest is junk. Use Speedof.me, it is the only one I have found that is fairly accurate.

I had no trouble with the wifi connection until I upgraded to 8.3  Now I have wifi dropout on my ipad 2 and also on my husbands ipad 2.  Have tried the reset network settings, to no avail.  The wifi drops out whenever it feels like it.  Might come on after a few minutes or it might take a few hours.  Extremely annoying and inconvenient.

Backup your iPad, erase and reinstall IOS, restore your stuff from the backup.

thanks for the reply, I have seen that 'option', I shouldn't have to go through the aggravation of a restore, but thanks for the suggestion, I appreciate the response.

Good luck, but I doubt that it will fix itself.

I suppose it's more advanced thinking than a reset or taking to Apple store?

Well,  always had wi-fi drop outs since upgrading from ios7 and no upgrades have sorted my 4s yet , but a first this morning! After restarting as usual to temp fix the wi-fi, on restart I had the greyed out enable wi-fi button as others have reported. Never had this before so can only conclude  the "fix" in 8.3 has made my phone worse. Well done Apple.
