Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

Clearly apple has told nothing to their techs, I just got off chat and they still said hardware issue. Although I rolled back to ios 7.1.2 and have had no issues all day

Hello Justin. I see that you are contacting us in regards to the iPad disconnecting from wifi. Is that correct.

    Me:yes

PeterI am sorry to hear that but I will do my best to help you out with this today.

PeterIs it ok if I ask you a few questions regarding this device?

Me:it shows is connected but when opening pages in safari it just will randomly say loading or web page failed to load

    Me:yes

PeterOk so it shows connected but when opening pages it will show loading or just failed to open the page? How long has this been going on?

    Me:after ios 8 upgrade

PeterOk so this happened after upgrading?

    Me:no

Me:and rolling it back it works great again, i changed no other settings

Me:my ipad 3rd gen and other ipad mini work great on ios the last ios 7

Me:thats why i rolled this ipad back

Me:but when i reintalled ios 8 the issue came right back

PeterOh ok got it. And do you use this iPad for business or personal use?

    Me:personal

PeterOk and have you done any kind of troubleshooting with this device yet?

    Me:yes

    Me:rest wifi settings

    Me:did a full reset

    Me:without restore

    Me:set up as new ipad

Me:each ended with the connection not working right

    Me:youtube vids wont play

    Me:cant stream netflix

Me:well you can but it is choppy as ****

    Me:excuse my lang

    PeterIt’s ok.

PeterOk so then the next thing we would do is to create a backup and restore the device to factory settings using iTunes.

PeterAnd set up as a new device to test it out.

    Me:yep did that last night

    Me:didnt work

    Me:reinstalled ios 8 from itunes

Me:by turning ipad off and then holding down home while connecting it to itunes

PeterOk so you DID put into recovery mode and restore using iTunes?

    Me:yes

PeterOk so the last thing we would need to check is the internet at the home. Is there any other devices in the house hold that are having that same issue?

    Me:nope

    Me:note 3 works great

Me:ipad 3rd gen running ios 7 works great

Me:ipad mini first gen running ios 7 also runs great

PeterOk so with this device if it is still not working properly it is a hardware issue and we would need to get a replacement.

    Me:its not a hardware issue

Me:i restored the ipad back to ios 7.1.2 and it works great

Me:have had no issues all day

PeterHow did you restore it back?

    Me:using itune

PeterWhat version of iTunes are you running?

    Me:most recently updated

Me:im not currenly on that machine

PeterIf iTunes is updated to the latest version 11.4 and the device is able to update to iOS 8 than when you plug it in to restore it is going to download iOS 8 and install it. It would not revert back to a previous operating system.

Me:it showed a pervious back up i had done with itunes

Me:that was done while I had ios 7.1.2

PeterBut that will only bring the content not the operating system.

Me:looking at it now, shows ios 7.1.2

    Me:ipad works great

PeterIf it is on 7.1.2 there is no way it could have updated and reverted. I am not too sure how that happened. But if the device is working fine as of now, I would leave it on that system until we release another update to fix any bugs and glitches with iOS 8

Peterand do the update via iTunes and not wifi.

Me:okay, any estimate on the time for the patch?

Another workaround, try turning off your "handoff". It seems to be working for me at least until now.

I have this exact same problem. It seems that my iPad Air is waiting for something, the wheel spins endlessly, nothing connects and then suddenly everything is fine. It is ok until the ipad is woken up from sleep again then the same thing happens all over again. It also sometimes appears when using it continuously. I'm really disappointed. I got an iPad because I was told they just work, but I'm having real problems with this. The new features a great but right now I'm wishing I could downgrade to ios 7.1.2 until this is fixed.

I am having the WiFi problem on my iPad Air, and it is WiFi only...not cellular.  The only thing that seems to help for me is when it gets hung up I switch from either 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz and that temporarily solves the problem.  I have tried all other suggested fixes.  Either they did not work, or they only provided a temporary fix.  I have mostly been in 2.4Ghz since yesterday morning and that is holding okay for now.  This is an IOS8 problem...not a hardware problem.  So, if you call Apple and the tech support tries to tell you it is a hardware problem, then he/she is either feeding you a line of you know what, or he/she is completely incompetent.

I downgraded my iPad Mini to ios 7 on sunday and everything was back to normal.  Then last night I got the same exact wifi problems!

So downgrading ended up NOT helping me.

I am amazed that you did a restore to a backup that had ios 7.1.2 and it reverted your device back to that ios.  I have not tried that, because as I always understood it, it would remain as ios 8 even if the backup was 7.1.2.  You have me thinking about trying it because my current backup in iTunes is on 7.1.2.

Okay...that's pretty weird.  I hope Apple comes up with a fix for this...and soon!

Iphone 4s.    Just got the greyed-out Wi-Fi button with   'Location accuracy is improved when Wi-Fi is turned on' underneath it. .  Not even an information button.

Can't roll back to 7 because I can't turn off Find My Phone either.

I really hope Apple are on the case.  Nightmare.

I bet they do jack all. They are so arrogant they don't acknowledge a problem. None of the rumoured fixes due in ios 8.0.1 make any mention of fixing wifi issues. Absolutely mortified by apple, they seem to get a kick out of causing carnage. Why couldnt they of released 7.1.3 this fall alongside the new phones. They just had to mess with it all. Haven't they heard of the phrase if it ain't broke, don't fix it

Yep. I'm currently running iOS 7.1.2 and the wifi connection is now getting stuck.  Maybe the initial upgrade to iOS 8 affected the wifi chip on my iPad.  So downgrading back to 7 was useless.  I'm doing all the recommended fixes, but they're only temporary fixes.

Apple are beginning to annoy me & this latest software update has made me go into print for the first time.

VIsited an Apple store to discuss problems I am experiencing.

    • Embedded video links do not play
    • Certain web sites will not open

After the usual "no we have not heard of this problem" I asked them to check their iPad was using ios8 and to visit certain sites. What a surprise the videos would not play and the sites would not open. Oh said he it must be their sites. I then pulled out a device running on ios7 to prove all was well before the update. Result, one red faced advisor with no response other than "they should fix the problem soon"

OOh man, if your wifi button is greyd out, the chip is smegged!!

now now I have noticed since upgrading to ios8 the iPhone is running a lot hotter when playing games, which could have an impact on the wifi chip!

try proving it though. As from the transcript above with apple support they're software must be flawless and any problems must be hardware!

I'm a little hesitant in rolling back.  Almost never have a good experience on any products (Apple or PC)

Yes, my guess was differing chip sets, or maybe just different revisions of the same one.

Another thing occurred to me too. I bet most of the beta testes are actually apps developers, and didn't run on hardware, but in a software device emulator, which is what most devs use for testing their apps.

Apple really needs to insist that beta testers use actual hardware...

I am not certain about the mac randomization. That doesn't apply once connected. its only during scanning for new access points (or at least its supposed to be). Actually, you just gave me an idea. maybe I need to go to may access point and see that it consistently reports the same mac address..
