Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

So (sorry for my English, I'm Italian)
what worked for me was a router change. (ipad air 2 wifi/cell)
I had an old Huawey and there was simply nothing to do.
It was running smooth just in front of the router but then dropping dramatically in a 3 meters radius. If I eventually inserted a wall in the 3 meters radius (you know rooms have walls) there was simply no way to get a connection. All dropped to 0.0056 mbs and then disconnection and all the stuff you know. (in the meanwhile the glorious Ipad 1 was running like silk)
This morning I tried the air 2 (brand new) on other routers and had sometimes the same crappy result and sometimes amazing speeds at decent distances.
the only common returning fact was that the awful results were all on (old?) routers handling only 802.11b/g.

With 802.11b/g/n I'm having perfect speed tests and everything looks perfect; Of course I need to spend some time on it but for all the week end i never had a connection in my bedroom while now is running at warp speed.
I still think there's a lot of work for apple to fix this stuff and I also think they really should learn to respect their customers because the denial of the problem drove me crazy.

Hope this could help out someone out there, good luck!

    Summarizing this entire thing...

The issue appears to be with 5ghz band. Seems to be related to this MAC address randomization that Apple added for security. This IS an issue and MUST be addressed by APPLE.

    Solutions in the meantime.

    1. Go to a slower connection and change your router to a 2.4ghz and realize non of the benefits of the technology of today.

    2. Change your DNS to a Google, OpenDNS or other service.

    3. Got to settings and shut off location services all together

    4. Go to settings, privacy, location services, system settings, shut off WiFi Networking

What I did that seemed to work the best.

Changed router DNS to OpenDNS on router.

Go to Setting - Shut off Wi-Fi networking, frequent locations, share my location, popular near me, diagnostic and usage, location based iAds, Location based Alerts

Then I went in and reset network settings on phone (When you do this your phone will restart.)

This method has helped for the time being.

This issue is equivalent to buying a new car and it sometimes starts when you turn the ignition, and sometimes it doesn't. I'll go to the store park it, and I'll go outside, it doesn't start. I'll turn the key a couple more times, still doesn't start. Then eventually, it does start. After a few minutes. It's essentially a useless car. That's my iPad. It's useless. It doesn't do what I want it to do when I want it to do it. I want a new functional iPad or my money back.

Then ask Apple, we can't give you a new iPad.

Good way of putting it. The discoveryd articles are getting plentiful - they just had to go and 'fix' something that wasn't broken.

You can't downgrade iOS, unfortunately, according to support. I'm connected to the supervisor at the moment because the caller taking my support-call offered it, since I was so sure of what the problem was. The recipient of my call wasn't aware of this issue that has spanned 191 pages here and 1 million views, and kindly informed me I'm out of warranty on my iPad. Still on hold on the phone.

Oh, and he let me know that the Internet isn't reliable, because you know, on the Internet, people will make a mountain out of a molehill.

Actually, it was constructive.  Whining on the forum accomplishes nothing.

I'm on the phone with Apple. Where are you? Aside from on a forum saying being on a forum isn't constructive, I mean.

(Been waiting 15 minutes for the supervisor right now.)

Ignore them. A change of iPad probably won't do you any good but no harm in trying. Unfortunately Apple will deny all knowledge to any glitches but sadly iOS 8 is a bug riddled mess. We can only hope a miracle incremental update fixes things . But please vent away - those of us frustrated by the issues are happy to read what you have to say.

I must have downloaded a different IOS then, I got the version without bugs.

Wifi, thumbnails no longer showing on ripped TV shows, TV shows not sorting correctly unless director field is populated (***), usage and list of stuff using it not reconciling, iTunes sync unreliable via USB/wifi, iOS and iTunes reporting different free space left, search function on iOS glitches on emails (not from within app), iPad usage iCloud no longer backs up automatically if you are unlucky enough to be hit with storage 1 gig bug instead of displaying 5 gigs as it should ( actually I think iOS 8.3 started that one), iTunes sync no longer shows date stamp in iOS ...... I could go on and on and on. None of this was an issue on iOS 7. so there you have many reasons I am not happy. Many of these bugs were submitted during beta but iOS 8 just got released anyway and despite repeated feedback it does no good as they donot get addressed. The discoveryd issue id gathering some momentum so who knows.

None of that occurs on any IOS8 device I have owned or used.

try googling each one - you will find a raft of hits. just giving an example of a very small snapshot of glitches I have found. Wifi is the most inexcusable of them all. Many are struggling, mine isn't too bad but it has issues. On our home network two iPad minis seem stable but the iPhone 5s and third gen iPad do strange stuff. AirPlay seems to have a mind of its own as to whether it wants to announce its presence in the control centre. i have nothing but sympathy for everyone that posts on here, rather than say well mine works or iOS 8 is perfect with no bugs. It most certainly is not. I'm glad it all works for you . At the end of the day that's what we all want and hope iOS achieves
