Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

I'm posting to let the forum know what I'm doing to try solve the issue and whether it solves the issue. Why you post here, on the other hand, is a mystery to me. You must be one of those forum-posters support refer to as wanting to be part of a crowd.

The discoveryd articles are getting plentiful.

Yes indeed. Jay Lee who writes the Computer Help Line for the Houston Chronicle wrote about it today. The title is Apple operating system upgrade has WiFi working at snail's pace.

As I have mentioned Apple contacted me by email and phone after iOS 8.3 and collected substantial data for their engineering / development team. This issue is real and Apple is working on it.

Apple contacted me twice.  Once when my iPad was running pre-IOS8.3 and another time running IOS8.3.  I don't think the problem is just IOS and I don't think the problem is just the model of iP*(iPad/iPod/iPhone).  I think it's some kind of bad combination of the hardware AND IOS.  If that's true then Apple needs to have variations of future IOS releases OR they have to replace hardware in a minority of IP* devices.  It's more realistic for them to hopefully fix these problems via software than hardware.  If Apple doesn't fix our devices via software then word could get even more about this and it could cause all kinds of PR and/or legal issues for Apple.  Right now I can't stream audio to my bluetooth speaker and before that I couldn't even have bluetooth turned on without getting dial-up wifi speeds.  It's gotten better for me but in my case it's 100% clear IOS8 and all of those versions are slightly changing the symptoms of my iPad.  If it was hardware I would have had these issues in IOS7 with no change in all of the IOS8 versions but my problems are similar but change slightly.

For people to deny that IOS8.x is flawless because their device doesn't exhibit any problems is unable to look at the entire picture and they lack true troubleshooting skills.  I hope with the information I provided Apple after they contacted me helps them resolve our issues and others' issues that don't' know about this forum but are experiencing problems.

So you believe that individuals with problems do not have the intelligence to contact Apple?  Interesting.

We can argue semantics all night long. It's not worth my time, though, so you do with you time what you feel it's worth.

    OK

    but

If it was hardware I would have had these issues in IOS7

Which contradicts what you just said above.

    Thanks for the enlightenment.

No it doesn't contradict.  If it was hardware my problem would have existed exactly the same in IOS 7.x, IOS 8.0, and IOS 8.2 and up.  If it was software everyone would be having the same problems.  I still think it's a combination of hardware in some devices and IOS8.x.

In IOS 7 I didn't experience any WIFI slowdowns.

In IOS8 my WIFI when bluetooth was turned on, not even connected to anything was at dial up speeds.  If I shut off bluetooth I'd get great WIFI speeds.

In IOS8.2 and up my WIFI has dial up speeds ONLY when I'm streaming to bluetooth speakers.  At least I can have my bluetooth turned on.  If I don't stream audio to a bluetooth speaker WIFI is great.  Once I stream WIFI turns into dialup speeds.

Apple has contacted me twice because of what I've been posting on this forum.  From the tech that contacted me he said top engineers have been assigned to my ticket.  I think Apple has worked out some of the bugs in IOS 8.3 but I feel some still exist especially with some symptoms I see personally and others have been posting here.

I was not replying to you.

    Oops. wrong post

My take is that it is a combination of environmental causes, which may include IOS itself but not hardware, far too many have fixed their problems with router changes or firmware upgrades to ignore.

But one thing to remember is that I also have an iPhone 6 Plus and an iPad mini using the same router in my house that do not exhibit any WIFI problems as my iPad does.  Also when connected to a bluetooth device and/or streaming to a bluetooth device an IP*'s WIFI should not slow down from 20+Meg to .4Meg.  If it was was my router I'd get dial up speeds all the time, not depending on what IOS I have either connected to bluetooth or streaming to bluetooth AND it would happen on my other IOS devices.

Still not happening to me or my devices, (IP4, IP5, IP6, iPad Mini) so what should I say? Maybe I just haven't taken one of them to the place that causes it yet?

What is different in your case

I don't know.  My phone and iPad is IOS 8.3 and the girlfriend's iPad I think is 8.2.3.  Her iPad(8.2.3) and my iPhone's(8.3)  WIFI have never slowed to dial-up speeds unless the problem was with our actual internet connection.  It's just my iPad(starting with IOS 8.x) at home(if I reset the network it works for a little while or at least did a few minor IOS versions ago) and at Marriott hotels.  That's really the only places I use it.  I used it more when I had my Windows Phone but now that I have an iPhone I don't' use it as much so my "workaround" is to connect my Bose SoundLink Mine to my iPad via an 1/8 inch stereo cable and when I want wireless I use my phone.

The storage display glitch was first reported today

Not so. PeterK44 reported the bug on April 14. iCloud storage 1.0 GB

Jazcan and Demo among others reported it on April 18. iCloud Total Storage incorrect

I also saw it on my iPad (only) iPhones and all my Macs are unaffected, but it's a display glitch, I still have the same amount of storage regardless of the display. A reboot of the iPad cured it.

I am glad a reboot cured it for you. For others like Demo (Apple Level 10) a reboot did nothing. This is not just a display glitch. Some are reporting that their affected devices are not backing-up to iCloud.

Probably because backup relies on the currently inaccurate estimate that some are seeing.

Are you saying that the amount of storage is actually being reduced?

No, the amount of actual storage on iCloud remains as it should be and is reported properly on the devices that are not affected. However on the impacted devices, if the amount displayed is less than what is needed for an iCloud back up, the back up is not happening according to others (different forum). In my own case my iPad Air displays the correct amount and backs up properly. My iPhone 5 displays the incorrect amount but also backs up properly since the incorrect amount is still sufficient for a back up. So for me it is just a display glitch at this time but not so for others.

    Apparently so for some users.

I wouldn't waste iCloud space when iTunes backup is available, so that won't affect me whatever happens.
