Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

So it is quite possible that these fixes will be permanent.

    Possibly, or not

That is the trouble with a workaround - it is a way of working around a problem. Now if any of these workarounds do provide a permanent solution then I would hope Apple could incorporate into the next software release so that all users can benefit from the solution users have found independent of Apple's developers

    Or expert users

    Hi Philly

Interesting that Stanky and crew now come back to criticize the posters that took a little action for themselves and fixed their issues. Stanky et al are very negative.

They didn't come to the forum to seek solutions.  They came here to whine.

If saying "Possibly, or not" is agreeing with you

Until Apple provide permanent solution there is no way to know for certain. Same as your friends favourite remark about the world being flat. Possibly

    "Possibly"

Meaning that it may or may not be correct, either outcome is possible. I fail to see how that differs from what I said. In English they mean the same thing.

What I see from you is an extremely negative attitude, constant posts aimed at dissuading other posters from attempting to solve their issues. I can't understand why you don't want them to solve their problem, that's not very nice of you.

Reminds me of a film "Look who's talking"

Why should users need to replace their kit? Why do they need to go through pages on here in the hope of finding something that may work? The issue was caused by software, so Apple need to provide a properly tested solution

And your comment "that's not very nice of you" - I suppose insulting people & calling someone a nonce is nice?

Same for me. Installed iOS 8 lost 2.4 wifi. Other devices connect ok including 2 iPhones ( not upgraded to ios8). Virgin UK supplied new router with 5 ghz now ok. But as most places I visit do not have this iPad is now useless as a mobile device. I have tried all suggestions still not connecting. Surely Apple know there is a problem. If this was a Windows problem Microsoft would have a patch which sorted the problem. Does Apple not care?

Agree with wobbly_bob on this. My solution (one of those 15) to this was having to buy a new router which was compatible with iOS 8.2+ This was not an ideal solution and I had to spend money to fix an issue that should not be there in the first instance. The router I had previously was not old (was the standard router you get with SKY BROADBAND).

I know of two other people in my street who have the same router/ISP and were experiencing the same problems with their 'apple' network'. Have advised them to get the same router I had to buy (ASUS DSL-N55U). None of which bought so far. One of said neighbors phoned their ISP and they told him that they don't recommend using another router on their network instead of the standard issue one. I can understand why they said this. It's rubbish that people who are not savvy enough to install their own router have to suffer this ongoing Apple issue.

Anyway I hope me mentioning the name of the router I found to work will help people out there.

It is indeed unfortunate that Sky Broadband does not supply up-to-date routers.

Indeed. That's Apple just crippled 20% of the UK broadband market http://media.ofcom.org.uk/facts/

According to OFCOM that's about 400,000 homes. (20% of 22 million)

I just don't understand why a company with 20% of the market doesn't supply up-to-date routers.

Pls remember: my iOS-devices lose the WiFi-signal sent by the current model (5th gen) of the Apple Airport TimeCapsule. What's more to say?
