Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

I had the same problem on the devices I updated through wifi, a restore as new, then restore of my iCloud back up fixed the issue.

Ignore the negativity of them, you don't need it.

Thanks for clarifying, we can now see that rather than make any helpful suggestions yourself you simply copy what other people have said (and many of them are "zeros")

Interesting...  Rather than investigate to determine if any of the solutions will resolve your situation, you'd rather whine about the suggestions.

It's clear that baldy et al wish to stop others from fixing their issue, overflowing with negativity and insult they are one of the largest obstacles to seeking or offering help in this thread.

Going back to the topic, saw a suggestion about wi-fi in general (different forum, but one that is actually moderated)

Is the router near a TV? If it is try moving it. Might not make any difference but something simple that won't cost anything

Unlikely to have an effect, TV is in the low mhz region (40 to 200) WiFi is in the low ghz (2.4 to 5), maybe a defective TV could re-radiate at a harmonic that interferes with WiFi transmissions but I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for it. A portable phone (2.5 to 5.5ghz) is far more likely to transgress than a TV

Check out the other threads.  Plenty of people having issues dropping wi fi connections after upgrading to iOS 8.4.

Unfortunaly issues have returned both using public and my own wi-fi. As others have reported, 8.4 does not appear to have addressed the problems that have been around since 8.0

The list of " fixes" from Csound1 was actually posted by mmurray47 in April. My question is whether any of the quoted problems/ solutions have been properly researched, in particular one on the list that refers to turning on airplane mode on?

The fixes were posted by the individual original users of them, their individual fixes were collated (more than once) by mmurray47 and quoted by me (also more than once). Do you require assistance in any way?

That information is now (and has been for some while) in the public domain.

Once again your post does not address the problem.

Before it got deleted you posted a comment someone made that turning airplane mode on cured the wi-fi issue

Seems a bit confusing, surely switching to airplane mode disconnects all network connections (phone, 4G, bluetooth and wi-fi). Or is it switching on then off works?

Yup, I don't go along with fantasy, and TV's interfering with bands that are out of their spectrum is almost a fantasy. As I said, it is most unlikely but if you want to believe it knock yourself out.

Radio is my business, I don't play games.

Totally agree, the post that was included in the list copied from an earlier post referred to switching airplane mode on which is nonsensical, however if it actually meant switching off then that's not really a fix to a problem either, would be more like user error. As I also mentioned, another post in the list of solutions to the wi-fi issue stated that this had been solved by getting a new phone. Yes this solved the issue for that individual, but I don't hold with a fix which involves purchasing new devices, be it iPhones, iPads, routers or access points, to resolve a problem which did not exist ( for myself and others who have posted) prior to the upgrade (sic) from 7.

Thanks for confirming, I wondered if he meant turning on then off again. But that would be the same as "rebooting" the device so not really a solution

When you ignore all the noise on this forum, there does appear to be only two solutions that appear to work with the problems that affect my iPhone 4s and the devices of others, when you have exhausted all the resetting, restoring to factory settings etc., these are either change your device, or change your router/AP.

Whilst some consider this an acceptable solution, I don't. Something changed from ios7 to 8 that caused the problem, and some of us will put up with frequent device resets to restore connectivity until Apple come up with a proper fix.

And both of those involve expense to the user - with no guarantee of success

If I bought a new router and it didn't solve the problem imagine asking for a refund "well it works fine on my laptop, friends Android phone, but not my iPhone ...
