Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

Count me as another ios8 user with constantly dropping wifi.

In our house we have an iPad Air, iPad mini and 2 iPhone 6's all on ios8 and all keep dropping wifi. This happens randomly and intermittently on all devices. Turning the wifi switch on and off temporarily gives us a connection again but then it's lost within a few minutes.

The internet connection is fine as I checked my routers settings and it has been connected over 42 days plus my iMac is fine too. Definitely seems to be the upgrade to ios8 that's done this as it only started after we updated.

This is really poor. Why do Apple have such issues with wifi? I don't think they can any longer use the term "it just works" as it seems to be less and less true these days.

I will be looking at reverting back to ios7 if I can find the setup file but I hope they resolve this quickly.

Same problem here. No connection with my Netgear router.
Couple of weeks ago I had the same issue when I updated to OSX Yosemite Beta.

Constantly i was issueing wifi problems. After going back to OSX Mavericks again the connection was stable again.

Since I updated my iPhone 5S to iOS 8 I am experiencing the same problems again.

Could it be that this problem is related?

My problem sounds very akin to yours.  Do we think that this is merely a little bug that Apple are aware of and will fix in a patch?  I've never really had a problem with a software update before so not sure how responsive Apple are to this kind of issue.

    Cheers...

I have the same problem with my iPad Mini 2. Wlan just stops working after a few minutes (~30min). If I turn it off and on again it starts working again. My router (Apple Time Capsule) shouldn't be the problem since my Macbook is working perfectly fine. It really ***** that I can't use my iPad anymore for surfing.

Hello, my iPad connects but it takes up all of my broadband so that I can't use my computers at home. I have to turn the iPad off in order to stop it.

Is there some fix so that the iPad is not constantly accessing the internet?

I found this to work (at least for now).  At first, I switched my iPad Air from my 5GHz neteork to my 2.4 GHz network, and it was better.  Still slow, but better.   Then I switched back to my 5GHz network  and changed the channel from 154 to 149 on the router, and so far the iPad Air is doing much better.  I'm not saying this solves Apple's ridiculous problem, but it looks to be a short term rix until Apple gets this issue resolved.   How this passed beta is beyond me.

My iPad became completely useless after the update of IOS. Does nor play any Youtube video anymore. How can it be that such basic problems are not detected during testing. Or does not Apple test in real world conditions? As an enthusiast Apple fan from the very first Mac on I am sooooooooooooo disappointed.....

My iPhone 5c and iPad 2 both have the same issue. Very unstable wifi, very irritating.

After update Youtube videos did not work at all on iPad via WiFi.

I disabled WiFi, shut down iPad, resarted iPad and reconnected WiFi.

At least this problem seems to be solved now.

I agree with disabling WiFi Networking, but would also change the DNS.

However, I would never recommend a Google service like 8.8.8.8.  Use Open DNS ( www.opendns.com ) which will not spy on you and is also very fast.

Their DNS address are 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 - just put a comma between them and put both in DNS under your current Wifi service on your phone.

I made both changes yesterday and, while there are some interruptions, have had pretty continuous service.  I don't think that this is a solution, just a patch.  So keep the pressure on Apple to bring us the update.

OK, I have now reset my iPad2 to v 7.1.2

It was easy, see this link http://www.idownloadblog.com/2014/09/20/how-to-downgrade-ios-8-to-ios-7-1-2/

All the issues I had are now resolved.

However, despite backing my iPad up in iTunes (I foolishly assumed it would be an exact mirror) I lost all my Safari desktop icons (I prefer them there to bookmarks) and have had to reload various personalised things such as keyboard shortcuts, I have a Navionics app for sailing, all the saved features were gone.

Setting back to v7.1.2 in fact seems to give you a factory default computer but it didn't take long to reload Mail, Safari Bookmarks, iBooks, Notes and Adress book etc

In my case it was well worth doing.
