Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

I Don't think things would of been much different if steve jobs was still here. The guy was a genius but had very much the mantra of Apple software being perfect. I think they would still be thrusting untested ios updates on us. It's a tough one, I love apple but I also detest them all at the same time. The phones have great potential but they keep messing and diddling with the code (just as they do with the constant itunes updates). They break stuff all the time just to plug a new feature which a lot of the time is not important. At Least not me. Health apps being the latest non interesting feature.

Tried this - had to reset network settings but it seems to work - so far, so good; only tried it for a short time though.  My other workarounds have been OK for several days.

Now three workarounds that seem to work (for me on my iPad Air) - independently - either:

    Link via 2.4GHz or

Link via 5GHz fixed channel 46 or

... turn off WiFi networking as above.

In fact, using Ookla, the last one seems to give more stable and faster download and upload speeds

Whoops, spoke too soon... Turning off WiFi networking only worked for about 30mins

I have same problem with 5 IOS8 devices (iphone5s, iphone5, ipad air, mini retina, ipad 3)

All in one network and within an hour someone is dropped off.

    I tried almost everything:

restart, hard reset, network reset, restore, played with router (Airport settings).

What seems to be working is 2.4 channel (no matter automatic or not) so try to close the 5.

Another additional thing is to turn off the Settings/General/Handoff & suggested apps.

It has to be done in all devices in the network otherwise it didn't work for me.

At least it is working in my 5 ios devices.

FIx from Apple is needed anyway!

Sorry, just had dropoff again - not working!

I have the same exact issue. Happens with my iPhone 5 and iPad Air... every time I hook these up to power outlet, my entire home network comes to a stop (iDevices + PC + Mac lose internet connectivity in spite of full router signal strength).

Yep.  This is the exact problem I had.  Searching for solutions is how I found this thread.

If my iPhone is plugged in, connected to wifi, and the screen off, the entire home network slows to a complete halt.  The router light for the wifi network the phone is on goes crazy.  Pull the power out or wake up the phone and the network comes back to life instantly.

I tried the solutions in this thread just in case they were related.  No success.  My workaround was to disable iCloud Backup.  Fixed the problem instantly.  Not happy with it, but I can live with manual backups till a fix is hopefully released.

One point to note, I don't think it is iCloud sucking up bandwidth. iCloud backup wasn't actually running at the time on my phone, at least not that I could see. Secondly I looked at my routers stats and during the slow down essentially no data was being passed to and from the internet.  It was like the iphone was screwing up the internal network to the point that it would freeze up, but it wasn't actually doing anything.

I don't think this problem is the same one that people are mainly talking about here though.

Network reset only works for a little while, then the "no service" comes back on and no internet even with WIFI

I had the same problem with wifi. I use a softphone app on my iDevices and NEED constant network connection so you can understand that this was making phone calls horrible if they were connecting at all.

I tried everything suggested but nothing worked until I tried what was in this video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XYeYLUn9nj0

Give it a try, it has been working for me for two days now.

This suggestion was made early on in this thread.  I have used it with one modification.

8.8.8.8 is Google's DNS server and I try to avoid everything Google.  All their apps and services are designed to spy on the users.

Instead, use Open DNS, www.opendns.com .  Their DNS servers are 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 .  You can put them both in with a comma between them.  It has worked fine for me and I know that Google is not somewhere in the middle.

For you guys using iphone 5/5s/6/6+, try these:

Whenever connected to wifi, turn off your "mobile/cellular data" (setting->mobile/cellular) and also turn off your bluetooth.

It has worked for me for 3 days on iphone 5/5s/6/6+.

Simply turn it on again whenever you leave wifi area to make sure you have 3G/LTE data connection again.

    Hope this help!

Still having the same problems on my iPhone6 and iPad Air.

Here is a question I have not seen addressed. Why do I get dramatically different results using Ookla vs Fcc Speed test. Which one is more reliable?

    Thanks

Sometimes my ipad air works fine and then all of a sudden it just will not load anything in any app.  Seems to drop wifi.
