Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

My iPad 2 drops the connectivity of our WiFi. I have restored the iPad and still no luck. We need an iOS8 update that fixes the problem ASAP.

Well, I may have found a solution that worked for me.  I should add a caveat that I unfortunately installed iOS 8.0.1 this morning and it killed my Touch ID and cellular network.  So I had a useless phone all day long at work.  I got home and after a hour of frustration, I was able to get 8.0 back on my phone and everything is working again.  So I don't know if it's coincidence that my WiFi is working great again after I wiped my phone and reinstalled iOS 8.0 (I have an iPhone 6+).

But before this I was having the same WiFi issues as everyone else.  I've been following this forum for a couple days now and have tried some of the suggestions, and they have appeared to work for me (at least over the last hour, and before hand I would get good speeds for 5 minutes and then they would die).  Here is what I did:

1). Switch my security in my Netgear router from WEP to WPA2

2). Use the OPEN DNS numbers in my WiFi settings on my iPhone 6+ (I used 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220)

3). Switch the 11N channel on my router to 149/5.745GHZ

I've been running OOKLA speedtest for the last hour and have been consistently getting 25mbs and before I was getting closer to 5.  I know some of these solutions have worked for some people, so hopefully you might find a nugget in there that makes your home network finally work the way it used to on iOS 7.

All this stuff about reconfiguring routers and whatnot, are all good resolving issues at home, but this upgrade has made the iphone completely useless on the road, where you're reliant on hotel or airport wifi networks.  It's not working and it's blowing up my ability to communicate globally.

WIth the OOkLA test I get : Ping 10, Download 19,21 Mbps, Upload 19,57 Mbps. I donot remember the previous values. But here, with my Ipad2 ans IOS8, the speedloss is not so dramatic.

Tried also disabling WLAN Networking in Location Services, but 5GHz still drops on my iPad Air. Strange thing is:

    • my iPhone 5 works without problems on 5GHz WLAN
    • my iPad Air keeps dropping the WLAN connection every 5 minutes
    • the only solution, which works for my iPad Air is to switch to 2.4 GHz WLAN

Please fix this quickly in 8.0.2!

This is turning into a bad joke for Apple.Tim Cook needs to stop giving away company holidays and get his staff to get his products working.

First all the issues with ios 8 and now pulling ios 8.0.1 because of more bugs is unbelievable for a company that loves to tout "it just works". The fact that their work-around is to degrade back to ios 8 says everything considering they do not usually allow downgrading. Talk about hypocrisy!

I am really losing my patience with them after so many missteps. My iPad Air is mostly unusable on the Internet now as the wifi connection drops literally every few minutes. My iPhone 6 is the same but ever so slightly more stable it seems. Not what I paid a fortune for with these devices.

The worst part is there's not even been an apology...

My iPad Air used to operate faultlessly, always connected quickly without any hassle, apps worked fine and communications were always responsive but since updating to iOS 8 that's all changed...wifi is almost useless now, mainly at first use after being on charge? Although it drops signal intermittently.

I tried to connect earlier and got nothing for several minutes on iPad but on my iPhone 4s running iOS 7 I had a faultless connection, so all this change this setting and that setting on your router etc is rubbish imho - Apple have screwed up and now they need to fess up and help us!

I was upgrading my phone to the iPhone 6 plus but now I'm looking at going back to android after this fiasco...terrible service apple.

Useless apple. Fiddled with code for no good reason and broken so much. Of course they will claim 'aware of no issues' despite this huge thread among the many others. I have sent feedback and linked this thread but I doubt they even bother reading. Surely their own staff must be seeing issues. They might just fix it circa 8.5.5 after dozens of incremental updates just before fall 2015 and then knowing them go and immediately break it again when they inflict iOS 9.

Same problems here, and also wifi at time not responding at all. Performance dropped from 50 Mbps down to 5-10 and sometimes even less.  Want to join the hue and cry. Apple should try and sort this quickly as it causes serious problems for its users.

{Iphone 5} I had 60Mbps down 15up on WiFi then instantly dropped to 3Mbps down 7Mbps up after IOS8 update. Did apple quit testing anything before release, this is not BETA or FUNNY  anymore.

Does any of you guys have iPad with 3G/LTE?

if so, did you try setting the mobile provider to manual instead of automatic?

On my old iPad 2 it helped to get download speed in wifi back to normal and solved some other problems as well.

Possibly it helps on iPhone  as well.
