Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

I am using iPad Air at my home with BT hub 5 (fibre-optical). After updated ios 8.0.0, I can not use stream app, like youtube, netflix. Because the connection of wifi just failed. When I open these apps, the wifi just disconnected. But I can still play clash of clan on my pad.

I reset everything, the ipad, router. but still have the problem using wifi at home.

So I took my ipad to my campus and connected it with the public wifi in my university. everything is back to normal. the wifi connection works well with every stream app.

So seems like, the new ios 8 can not work with BT hub 5 router.

I saw a lot of complains about wifi problem. Guys, which kind of router are you using? BT hub 5?

of course, I don't believe ios 8.0.2. I will wait for a new version.

I have had the same issue as everyone, pulled my hair out trying to figure out how to fix it.  Tried everything suggested and nothing worked until I did what is in this video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XYeYLUn9nj0

I use a softphone app for for my business and it is of course vital to work and requires a good consistent connection, so I was desperate to get this working.

Try it out and let me know, if it works make sure to spread it around so others can discover it as well.

    Thanks

KonnectDAvid you need to stop spamming the thread with your own promo links. Nobody appreciates that.

Also an update on the solution link I gave on the previous page - my iPad has been connected all day now without dropping which is a miracle compared to the few minutes at a time i got prior...

I am having same problems as all of this thread.  Just downloaded ios 8.2 so that may cure it.  However and I think I have read all the replies nobody seems to have contacted Apple Support for their advice why not?  I had the ICloud will not stop trying to update on day 2 of IOS 8 release I emailed support with problem and got a call 30seconds later, 3 minutes of very helpful guys time and he gave me the solution (which I posted for others with same issue) and it worked perfectly.  So I will now try same with support and will report back what happens.  BTW agree with last comment that DAvidKonnect is spamming link and should be banned?

I contacted Apple technical support via phone and was told it was my wifi - disconnect everything, wait and reconnect - blah, blah, blah blah - same old same old response.  When I responded that my iMac and Mac Book were unaffected, he railed on me that they had nothing to do with my iPad 4 or iPhone 5.  I have always found Apple techs to be very pleasant and helpful but this young guy was rude and had an attitude.  When I got the same spiel I decided to end the call. I have gotten some function back on my iPad 4 with the iOS 8.02 in regards to Safari.  Still a few issues with some apps.  With regards to speed tests, my speeds have stayed consistent with no drop outs.  I also had an issue with my iPhone 5 showing close to 20,000 emails but there were no emails.  I tried clearing the inbox but nothing was there although it still showed 20,000 emails.  I closed out my email account and then re-opened it with all the same info and that fixed the problem - email working fine now.

Yeah there is no point phoning them

or going genius bar. They'll have you rebooting your routers, buying a new one, setting up phone as new, selling your house, and changing your wife. Anything but holding their hands up and admitting iOS 8 is the issue despite evidence to the contrary.

Lol, "changing your wife" - I haven't tried that one. Maybe that's where I'm going wrong!

Since this thread wasn't long enough I decided to add my post.  Brand new out of the box iPhone 6 Plus has difficulty finding ANY wifi networks.  I walk into work, and don't automatically connect to the known wifi.  I check wifi networks, and there are none.  Even though my iPhone 5s iOS 7.0.6 sees plenty, including the known network it automatically connects to.  A reboot fixes the problem, but obviously absurd.  I have also just given up, and about 10 minutes later, the phone is connected, and shows all neighborhood wifi access points.

Same issue AFTER update to iOS 8.0.2...

I THINK I HAVE A SOLUTION!!!   (not perfect, but a workaround).

I have a NetGear R7000 Nighthawk Home 802.11ac home router.

It used to broadcast the same SSID for both 2.4ghz and 5ghz networks.

I changed the settings to use different names for 2.4ghz and 5ghz (AC) networks.

If the iPad Mini Retina Display tries to connect to the 5ghz network... same issues (works for 5/10 minutes, then slow to the point of failure)

If the iPad Mini Retina connects to the 2.4ghz network - EVERYTHING WORKS!

My original iPad Mini (no Retina) works with either.

The issue: I think iOS8 has bugs dealing with "multi-stream" (e.g. 2) 5ghz data streams from a WiFi Router.  The iPad Mini only uses 1 stream (as do iPhones prior to 6), and those devices have no issue with 5ghz.

    Apple, PLEASE FIX THIS!!

Until it's fixed, my iPad Mini Retina just connects to the slower network and I'm functional.  Not as fast as it should be, but it will work.

Bad wifi on iOS8 (slow or stop download in safari and in other apps).

I have iPad Air, use only 5GHz wifi. On IOS7 and 5GHz was very quickly and stable.

On iOS8 to speed up I need to reboot iPad (turning off/on wifi doesn't help). It works quickly for a while. but then it slow again.

Update iOS 8.0.2 did't install yet.

All my wifi issues have been fixed so far. This is on an iPad Air, 2x iPhone 6's and an iPad Mini.

Here's what I did if you missed it:

    1. Go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.

    2. After it has rebooted go to Settings > Privacy > Location Services> System Services > Wi-Fi Networking - turn it off if it's on.

    3. Reboot your device and then go to Settings > Wi-Fi and re-enter your wifi security key.

Viola! As I said this has worked for me so far on 4 idevices and fingers crossed it'll work for you too!

Thanks for the suggestion, but it didn't work for me.  After performing the recommended steps I was happily surfing the net then found I was disconnected from wifi within 10 minutes.  I have been using 5ghz, and just switched to the 2.4ghz.  Let's see if I can stay connected to that one.  Amusingly I'm getting faster throughput on the 2.4ghz, which seems to support 5ghz issues.
