Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

Right, iOS 8.0.2 doesn't fix wifi.

They never said it did, so I suppose we can't complain about that.

I wish they would acknowledge that it is broken though.

And fix the double capitalization at the beginning of the line when typing!

Sorry it didn't work for you buddy. Hopefully Apple will have a proper solution for this sooner rather than later but so far they seem to have not acknowledged it. Not only that but not many news/Apple sites seemed to have reported the issue either. Though there's clearly a lot of affected users...

Having significant wifi issues on new iPhone 6. I had better speeds in Afghanistan with my 4S than I do home in Virginia!  I thought it was my network at first, but the wired desktops are fine. Only iOS 8 devices are affected. My new iPhone 6 is getting .52 Mbps download speed while the desktop is about 15 Mbps. My wireless TV is over 10 Mbps. LTE is great but I can't afford to use that for all my data. What's up Apple?

Philip, I would agree that 8.0.2 doesn't fix Wi-Fi.  Let me clarify for the other folks out here that 2.4GHz and 5Ghz are frequency bands. They have nothing to do with speed, unless:

    1. Interference on that band
    2. The distance your device is from the AP (Access Point).

In my experience, 5Ghz does not have the radius that 2.4GHz does, but is less prone to interference.

Now, when I've tested my 3rd, 4th and 5th (Air) generation iPads (Wi-Fi only), I noticed a speed drop-off as you go down the generations. I decided to bit the bullet on my iPad Air and upgrade to 8.0.2.  No difference, but I haven't had any issues regarding Wi-Fi with 8.0 either.

Using 2 IPad 2's.  One running iOS 7 and one on IOS 8.0.0.  I have reinstalled IOS 7 twice and then gone back to 8 on one of the IPads.  The update on ITunes worked better than the ICloud.  I have turned off the ICloud on the IPad using IOS 8 and followed the directions suggested for turning off Wifi sharing.  Both IPads seem to be working OK but the unit with 7 works faster and the battery lasts longer.  I do not like the changes to Safari and it seems to contribute to the increased battery usage on the iPad with IOS 8.  Apple should stop assuming we all want the same capability ie sharing, music and apps.  I don't need tips icon or padcast icon.  I would like to have the best operating software but be able to select everything else.

2.4ghz and 5ghz **do** have something to do with speed.

5 ghz protocols (802.11n and 802.11ac) support multiple streams.  And 802.11ac *only* works on 5ghz.

You are correct though, most older iPads / iPhones don't support multiple streams or 802.11ac.

But, iPad Mini Retina and iPad Air devices do support multiple streams, but only over 5ghz.

Jack, In my environment, I don't use an AC router, although I install them at many of my clients.  I use an Verizon (Actiontec) or Apple Airport Express which only support at best 802.11n and the Apple Express is dual-band, but not MIMO.  I do agree that your assumption of a "multiple stream (MIMO)" bug in iOS 8 code may be correct. In one way I would agree that the reason I don't have the problem with speed is that I'm not connecting to a MIMO or 802.11AC device, but on the other hand, people are having issues with older iPads/iPhones that don't support either. I will have to break down and either get a Netgear R series or Apple Airport Extreme and do some further testing.

iPad 2 3G. Cellular connection is lost within max. 5 hours after it is restored. Powering down and up is the only way to restore the connection. Wifi is too slow to use, so I have disabled it. Also, I'm pretty sure my WLAN at home was adversely effected by the iPad after the upgrade. Some kind of flooding I suspect. Absolutely everything on the iPad is noticeably slower than it was before the upgrade to 8. Overall, the device is borderline unusable. I'm so angry at myself for upgrading. If you haven't done it yet, good for you.

    Mogulmedia,

I am sorry you feel I was spamming.  I was simply replying to individual responses people have posted about with the fix that I used myself.  I am not promoting or selling anything, simply offering to help with the solution I have been using for almost a week now.

If people do not appreciate help, just like you have offered multiple times as I see you have done, then they do not have to follow the 3 steps I outlined.

    David,

I know everyone is trying different things and everyone is trying to help.  It's not a DNS issues as the video link you provided states.  If it were a DNS issue, then the problem would have been there before the upgrade to iOS 8 and would be affecting more than just your iPad device.  Others have posted ping tests to IP addresses and to response times (ICMP Echo Replies) are all over the map.  pings to IP addresses don't use DNS at all. I'm not sure how Apple embeds their Wi-Fi code into iOS, but there are a few possibilities:

    1. There is a memory leak in the code (most likely) that causes the function call to the Wi-Fi hardware component to fail over time.  This one seems to be the logical one since a lot of people are complaining that it works for a while and then craps out.

    2. As Jack Beanstalk has pointed out, there may be an issue with multiple streams (aka MIMO).

    3. The iPad devices are throwing packets (in IT, we call it "chatter"), causing your network bandwidth to become saturated (possibly broadcast packets).

If anyone out there with IT experience (for the purpose of deciphering the capture) should try running a utility called "Wireshark" which is a packet capturing app that will capture packets in and out of your iPad/iPhone. Wireshark is free.  It's one of my most valuable tools in troubleshooting LAN/WAN related issues at my customers.  It's supported on both Mac and PC environment.  Most if not all network cards are capable of "promiscuous" mode which in layman's terms, means that you can capture packets on any device on your network, not just to/from the device (PC/Mac) running Wireshark.

I'm going to run a few captures, but unfortunately I haven't experienced any issues regarding Wi-Fi thus far.

Also, mogulmedia may be on to something with the Wi-Fi networking scenario in regards to any of the possibilities as stated above.  So, I'm going to perform 2 captures. One with Wi-Fi networking on and one with it off and see if more packets are being transmitted with it on versus off.  I will post my findings when I'm done.

I feel for everyone in the Apple Community.  These issues tend to be more common in the Windows world since there are different 3rd party network card manufacturers and 3rd party software drivers.  Apple has to take 100% ownership for this one!

    IT Hero,

The only change I have done that has worked has been the one I did with DNS.  I don't know why it has been working since, but it has.  This was after I did a full restore on both my iPad and iPhone 5s and 6+.

I have wireshark and know how to read packet captures, just not where I can do it now.

Again, I am just offering what has worked for me.

    Thanks

After upgrading to IOS8 and IOS 8.02 my wifi is extremely slow.  Ping times before the upgrade were around 15ms.  Now they are around 430ms. Downloads before were 36meg. Now its 1 meg or slower.  It took forever to download 8.02 only to find Apple didn't fix the wifi issue.  This issue also affect my iphone 5s in the same way.

    UPDATE:

I switch to 5Ghz network and the wifi issue is much better.  However if I take the devices with me on the road, probably wont be any 5Ghz hot spot around.

My devices are a iphone 5s and an ipad 3
