Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

I am also having all the WiFi connectivity problems with both my iPhone 5s and iPad Air.  It is much worse with my Air.  Works fine for a little while and then drops down to little or no connection.  I did a fresh install of 8.0.0 on my iPhone but it also has WiFi connectivity issues but not as extreme.  Did Apple say if fresh install of 8.0.2 would fix this or just trying a fresh install overall since iOS7?

No it is not reported to correct this issue.  I have provide a video that shows what I did easily and has been working for me for almost a week.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XYeYLUn9nj0 You can give that a try if you would like.

My new iPhone 6 has these issues right out of the box. Wifi speeds are sluggish at best. Keeps dropping the connection from time to time until it shows no Wifi networks. Only solution is to reboot the device.

Tried all the workarounds mentioned here to no avail. Have to use LTE which works great with up to 70 Mbit/s, but is killing my data plan.

I will return the phone if Apple doesn't come up with a fix quickly.

This continues to be a joke. Come home from work, the 5s sluggishly picks up my wifi and registees a paltry 2-5 mbit download on speedtest.net app. Take my wife's original iPad and it's blazing at 30 mbits. check our laptops, her Samsung s3 mini and they all show 30-35. Everything is great apart from the useless iPhone! Only a reboot of the phone gets it firing on all cylinders again but it never lasts. ios 8 is a total fail. Yet I don't think apple will have it in their agenda to fix. Despite this thread, despite sending feedback and linking this thread. Trouble is despite a widespread issue none of the main tech sites are making much reference to wifi. I thought ios 6 was a bad release but iOS 8 is by far the worst scenario I have come across in tech/gadgets. Yes the phone and os can do great stuff but without an essential like wifi working properly it may as well be useless. quite clear their QA testing is woefully vague and inadequate. iOS 8 should never of seen the light of day. There are a great many other bugs in it but wifi is the worst

I've been having wifi drop since installed ios 8. We have 5 different ios devices in family and all of them droped out of wifi at least once in an hour.

I've been trying every suggested workaround in last 5 days - no luck until today.

Yesterday I upgraded all devices to 8.0.2 but problem persists in there as well

Thought to try once again theKonnectDavid workaround in all devices.

Steps I did what get everything working in all devices:

    1. Set network DNS: 8.8.8.8

    2. Location service / Wi-Fi Networking /OFF

As I have Airport Extreme as well and I have tried different things there without luck. Now I tried some more with success.

    1. Encryption WPA2

    2. Both Channels active 2.4 and 5 under same SSID (3 for 2.4GHZ and 48 for 5GHz)

And for last restart router and all devices.

Hope it will work for some others as well but apperantly there is software problem from Apple what needs attention and fixing.

    Thanks to KonnectDavid, cheers mate!

I don't know what to tell everyone.  Was I one of the lucky ones?  I didn't have the issue before iOS 8, didn't have any issues after iOS 8 and still don'thave any issues after 8.0.2 update.  My Wireshark results don't show anything conclusive.  There are some multicast packets in regards to flushing of the DNS resolver cache, but that's about it.  I need to go pickup a 802.11ac (MIMO) router and see if it has anything to do with the multiple streaming issue that Jack posted to this thread.  There are some other non-WiFi issues that concern me.  One is the on screen keyboard split screen isn't working properly so when I'm typing a review on the App Store, I can't see what I'm typing.  Have to use my BT keyboard instead.  At least that works.

This entire debacle is simply inexcusable.  How on earth can Apple put out a product that simply does not work????  Wifi is nothing new.  It has been around in various forms for a long time.  And all products on the market use it successfully right out of the box.  All except Apple products.

Seriously, I was going to buy an iPhone 6 next month.  But now I am considering a Windows phone.

    What a shame.

BTW, here is a screen shot of my speed test.  I have DNS still set to the router and WiFi networking still on

So here's my question.  What makes my iPad Air different from everyone else's?

What annoys me is the total silence about this matter from Apple themselves.

An apology at the very least would be nice if not some kind of reassurance that our devices will work again soon for the purpose that they were sold.

I mean I realise they can't correspond to everyone and they have many issues to resolve but when they have internal teams dedicated to PR etc then I'm sure just one person could spare just a five second post on here - ON THEIR OWN FORUM - to put our mind at rest and some reassurance to those of us that have spent a fortune on their products that they will work again soon!?

After using the stepsI outlined a few pages ago, I had a solid 5+ hours of wifi connection on my iPad Air, yet for some reason it keeps breaking up again now. It's very frustrating and the worst thing is I have no idea when it might work again.

Steve Jobs would be turning in his grave if he was reading this thread I'm sure... Apple you are slowly losing my faith...

Certainly, don't go Android.  Unless you want to become part of the Google spynet.  All Google apps and services have one primary purpose, to accumulate information on you for Google's profiles.  They can then sell that to advertisers.  But worse, they have the biggest database of information on the most people of anybody in the world.  Who knows what it will be used for?

Another reason not to change DNS to 8.8.8.8.  Use Open DNS, 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220

The world needs to be saved from the Google pandemic.

This is certainly sofware issue and if DNS 8.8.8.8 is working then I don't much care who collects the data, Google or Apple.

Otherwise I just own 5 ios devices which are pretty much useless without Wifi.
