Q: iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems

WI-Fi problems on iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iPhone 5S after upgrading to iOS 8.

Typical results from OOKLA Speedtest before upgrade: Ping 17 ms, Upload 21 Mbps, Download 4.4 Mbps

Typical results after upgrade: Ping 39 ms, Download 2.9 Mbps, Upload 0.47 Mbps

iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 get 15 Mbps download and 4.4 upload on the same network.

Resetting network settings on the iOS 8 devices did not improve the performance.

Changing band on the router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz did give me back the speed on all devices.

However the speed occasonally drops on the iOS 8 devices, and the signal strengt can go from full til lost connection without moving the devices.

Also sometimes the Wi-Fi SweetSpots app report 0 mbps when the signal strenght is indicated as full and then suddenly go up to around 58 Mbps again.

It is almost like the device is trying to use cellular network that I do not have on the iPads before it suddenly switches back to Wi-fi nettwork again.

I am thinking about going back to my iPad 2 with iOS 7.1.2 that is working perfectly until the Wi-Fi issues are resolved.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

Okay so i had done everything except disable bluetooth. As soon as i turned bluetooth off, my 5GHz wifi connectivity was back to normal (at least for a few little while, will continue to test).

Then re-enabling bluetooth breaks my 5Ghz connection (or at least slows the downstream portion to an unusable speed, upstream is almost normal). I don't even have anything connected via bluetooth to my ipad.

    I don't get it.

Okay verified what fixed it for me: Deleted the only bluetooth device that i had a defined connection for (a bluetooth speaker). Now my wifi is totally fine.

I swear that is all I had to do... I don't get it.

I know this is under the IPAD section but i'm having problems with WiFi on my New 6+ heres my info.

    My setup:

    • iPhone 6 plus
    • NetGear 802.11ac R7000 router

Things I tried, but made NO difference:

    • Turning off 2.4ghz or just 5ghz on the Router
    • Turning off "WiFi networking" in Location Privacy
    • Resetting network settings

I went back to using my old Belkin N900 and it is working fine...

Holy Mackerel, that is fast! Are you in the USA, and if so, which ISP are you using? I was happy with 33 Mbps until I saw your Speed Test. Now I am almost happy.

ios 8.0.2 did nothing about this issue.  still have intermittent wifi dropouts.  so sick of resetting network settings.

did anyone actually find a permanent solution?

NOW my phone won't even connect to my wifi at all.  It just says "unable to join the network".  Every other device in my home works.  3 macbooks, 1 imac, 2 ipads, 1 android, all work perfectly.  I have reset network settings.  I have tried the trick with changing the DNS.   I've rebooted this phone dozens of times.   This **** iphone 6 is really making me angry!!!

First did these tests on 8, there is no difference with 8.0.1 or 8.0.2.

It is quite difficult to determine if the problem is fixed without looking at ping times.

30ms would appear fairly normal, and throughput would appear fine. It's only when response times go into the hundreds and thousands of ms that it seems sluggish, and only when packets start to drop that it becomes rapidly unusable.

Any action you take that causes a reset of the wireless devices brings you back to 30ish ms, and it can take hours, up to a day before degradation starts to kick in.

If you want to look yourself, there is a free app called net analyzer that includes ping.

I Just updated and found that my wifi network speed has dropped 50% at least from 4meg to less than two. Surfing is so slow now. I disabled Bluetooth (see earlier threads) and made no difference.

Thanks for confirming that Philip.  I had the impression that things had got better after installing 8.0.2, but that was probably just the fact that the network connection got reset with the update.  After some hours the intermittent connection has returned.

The one thing that remains consistent, and I am sure is related, is that my devices are seen intermittently on iTunes on my Mac.  Among three iPads and one iPhone, I have yet to see a pattern as to which might show up on iTunes, but it is never all of them as had been the case with 7.1.2.  And, if they are not visible on iTunes, iTunes Sync from the device does not work.

I wish that Apple would, at least, confirm that they have a problem, even if it is only with a minority of users, and tell us that they are working on a solution.  The fact that this problem does not appear with all users, but does seem to appear with all brands of Wifi routers (inlcuding Apples) might suggest that some chipsets in the routers are incompatible with a change in iOS 8.
